A gunshot echoes, thrusting Darby Lambert into a near death experience. Inside the confines of an ambulance, she meets “the man in white light”. He takes away the guilt, but makes her question everything. “You will see them,” he whispers, as he catapults her back into the real world where she is plagued with dreams of demons, nurses, and rock stars. Why has He sent her back? Does she have the courage to rectify her sins? Given the chance, could you erase it all?
Monique is the mother of two beautiful children and lives in a small community outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She currently works full time as an insurance agent, but her favorite jobs are mother, wife, and author. On her eighth birthday, her mother bought her a journal and said "write whatever you want, just write." And so, a love affair with words was born. She wrote poetry and short stories in high school and college, until 1993 when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. After her mother's death in 1998, Monique fell into a deep depression and found herself unable to write. Nine years passed, and only on rare occasion did she attempt to write with no luck. Finally, in 2007, under the urging of friends, she sat down and pecked out her first novel. It was raw and unpolished, but the process had been unquestionably cathartic. The next three years were spent filling her hard drive with seven complete manuscripts. At the beginning of 2011, Monique decided it was time to edit the work and share it with the world. She hopes you enjoy the ramblings of a deeply southern girl raised in a state rich with heritage and love.
If Déjà vu is a feeling of having seen something before, then what is Jamais vu? Author Monique O’Connor James plays with the idea very effectively in this novel of life after a near-death experience. After rushing towards the light, Darby Lambert awakes hearing voices in the ambulance, struggles through a hospital stay and recovery, and tries to pick up her life. But she can’t remember the day of the accident, doesn’t know why it happened, and, most importantly, doesn’t know why she’s survived.
First person writing gives a pleasing sense of immediacy to this tale, creating the character of Darby very effectively. A good sense of timing moves the story quickly towards Darby picking up the threads of her new life while haunting dreams pull her down. It took a while for me to realize how long these dreams had been going on, and quite how scary they were. But soon the reader’s on a roller-coaster ride as Darby tries to save lives only to find friends refusing to listen and a cruel inevitability meeting her at each turn. Meanwhile monsters chase her.
Searching for someone who’ll just listen and believe her, Darby wanders from nurse to psychiatrist to friend, building new relationships then watching them fall apart from lack of trust. Perhaps it’s the story of her life. Perhaps it’s the story of her life before—if only she could remember, before what.
The writing is smooth, consistent, and very evocative. The plot is truly different. The mystery is involving. And the denouement will leave you wondering in a pleasing sort of way. I was almost disappointed to realize there’s a sequel—the story felt satisfyingly, if confusingly complete. But I’ll probably look out for Déjà vu one day since I enjoyed this novel so much.
Disclosure:I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review. I’m only sorry it took me so long to get around to reading it.
Ok so can I give it a 10 out of 5???? Omg I am so tired but I will write more to tomorrow it's 1am and I have just finished and WOW I mean WOW... Can I get me a Kasey!! Teehee
OK so Iam awake but had dreams of this book! LOL:) This was an amazing book, with so much depth and excitement in it. It had me at the first page and I NEVER wanted to stop reading. The characters were the best, Darby's story was nothing I have ever read before and I so enjoyed it. If you want love, adventure and just a fabulous and breath taking book pick this up. You will never see whats coming in the end and you will get LOST in the story. I don't want to give a lot away because its that good and I want all of you to get the same feeling I did, a "how do I write a review on such a good book!! lol" Thanks for such a great story AGAIN Monique you NEVER have failed me with every book I have read of yours!!;))
Ok...um...The heavens have opened up, and God has literally placed Monique O' Connor James on earth here for our reading pleasure! She's an Angel. Monique's writing captivated me with her amazing "The Keepers" and her caliber does NOT falter here! I honestly went through a box of tissues, and haven't slept to finish this tale of beautiful twists and turns. She has brought Darcy to life, and in a non vulgar, wholesome way. However, with this most writers would not be able to still draw you in, Monique does. I could not put Jamias Vu down. She takes your breathe away from the very first page, and takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions through Darcy til the end. Her characters are complex, and jump right head. I am looking for where I can nominate Jamais Vu for Book of the Year, because it IS!! Monique the only things that I ask you is that you NEVER stop writing.
The first sentence in JV is, "There is nothing easy about dying; not the act itself, and certainly not the coming back." Never before has a first sentence sucked me in so completely. I knew that Jamais Vu was Monique's favorite, passing up her other paranormal novel The Keepers, which I loved so much! JV is even better! I love Monique's writing style. She was already one of my favorite authors after I read her first book, and now even more so!
Jamais Vu is part paranormal, part thriller. In it, Darby questions what is real and what is reality. The things she sees are terribly frightening, and yet are described so perfectly that I actually had chills running along my spine. Monique has also crafted scenes that had me in tears, or extremely angry. (I really don't like her sister or Evan!) I also felt other things like how annoying it was for Darby when her sister would bother her, or the equally annoying sound of her therapists pen tapping against something. It's an emotional roller coaster that you will want to experience again and again.
Darby is 24 years old, has a stuck up, awful boyfriend, along with a bitchy sister, and parents that don't show her as much love and attention as she deserves. She drives a nice car and judges people based on how much money they have. But all of that changes when Darby accidentally shoots herself with her father's gun. Darby changes completely and becomes someone new.
Darby begins having these dreams of people she knows. Dreams about them being hurt and killed. Demons haunt her dreams, too. But one dream in particular, of a boy she has not yet crossed paths with, really stands out to her.
I loved all of the characters. Darby, is such a fun character. She's incredibly strong and yet so vulnerable at the same time. All she wants to do is help the people in her dreams escape their horrible fates. But I LOVE Kasey the most. He's the rocker that sings in a band, rides a motorcycle, and is still incredibly sweet. He's tortured, and has a drug problem. But despite my absolute hatred for drugs and what they do to people, I still fell incredibly hard for him. (Why isn't he real!?!?!) And not only are Darby and Kasey great by themselves, but their chemistry is simply amazing. The two of them just click.
Once again Monique creates a setting that is almost like a character itself! Joel's plantation house especially!
I love that the book has twists and turns that aren't fully revealed until close to the end. The mystery factor had me staying up until the early hours of the morning, frantically reading until I would pass out from exhaustion. And oh my gosh, the cover! I had a serious case of cover love way before I even knew what the story would be about!
The ending is spectacular. I would have never guessed it would end that way. I am so excited to read the sequel Deja Vu, which will be the next book out from Mo! I love this book and highly recommend to anyone that likes paranormal mixed with a little bit of mystery and romance.
In short, JV has everything you could possibly hope for in a book: great plot, lovely setting, wonderful characters, entertaining and believeable dialog, haunting descriptions, action, romance, and a beautiful cover. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
I encourage you to add her on facebook or to like her fan page!
Jamais Vu-a disorder of memory characterized by the illusion that the familiar is being encountered for the first time.
I give Monique O'Connor James' novel, Jamais Vu (even though I'm not sure how it's pronounced :D ) a 5-Star Rating!!
I read Monique's The Keepers a while back, and knew then that I would always enjoy all of her works. I wasn't wrong. The novel, Jamais Vu, did not disappoint and was even better than The Keepers. I must say, of all the books I've read - that would be a LOT - this is the only one I've ever read that I did not find a single typo. Not that I'm looking for them, but my OCD seems to somehow magnetically drawn them out.
She already was a great writer, but I feel her character and story-line developments, along with her writing style have progressed even more so. I truly feel she could become one of the 'big dogs,' so to speak.
About the novel; Jamais Vu begins on a tragic note, but quickly veers off in a different and riveting direction when Monique's female lead, Darby, has a near-death experience. But, she is quickly sent back from 'the light' after being told there was more for her to do before her time was up. Reluctantly, even though she has no choice, Darby reenters her body, her existence and the life she wasn't all that thrilled to get back to...
Plagued by nightmares that don't make any sense, Darby tries to figure out what it all means. She sees a therapist and finally opens up to him, as she's not allowed to discuss the 'incident' with her family; Mom, Dad and Sister would all rather live in a make-believe world where nothing bad ever happened. Finally talking about everything is helpful, but it still doesn't bring her closer to any answers, in fact, the nightmares get worse.
In them, she sees people who will die and is able to warn (won't say who or how many) certain - but not all - people hoping to save them from a horrible fate. Even with that ability, it's not always enough as fate has a mind of its own. Darby feels useless and hates when she has to sleep, knowing she'll have to face the demons, tortures and other horrid things when she does.
There's one specific man she continually dreams about who's always smiling on the outside, yet she knows his hidden secrets and that he has his own demons to fight. When she finally meets him, Kasey, at a local club where he's a singer in a band where she lives, the two are instantly draw to each other. Fight it as they may, whatever force wants them together is determined to win.
We all know the saying, "It's a small world," and that sentiment couldn't be truer for Darby when Kasey introduces her to his fellow-band-mates and others in their lives. She's relieved to be meeting others who understand her own personal hell, and hopefully help shed some light on what she's going through involving her nightmares.
Some people aren't always who or what they seem, nor are they all bad, but they're not all good, either. Now, it's up to Darby to figure out which is which, and what to do if she's going to help any of the people in her nightmares; those tagged for death. It's also up to her to decide if she wants to live life to the fullest, chance her heart, and maybe even find love for herself.
I could recite the whole tale, but what fun would that be? :D Suffice to say; you need to get yourself a copy of this amazing, wonderfully written novel and read it to see why it’s now one of my personal favorites. You won’t regret it! Now, I'm highly anticipating Déjà Vu, Monique's next installment in this fabulous tale!
Hea y'all Anne here and it's 1:52am on Christmas morning and yes I am writing a review about an amazing book I've just finished reading Jamais Vu by Monique O'Connor James has absolutely taken my breath away. I still have tears running down my cheeks from this book. Monique is the author of best seller The Keepers and like that book this one opens a whole new door into paranormal stories and your lured into a ride you'll never forget. The story takes place in Louisiana, Monique has such descriptive details that I can smell the lilac and jasmine flowers. I can see the plantation style home in which the characters frequent to practice their band Machine Gun Butterfly, Joel and his mother Mary Ellen are good ole southern folks with southern graces. Darby the main character confides in Mary Ellen when her life is seeming to spiral out of control as a result of a life changing accident. Even though Darby is a changed person now the things she had been involved in will come back to haunt, her the person she was will show her what happened, and the person she has become must make a decision that will not only affect her life but also the people who have helped change her for the better. Darby is a lost soul in the world and soon finds another lost soul to befriend, Kasey has had a hard life and has his coping mechanisms but he sees something in Darby and he must know her. Kasey and his band are a sorted bunch of guys but each in their own way is good and each has a past and a secret, Chris, Matt, Joel, and Kasey will see in life in Darby and the curse she fears will follow. Can Darby survive what is happening? Is she strong enough to help not only her friends but also herself? The characters draw you in and show you a dark side of light and a light side of dark because both must exist for the balance to be maintained. Choices are made and lines are drawn for sides to be taken but when sides can't be chosen then a tragedy will decide the coin toss and no one will win. However Monique has taken this heart wrenching moment and put a spin on it that had my heart skipping a beat. Can leading lady Darby make the decision to give up her memories for a chance to do what is best by the ones she loves? This story also brings to light that beauty is more than what is on the outside it's who you are, who you wanna be, and how much you allow yourself to love and be loved. This is so important for people to read and see and understand because the way you treat people can have a definitive effect on how they perceive themselves and the tragedies that can come from that are not always mend able. If your looking for a breath taking story line, lovely characters, and a journey into decisions, love, death, and life then grab a copy of Jamais Vu now and fall in love for the first time or second time. 5 out of 5 stars for Monique O'Connor James and while your grabbing Jamais Vu get The Keepers as well and fall for angel of your own. Brilliant can't wait for De Ja Vu...
Monique O’Connor James is not only the author of Jamais Vu (and The Keepers- you can check out my review for The Keepers by clicking HERE), but she is also my mentor and my friend. She is amazing in so many ways; her writing, her imagination, her guidance, her amity and companionship.
I’m very impressed with Monique’s writing techniques. She steers her readers into such an awesome fictional state and gives them a rollercoaster for a ride. So, now that I’ve gushed a little bit over her, let’s get on to the review.
Jamais Vu was released on October 4, 2011 as an Ebook. Print version will be available in the next couple of months. I had the opportunity to read Jamais Vu before it was published. While I really enjoyed reading The Keepers, I absolutely adored Jamais Vu and consider it to be my favorite of her work, thus far. I seriously stalked Mo the whole time I read it… but she loved it! And… it’s a series- wooooohoooooo! Give me more Vu!!!!!
Jamais Vu is loaded with a variety of genres/elements in a fictional read. You have paranormal, thrills, chills, romance, mystery, and suspense. I even found it to be a bit of realistic fiction.
Monique made it easy for you to develop a relationship with each of her prime characters. Darby, written in her point of view is the main character. She suffered from depression and is a lonely girl. After playing with a gun, she “accidentally” shoots herself and has a near death experience and was sent back with a mission. She has dreams of people she’s yet to meet, people she becomes connected to. She sees their deaths. Can she change their future?
Darby runs across the guy who has been haunting her dreams. She follows him. Kasey is the lead singer in a kick-ass band. Although he has a serious addiction problem, the boy is totally swoon-worthy. He introduces her to his band mates, one in particular Matt, who Darby is uneasy and creeped out over. But could he be the key in her mission? All will be revealed in this “Gasp, gasp, GASP, OH my gosh, GASP – Rollercoaster, up-down-jerk right-jerk left!” super awesome read.
I give Jamais Vu 5 stars! (P.S. I got a sneak peek at book 2- and if I thought I was on a roller coaster for Jamais Vu- book 2 was like riding The Tower of Terror!” *screeeeeeaaaaaams* Totally rad!
Several people have said that the first sentence will suck you in - and in my opinion - they are correct! That first sentence, "There is nothing easy about dying; not the act itself, and certainly not the coming back." makes you wonder right from the get go what on earth is about to happen.
I enjoyed the novel and liked the way Monique O'Conner James styled her writing. It was engaging, entertaining and thought provoking! This was the first novel I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more of her work.
One of my favorite parts of the book, was how it ended. It gave hope the the future and her next story!
One thing that is immediately evident in Jamais Vu, is that it is very well written; clearly, Monique O'Connor James is a very talented writer. The novel's construction is faultless. It is very well edited and crafted. Monique's writing style is so very lovely to read, in many ways it's effortless to read. This made reading Jamais Vu a pleasure.
Now this is where I get even more gushy, apologies in advance. Jamais Vu is so unlike anything else I have read which is a feat in itself, since I am fairly well read and have quite an eclectic taste in literature (it was also what I studied at university, so you can imagine the wide range of literature that I have read).' I'm finding it hard even to pin point the genre: romance, paranormal, spirtitual??? clearly, there's a combination going on. But regardless of my difficulties of correctly identifying the genre, Jamais Vu was a superb read.
The opening captured my attention immediately with the introduction of the protagonist Darby. I instantly liked her character and found her thoughts and perceptions fascinating. Her character was very easy to follow and bond with which is always a great accomplishment. What Monique very effectively creates with her character Darby, is one that the reader wants to root for; I certainly wanted her to get the answers she was so desperately seeking.
The range of relationships that Darby navigates her way through are very interesting; however, there are many things about her relationship with her sister and her father that are a little unclear and left unsaid. I will be reading book two very soon though, so hopefully these questions that I have will be answered and I will get a better understanding of a few of Darby's relationships. I think what it's very important to remember as a reader, is that this book is not a stand alone, which means that Monique does not have to have all of the boxes ticked and the every aspect of Darby's life explored in explicit detail in this book. I am eager to read book two, Deja Vu.
Jamais Vu is a fast paced book, with an unbelievable amount of action and twists and turns. On the flipside, it's also extremely thought provoking and deals with many 'issues'. What I really liked about Jamais Vu was the concept of second chances. Don't we all wish that we could have one every now and then? And this novel, covers this notion so very beautifully.
Bravo Monique O'Connor James! I was blown away by Jamais Vu.
Darby Lambert had the picture perfect life — a wealthy family, a nice car, a good education, a successful, good-looking boyfriend, a bright future. But one bullet threw her whole life, her whole existence, careening out of control.
Somewhere between death and life, Darby meets a man who sends her back to help people escape an untimely death. She sees these the deaths of these people in her dreams. One of these people is the talented musician, Kasey, who is in danger of overdosing on drugs.
The immediate connection between Darby and Kasey draws them into each other’s lives. Darby tries to convince Kasey to kick his drug habit, all the while running from demons of her own.
The author takes the reader on a journey with the main character starting with her “death” and traveling through her efforts to save people who have come to hold a prominent place in her life. Unfortunately, there are forces working against her that seem to be winning.
This is a tough one for me to review because it’s unlike anything I’ve read before. It is definitely a rare style of writing, and the author does it well. I love it’s unique flavor and imaginitive plot.
The writing is fantastic. The reader’s attention is captured from the very beginning, and the plot is built slowly for the first two-thirds of the book, continually adding more intricacies to the conflict. The author does a good job developing the main character throughout her traumatic recovery, eventually bringing her to a full self-awareness.
The last third of the story moves fast. So fast, that when the end comes, you might sit there for a few minutes to digest what just happened. It’s a thinker.
It might not be for everyone, because it is a bit of a wild ride through the main character’s stream of consciousness. From what I understand, the second book in the series brings it all together, so the questions you are left with at the end of Jamais Vu are answered in Deja Vu. If you’re not afraid to try something new and different in your reading repertoire, you are in for an amazing trip.
I dont even know where to begin with this review. I got to page 180 and was in tears, - gob smacked and totally unprepared.. Read on and I thought my heart was doing flips............. even grinned to myself and thought - yayaya !
Jamais Vu is a riviting story, that will not only grasp at your heart strings but have you teary eyed and also sobbing by the end. Characters that will draw you into the pages, and a storyline that will make your heart ache way past the last pages.
I read this book in almost one sitting, I was unable to put it down, I was hooked line and sinker within the first pages.
** There is nothing easy about dying, not the act itself and certainly no the coming back ** This opening alone gave me goosebumbs and certainly pushed me forward to read the rest.
Monique has delivered a storyline that will have you guessing right till the very end. Have you doubting what the outcome mabye and also what has happened. UNPREDICTABLE by an means and ending that will please the reader but have you eager to grab book 2.
Monique has put forth the emotions in this story like poetry - I felt every heartache, sob and tear, I also felt myself drawn into the pages . sniff = sob - sigh - Its an overwhelming read - if your like me and an emotional reader you will be wipes the tears away and reading at the same time.
The concept of the storyline was unique and enthralling and an ending I did not see coming . I read the last pages - sighed - closed my eyes and thought ... I need the next book !!
Without realizing it, Jamais Vu sucked me in right off the bat. I found myself totally glued to the book wondering what would happen with Darby.
Darby was such a complex character. She has a near death experience and comes back to the world unlike her normal self. She struggled with finding her place in the world after almost dying, and I totally sympathized with her. I imagine it's hard to come back from something like that and not be a different person.
Her family frustrated me, because they kept such a close eye on her and it really bothered her. From her perception, her family never wanted to talk about anything difficult, but they wanted to dictate who she spoke to and how she ran her life. Later on in the story, I did understand, but for most of the story I was annoyed with them like she was.
Darby starts having nightmares and realizes that the people in them are real people, one of them being Kasey. She starts following him around and eventually they strike up a romance/friendship. It was rocky and rough. Kasey has his own problems that he has to deal with; problems that aren't little.
The paranormal aspect in this book was pretty cool, if I say so myself. It was an interesting twist on coming back from death, and made the book unique. Some characters turned out to be something I never thought they would. I'd say more, but I hate giving away spoilers. You just need to read it for yourself!
Overall, this was a fabulous read and one I'd definitely recommend!
Ever since Darby was sent back from the brink of death, her dreams have never been the same. She is plagued by nightmares of people she knows and the choices they made that eventually lead to their death. Darby feels she was sent back to help these people right their wrongs so they can have a chance at life. Her family and shrink have a hard time believing her dreams as reality. What can Darby do for others if her own family doesn't believe in her?
This book is seriously addicting. I stayed up late reading , telling myself I would go to bed once I finished the next chapter. Only to find myself saying..."well maybe just one more chapter." Darby is such a strong person even though she won't allow her self to believe it. Who else could face such horrifying demons in her sleep and actually function the next day knowing what she knows. But I loved what the other characters brought to the story too. Some characters were only there for a short time but they felt real and you become emotionally attached to them.
An amazing, yet emotional story of one girl's journey back from the afterlife and finding out what really happened in her former life. Will it all be too much for Darby or can she change the lives of those she love and her own? Jamais Vu is definitely a must read that will leave you believing everyone deserves second chances.
Darby Lambert is a young girl with her whole life ahead of her, and everything changes when she shoots herself. She’s released to a world controlled by her dreams and her coming back has a purpose bigger than herself. That’s when she meets Kasey Kibodeaux, a good looking southern guy who is the lead singer of a local band. But she’s got a charge and she’s got to figure out why the demons plague her…. Kasey’s got a drug problem….but is she falling for him?? Matt is Kasey’s best friend and getting to know him opens up a whole new realm or does it? While Darby explores her new world with her new quest in life, she realizes there’s more to what has happened. There’s something she’s managed to hide from the one person she should always trust: Herself. The tale is pretty clever! This book is superb!! You will not be able to put it down. I love how the author sets a lot of the book on a plantation in South Louisiana. Monique James manages once again to bring her characters to life. That’s what kept me turning page after page….I had to know what was next. Nothing is as it seems, but Monique clears it all up and you won’t believe how it turns out. Plus, she leaves the door open for the 2nd book.
You are gripped from the first line "There is nothing easy about dying; not the act itself, and certainly not the coming back." Monique then throws you into a world of demons, afterlife, love, abuse, decisions, drugs, non-decisions, death and family. She thrusts you into the story and makes the characters come to life as if you are right there, part of the action. Your emotions are put through the ringer as you pull for Darby, Kelsey, Allison and Owen. By the end of the book your screaming NO, this can't be it! I want more! Even though Jamais Vu has closure, you-want-more. This is what makes Jamais Vu such a great book, any story that leaves you both satisfied and wanting more simultaneously has done what it was supposed to do; entertain you in an alternate reality, while making you feel as if it is real. Five stars isn't enough for Jamais Vu, you need an entire galaxy for it, well done Monique, I can't wait for Deja Vu, the sequel to Jamais Vu!
At the end of Jamais Vu you are also given a glimpse of Monique's first novel The Keepers, as soon as I finished the preview for The Keepers I went online and purchased it! You can look forward to that review coming soon!
This is a young adult paranormal romance set in the deep south of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The tale is told through the eyes of the main character, Darby Lambert. Her story is indelible, spiritual, and I found myself in tears before the ending.
I've long admired Monique O' Connor James' work ethic, and now I've found a gift in her elegant prose. Her style, and ability to communicate the sanctity of life is something I would love to see in more YA novels.
The sequel, Deja Vu, was released yesterday, January 12th. I suggest you add both to your to be read list, and past them on to a young friend. I believe in the message Monique has to offer.
Oooh I love this title and the artwork (blue!) but more than that this book sounds intriguing and I can't really put a genre to it (not that we like to put things in boxes lol)
Jamais Vu = never seen. Hmm....
OK so I kept going back and back and back to finally read all the book but just kept getting side tracked as it couldn't hold my attention. I just didn't "feel" or "get the vibe" of this book. Strange seeing all the 5 stars this book has been given but I guess the day had to come when a book that was raved about just didn't "do it" for me. I promise I will try again....er...someday. I feel such a failure!
Wow! Such a unique and intense story. Loved everything about it, the way it's written brings it all to life, you feel drawn to the characters. So much is going on, you'll be eager to finish the book to find out what happens next. I'm looking forward to the next book, I need to read more about Darby! :)
A powerful and compelling read that deals less with the urban fantasy aspects of angels and demons, and much more with the condition of one's soul. I did not see the ending coming, and author Monique O'Connor James gets extra credit for that because it doesn't happen often.
Jamais Vu was amazing. The author has a way of describing everything so that you feel you are right there. Smells, sounds, textures and sights all jump off of the page. The twists and turns in the story had me anxious to see what would happen next. The ending was perfect, although it surprised me. This is a fabulous book!
