Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

Super Short Synopsis: This one takes off very quickly (after all, there's only so much you can do with 103 pages). Jessica is at the skating rink with Lila when she meets Josh Angler, 16-year-old hunk extraordinaire. Keep in mind this is not SVH, so Jessica is still twelve years old. I have a few problems with Josh believing Jessica when she tells him that she's 14. First, can't he tell by the fact that she hasn't hit puberty that she's not a teenager yet? When you're 16, 12 is super young. And when you're 12, 16 is really old. At least, that's how I felt. Luckily for me, I hit puberty just before my twelfth birthday, but we all know that A. the Wakefields never have birthdays and B. Jessica doesn't hit puberty until after "Jessica's Secret." Second, Josh Angler needs to get a life apart from hanging out with little kids at the skating rink. Anyway, despite every clue to the contrary, Josh asks out 14-year-old (and a half) Jessica on a date for the coming Saturday (I can't tell you the month or year, because Sweet Valley doesn't operate in Universe Time). It's actually going to be a double date. Josh IS smart to not want to hang out with Jessica alone. From this point forward Jessica is going to have to lie to everyone, so she tells her parents she is sleeping at Lila's house. She tells Liz that her conversations with Josh are only on the phone, and she tells Steven nothing.

Well, wouldn't you know that Jess ends up having a horrible time on this first date. She is overdressed, can't get into any movie they want to see (at 12, she has no fake ID), and they end up at the Dairi Burger where Jess clearly knows everyone. She ignores Caroline Pearce's attempts to talk to her. Caroline's sister, Anita, recently broke up with Josh. Jessica quickly grows exhausted of pretending to go to SVH, a place that at this point in her life she knows nothing about. Nonetheless Josh kisses Jessica at the end of their first date (her REAL first kiss), and asks her out again for the next Saturday. He won't tell her where they are going, but promises that it will be a huge surprise.

Jess knows that she can't tell her parents she's at Lila's again, so she fabricates this whole business about going to Lake Tahoe with Kerry Glenn. She has Lila pretend to be Mrs. Glenn, and Alice Wakefield is none-the-wiser. Now Liz has discovered a bit more from Amy Sutton, so she confronts Jess again only to have Jessica tell her that Josh is the one who lied by telling her he was only 14. She also keeps maintaining that she is absolutely going to Kerry Glenn's cabin in Tahoe. Too bad, because she'll have to miss the circus her family is attending.

Except Josh hasn't told her where they are going yet... and it's the circus. Bonus? She gets to double date with her brother, Steven Wakefield, who is quite aware of her age. He doesn't rat her out, but Jessica knows her whole family will be at the circus, and she is having a miserable time of it anyway. She doesn't enjoy the whole first act. When she runs to the ladies room and bumps into Anita, she quickly realizes how much Anita still cares for Josh. She hastily suggests they get back together so Jessica can save her own ass. But Karma is a particular bitch to sociopaths, so Jess first bumps into Liz and then her entire family after the show. Clearly, she's not in Tahoe.

She comes clean to Josh on the ride home, and he forgives her because she's Jessica Wakefield. He STILL wants to be her friend.
She comes clean to her family, and Liz marvels at her ability to always get what she wants because she's Jessica Wakefield.
She gets grounded for only two weeks because... she's Jessica Wakefield.
AND she gets tons of attention at school for dating an older boy because, well, you know.

Fucking Jessica Wakefield.

Alternate Title
: Lying and Mayhem at the Circus

Tagline: Jessica has the biggest secret of her life! (... That she's a dumbass?)

On a Scale of 1-10, How Annoying is Elizabeth?
A 10. Jessica lies to her twice and tells her first that she is only talking with Josh over the phone and second that Josh lied to HER that he was fourteen instead of sixteen. Both times Liz realizes that she MUST be wrong, because her sister is Mary Magdalene. Then, at the end, she marvels over Jessica's ability to spin everything in her favor. Liz, you might be in deeper shit than your sister. Sociopathic powers are nothing to wish for.

On a Scale of 1-10, How Sociopathic is Jessica? I would say a 10, but I have to look at this on a scale from 1, Doormat Liz, to 10, Jungle Prom Jessica. Since she doesn't frame her sister for murder in this book, I will go with an 8. As mentioned above, she lies to her sister twice, in addition to her brother, her family and, of course, Josh. But she really earns that 8 when she marvels at the end how all of this is JOSH'S fault for ever speaking to her at the skating rink.

Is There a Dance? No, but there is the circus, which, in my opinion, is WAY more exciting.

Lingering Questions: On page 28, Josh kisses Jess on the lips. But this is BEFORE her super-special called Jessica's First Kiss. So, what? Because her first kiss wasn't with someone her own age it doesn't count? Isn't this exactly the kind of thing Jessica normally brags about backwards and forwards? It's the one part of her experience with Josh that wasn't totally miserable.

Cover: Good or Bad? Jessica's shirt is awful (purple and orange striped), but her flowing hair and healthy complexion make up for it. The boy, Josh Angler, is clearly an Abercrombie and Fitch model.

Fantabulous Quotes (With Commentary): "The two girls were at the Sweet Valley roller rink, a very popular spot for middle and high schoolers."
Word. All I did at 11 and 12 was hang out at the roller rink listening to Aqua and the Spice Girls. Despite the fact that I couldn't even skate all that well. It was totally the place to meet boys though.

"She had decided not to wait for the last minute to put on her makeup, and she couldn't really tell in this light how it looked."
Makeup? At 12? And how can she afford it?!

"'I've been dying to see that new horror movie Night Stalker."
Cute, ghosties. You mean the one about devil worshipper/serial killer Richard Ramirez?

"In all likelihood Jessica was telling the truth, and Josh had just mistaken her for someone else. Who could tell?"
Who could tell? Anybody but Elizabeth Wakefield.

"'What kind of guy would purposely lie about his age?'"
Good question, Jess. The kind of guy just like the 12-year-old who would lie about her age to impress a high school junior.

"She was wearing a pair of tight designer jeans and a cotton turtleneck sweater."
Two paragraphs before this Jessica is complaining that Lila is used to a higher standard of living - EVEN THOUGH JESSICA IS WEARING DESIGNER JEANS.

"She couldn't help thinking the whole thing was Josh's fault."
Whew! I thought Jessica might actually want to take responsibility for something. Luckily, the ghostwriters proved me wrong on that one.

"'Ladies and gentleman!' he boomed. 'Welcome to the tenth annual visit of our circus to Sweet Valley!'"
For a minute there I thought it was going to say "Tenth Annual Hunger Games" and that they were going to offer up Jessica Wakefield for the slaughter. I was very disappointed to find it wasn't so.

"Elizabeth couldn't believe it. Only Jessica could do something really rotten and manage to reproach herself so much that she ended up sounding virtuous! It was truly obnoxious."
I'd venture to guess that Elizabeth is more amazed at Jessica's ability than truly annoyed with it.

Moral of the Story: Jessica could convince a rock that she is the most special person on earth, clearly above everyone and above every law.

Final Rating: 2 stars. No half point for Jessica Sociopath Wakefield.

Oh, this one is so 80s.

It seems that Jessica has been getting into trouble with older guys in every Sweet Valley series. In this SVT, 12-year-old (!!!) Jess flirts with 16-year-old Josh at a roller skating rink and they end on a few dates.

There's a lot of elaborate lying, sneaking around, fake phone calls, a mistaken twin incident, and Steven even gets involved. It all ends with a circus (80s!) and Jessica getting in big trouble.

Kudos to there being consequences in this one. With this sort of plot, it's pretty important to show that this isn't something to emulate.

The Older Boy
Plot: Jessica and Lila are at the skating rink when Jessica meets a boy (that looks like Steve Saunders from BH 90210) name Josh Angler that’s a junior at SVH. Lila is ticked that she hasn’t met anyone. Then Jessica leaves her to go flirt with Josh some more. (I REALLY hate when the girlfriend you came with does that). Anyways Jessica tells Josh she’s a freshman and he’s puzzling over why he hasn’t seen her around before. But she’s cute and he’s a guy so that trumps all else. He asks her out and they agree to go to the movies Saturday. Jessica points Lila out and says she’ll be at her girlfriend’s house. Lila gets pissed and leaves. Josh thinks she looks young but lets it go. Later at the Wakefield house, they’re all bummed out over the circus coming to town and them not getting tickets. Jessica asks can she spend the night at Lila’s and Alice says yes if Mr, Fowler says it’s ok-but little does she know he'll be out of town-. So far everything is going to plan.

The date starts off rocky. Josh says he’s going to pick up his friend Sam and his girlfriend Melanie. Melanie is a freshman “like Jessica” and keeps asking her questions about SVH. Then Josh decides they should have dinner, but Sam and Melanie are broke so he suggests the Dairi Burger. When they get there Caroline Pearce (it would be her) are there with some other girls in their class. Caroline tries to get Jessica’s attention but Jessica pretends she doesn’t know them. Then Jessica sees a heart in the booth that says, Josh and Anita. At the movies, she finds out Anita was Josh’s ex-girlfriend from Melanie. Josh calls Jessica a “sweet kid” in the movie theatre which pisses her off. But then when he takes her back to Lila’s he invites her out again next weekend and tells her he has a surprise. Then he kisses her. Jessica tells Lila she thinks she’s in love!

Amy and Elizabeth are in a book store when Elizabeth is approached by Josh who thinks she’s Jessica and reminds her about Saturday. Elizabeth puts two and two together. AT home, she to get something out of Jessica and invites her to a movie trip Saturday with Amy. Jessica says Kerri Glenn invited her to her family’s cabin. During dinner, Josh calls, but her mother has a rule no calls during dinner. Jessica then asks if she can go to Kerri Glenn’s cabin, but Alice says she’ll feel better if she talked to Mrs. Glenn and could get some more information about the trip. Josh calls again and Elizabeth overhears them making plans. She accuses Jessica of meeting up with Josh, but she just says Josh is just a boy she likes to talk to on the phone, and she’s not crazy enough to date him. Elizabeth falls for this hook, line, and sinker and even irons her own dress that Jessica “tried on” to make it up to her out of guilt. Jessica then gets Lila to call Alice and say she’s Kerri’s mother. Alice falls for it (Is this not the most GULLIBLE FAMILY. My mother would have wanted to meet this lady IN PERSON)

Elizabeth finds out from Amy that Josh use to date Caroline’s sister, but a fight caused them to break up. She says that Josh is dating someone named Jessica and that they all went on a double date she heard from a girl named Melanie. Jessica meanwhile decides to call Josh because a magazine suggested she should let him know she’s still thinking of him (LOL SHE HAS IT SOOO WRONG!). He’s looked for her after school and she says she was out sick. Then he tells her that they’re again double dating but this time with his cousin Meg and a friend of hers. Elizabeth comes home and confronts Jessica, but she turns the tables and says Josh lied to her and told her he was 14. She pretends to be hurt and to “Tell him off” when he calls. Elizabeth again eats this up. (Earlier on Mr. Wakefield comes home with tickets, but Steven already says he has a double date. He feels bad that Jessica can’t go and offers to take her on a special trip just him and her (on a glass-bottom boat). We then find out that the girl Steve is going to the circus with’s name is Megan.

Everything starts to fall apart. Jessica finds out that the surprise date is the circus. Then they show up at her house- Steve is Megan’s date-. Then Josh tells her he’s not over his ex but he wants them to be friends. When they get to the circus Jessica sees Ned, Alice, and Liz and flees. In the bathroom, Jessica sees Anita and her friend, and she has thought that if she can get Anita and Josh to makeup, she can ghost Josh and leave. So she tells Anita how much Josh still loves her. After the first half, Anita comes over and starts talking to Josh and Jess slips off. Steven tries to get the truth out of her. He says he won’t tell on her to Josh, but it’s doubtful she can pull this off. He tells her he thinks Josh and Anita are getting back together. But at this point, Jessica doesn’t care. She slips off to get a coke but bumps into Elizabeth who warns her that her parents are right behind them. Not knowing where to go she just goes back to her seat. After it's over, the Wakefields spot Steve and then they see Jessica. Jessica couldn’t convince Josh to let her leave. Steve convinces his parents to let her ride home with them and in the car, she finally tells Josh the truth. He’s shocked but recovers and handles it amazingly well (remembering a time when he took the car trying to be older). Her parents don’t take it so well and ground her for two weeks. But at school, Jessica comes out as the tragic heroine that got Josh and Anita back together.

Kimberly Haver -a Unicorn- is having a party and Ellen tells Jessica is going to be the party of the year. Jessica tells Ellen she’s grounded but Ellen isn’t worried because she knows Jessica always finds a way to do what she wants. Elizabeth shows Tom McKay an essay contest sign-up that offers a hundred dollars. He shows his younger brother Dylan but he says there’s no chance he’d win it and walks away.

My Thoughts: Josh was a WHOLE lot nicer than Scott was@ Jessica really should count her blessings that even though it turned out bad, it could have been A LOT worse! Josh could have been the kind of guy that *did* take her out just the two of them. Then because he’d just broken up with his old girlfriend, he could have *easily* tried to put Jessica into a situation she wasn’t ready for. But Josh really did seem like a nice guy. As much as I don’t tend to have much sympathy for Jessica, because she puts all the things that happen to her on herself, I kind of did want her to find a way to escape. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wakefields ran into Kerry Geleen and her parents *at* the circus. But I kinda felt like she’d gone throw enough. The high school version (Jessica) would have CONTINUED to push up on Josh and take him from Anita. I went to the circus a time or two way back when (Ringling Brothers and UniverSOUL) and I tried to picture if the tent really was that small that you could see people sitting across from you And the answer is NO! So I wondered really how small the Sweet Valley Arena here is and how crowded it was. Because if this event was as popular as the book made it sound it shouldn’t have been that easy for the Wakefields to spot Steve, Megan, Josh, and Jessica. Or maybe the population of Sweet Valley is just VERY small. Another thing is gullible must run in this family. Alice has just as much herself to blame for Jessica getting as far as she did into this deception. You’re a mother and you don’t want to actually MEET the person your daughter is going out of town with. BAD LOOK ALICE! VERY BAD LUCK! If I had a twelve-year-old daughter, I would be VERY careful with who I let my kid go OUT OF TOWN with. I know this is Sweet Valley and all but………

Good grief, Jessica, you're TWELVE. What are you doing dating someone who's old enough to DRIVE? Here's a girl who's going to be trouble in a couple years (OK, we get to see that in the Sweet Valley High books). She certainly gets her feet wet in the dating scene here.

Sneaking out to date a boy much too old for her, Jessica finds out that dating isn't quite what she thought it was from books and movies. What bugs me? She could have been in SO much trouble here, but she wasn't. Everything was fine, the boy still likes her and is a friend, her brother bails her out, even her parents aren't too steamed. Seriously where is everybody's head right now?

And Liz? You have GOT to get your head out of the sand. Jess LIES ALL THE TIME and to be that willingly ignorant...you've gone for doormat to enabler. This just isn't healthy.

This one is a real comedy of errors from start to finish, to the point where you get a bit of a vicarious "oh-no-don't-look-now" feeling just from reading it. It leaves me with two questions:
(1) How does a 16 year old not notice that he's chatting up a pre-pubescent 12 year old?
(2) If

It is OK. I don't like it as much as the other books in the series.
I'd suggest don't read it. But it gets a little exciting in one of the chapters.

I remember really enjoying this book when I was younger. I probably read it when I was about 11 or 12, at a time when I desperately wanted to seem more mature and my friends and I were getting interested in boys.

Re-reading it as an adult I definitely felt quite different about it! It does seem fairly far-fetched that Josh didn't realise that Jessica was only 12, and a little bit creepy for the writer to have a 16 year old kissing a 12 year old child in retrospect.

The amount of lying that Jessica does also made me cringe! I do forgive it to a certain extent because when we are young we do tend to be more selfish and single-minded, without thinking much about the consequences (although Jessica takes this to the absolute extreme!!). One thing that really struck me in this book though was that she and Elizabeth are 'best friends' and supposedly very close, but she continually lies to her own twin and thinks nothing of it, even when Elizabeth has basically figured it all out. And Elizabeth's trusting nature and patience with Jessica are astounding considering how many times she's been burnt in the past!

As mentioned though, these issues really didn't bother me/weren't noticeable when I was younger. And I still enjoyed the grand finale when everything unravels for Jess!

It gets really tiring reading the same old pattern with these books.
Jess is a selfish bitch, Liz is a doormat, the Wakefield parents are the worst ever. lol

I can't help but love them though! My favourites growing up were probably Senior Year and University, so I can't wait to eventually get to those.

This is how stupid Elizabeth is:

In all likelihood Jessica was telling the truth, and Josh had mistaken her for someone else. Who could tell? Maybe she and Jessica had a look-alike somewhere they knew nothing about! Oh dear god Liz. You make the same mistakes every time.

Everyone seemed to be feeling bad for Jessica now - as if missing the circus were the biggest disaster in months. They'd probably be all extra nice to her for days, Elizabeth thought grumpily.
But then, it was a shame for her sister to be missing the circus. Even the glass-bottomed boat trip wouldn't be as much fun. Elizabeth vowed to try to be nice to her twin as well - even though she suspected Jessica would land on her feet. She always did!
Yes Liz, because you're a doormat and everyone lets Jess do whatever they want.

In the latest edition of Elizabeth is a Wet Wipe and Jessica is an Utter Sociopath, Jessica meets The Older Boy at a skating rink, the one which has never appeared in any Sweet Valley title before or since. The Older Boy is Josh Angler, a 16 year old who goes to Sweet Valley High, the same school that the twins' older brother, Steven, attends. For context, Jessica is 12 years old in this book. TWELVE. But of course, she claims that she's 14 to Josh (the fact that she added "and a HALF" should have given the game away right there and then, so we can assume Josh isn't too bright. That and the fact he's constantly mentioning he's never seen her at school). Jessica concocts a dastardly plan to fool her parents that she will be at Kerry Glen's (who?) house in Tahoe for the weekend, even forgoing the opportunity to go to the circus with her family, so you know she's serious about Josh. She will instead go on a secret double date with Josh and his cousin, Megan. Turns out, Megan's date is none other than STEVEN WAKEFIELD. I don't even need to carry on, you know where this is going. The only saving grace is that Lois Waller being fat doesn't get mentioned once.

You know what's wild about this? Lila is the voice of reason. Lila! Who until I started rereading some Sweet Valley books I thought was the proverbial mean girl of the books! But it turns out that Lila is actually pretty dull (just rich), and Jessica is the hyperpsychobitch of the series. It's Lila who first points out that a twelve-year-old should not set her sights on a sixteen-year-old: Lila still couldn't believe it. "He's too old for you," she objected. "I'm telling you, Jess. The second he finds out you're still in middle school, he'll skate off into the sunset" (2).

I remember sympathizing more with Elizabeth than with Jessica when I read these books as a kid, but as an adult I can't decide what to think. On the one hand Jessica is a self-obsessed, overdramatic, self-serving, gaslighting mess. On the other hand...Elizabeth is really pretty boring, isn't she? She tells us in one breath that she's bailed her twin out of her chores too often that week already (35) and then in the next breath agrees to help again even though she ordinarily...wouldn't have been so generous (35). And then not long thereafter she lets Jessica gaslight her into apologizing when (as usual) it's Jessica who's gone off the rails, and Jessica of course feels not the slightest bit of remorse. (Elizabeth, kiddo, it's time to grow a spine. And a bit of self-awareness.) The rest of the family is similarly bewitched—when Jessica thinks she'll be missing a trip to the circus because she has out-of-town plans (which, to be clear, she doesn't: she has plans for a secret date), her parents are like "oh, poor thing, going to a lake house for the weekend, we'll have to make it up to her by taking her on a special trip by herself".

Anyway. The short version is that Jessica gets caught but not as caught as she should be; she gets off almost scot-free, because Jessica and consequences don't mix; and dear god, a sixteen-year-old should be able to tell that a twelve-year-old is too young for him (even one who's claiming to be fourteen—which is also too young for him).

The more of these I reread, the more I think that it's never actually been a double-heroine series—Jessica is the heroine, or as close as we get to one, and Elizabeth is her not-terribly-sharp foil.

This is one of my favorite books in the Twins series! I still don't buy that Jessica passed for a freshman, though.

I sort of noticed it in other books, but this one really cemented the fact that the ages here make no sense. Liz and Jess are 12 in sixth grade, but five years later they are 16 year old juniors in SVH. Huh? Not only that, Steven is three grades older than them, but is somehow only 14, but when they are juniors he is a freshman in college, only two grades ahead.

The continuity, it hurts.

Oh, and this line actually made me laugh out loud when Liz said it: "Maybe she and Jessica had a look-alike somewhere that they knew nothing about!" Is this foreshadowing for Margo?!?

Sweet Valley Twins 15 - The Older Boy
Jess meets a much older boy - Josh, 16, a SVH Junior. He somehow believes Jess is 14.5 not TWELVE, and asks her out. Jess and Lila conspire to deceive her parents, and she’s on her way! It turns out to be a double date with Josh’s friend and his gf - a freshman. Jess says she just moved to Sweet Valley, and knows no one. Crisis averted! Turns out Josh used to date Caroline’s sister, Anita, and her cover almost gets blown at the Dairy Burger… but things go nerve rackingly smoothly, and she gets a kiss on the lips and another (mystery) date! During the week, Josh runs into Liz and assumes she is Jess, and of course, Liz starts putting it all together. Jess tells her parents she’s staying with Kerry Glenn for the weekend at her family’s cabin, but she’s staying at Lila’s so she can go out with Josh. She convinces Liz she and Jess are just having phone dates, and Lila pretends to be Kerry’s Mum on the phone (which negligent Alice buys…?) so everything is set for Jessica’s mystery date with Josh! Days before, Ned announces that he managed to get tickets to the circus for Saturday night!! And I see it now 🧐 Jess does consider cancelling, but sticks with her lie and her date. Ned feels so bad about her missing out that he promises to take her out the weekend after. Meanwhile, Amy gets the Anita goss from Caroline and Liz realises Jess is dating Josh and lying about it. She breaks the news, and Jess admits to them dating but says she thought Josh was 14, not 16! She acts grossed out and says she never wants to see him again. Josh calls to confirm and tells Jess he’s bringing her cousin Megan and her date - someone call Stan or Stu and I’m thinking Steven 😏 And yep, Steven tells his parents about his hot date at the circus with Megan and her cousin and his date ☺️ Josh tells Jess they’re going to the circus on the way to pick up Megan’s date - from the Wakefields. While Megan goes to get Steven, Josh dumps her for Anita. Jess suggests going back to Lila’s (I would demand it), but he wants them to go as friends. Steven gets in the car and doesn’t blow her cover - just teases her and it’s great 😂 Jess sees Anita and tries to convince her to make up with Josh, and yet, she still doesn’t leave because she doesn’t want Josh to know she’s only 12, even though she doesn’t want to date him and Anita knows she’s out with Josh and will probably tell him? Steven agrees to not tell anyone, she runs into Liz who doesn’t bust her, but eventually, they run into her parents and game over. Josh gets over his anger at her being 12 pretty quickly, but her parents ground her for only 2 weeks. Meanwhile she’s a hero at school and really learns nothing!
My rating - 8/10 - These are the Jess plots I love - where she gets in over her head, but isn’t nasty. Best early SVT so far!

I thought this book was pretty good.I dove right into the book. I could barely put the book down! It's fun to read and shows a lot of valuble lessons in life like, telling the truth, forgive, and don't grow up to fast. In this book Jessica Wakefield meets Josh Angler, a 16 year old boy who goes to Sweet Valley High. Jessica didn't think their relationship was going to go far, until Josh asks her on a second date. No other than Jessica's brother, Stephen is with them on their date! See if Stephen will tell Josh that his sister is only 12 years old or keep her dark secert.

I liked this book because it is about people around my age and i knew how some of the characters felt.

Two of the main character are, Jessica Wakefield and Elizabeth Wakefield. Jessica Wakefield is a strong loyal person. She loves to have fun and never bores you. Her passion is cheerleading. She is always looking for adveneture, and always figures out a way to get herslef out of the mess she got herself into.Elizabeth on the other hand would rather read a book then do any type of sport. She's the more down to earth, and likes things the way they are. Her passion is to learn and help people. Even thought Jessica and her twin Elizabeth look alike they are the exact oppisite.

I strongly suggest you to read this book if you like drama, mysteries, and if you want to have a laugh or two while your reading.

I picked up one of the Sweet Valley Twins novel at the library (before my strict read in order only rule) and fell in love with the California twins and their friends and family. I had just started reading thicker chapter books, and joining the library summer reading club, I went through these books pretty quick. I was excited that I could read and really fell in love with books and reading. I believe I was about 7-9 when I read these books so it was exciting to read about 12 year old popular preteens. I could relate to both Elizabeth and Jessica, and really could not pick which twin I liked better. I would not finish this series as I would quickly move on to Sweet Valley High (Double Love). These are very tame books, and any age could read them. First crushes and bullying were the big issues that I can remember. This is very Full House (TV series) kind of books.

I didn't have an interest in reading these books, but I think one of my sisters must have because sometimes they were around the house and I was the kind of kid who'd randomly pick up and breeze through anything that was sitting there. I have no idea why I read this one at all, because I didn't even like books about boyfriends. Maybe I was just really bored. In any case, it's the usual absurd litany of silly, complicated lies surrounding a Wakefield twin trying to date a boy and lying about her age to do it. At least that never ends well in this kind of book, but even for these kinds of books, the moral and plot were both unusually transparent. The obligatory "Elizabeth getting mistaken for Jessica and discovering a plot element" thing was present too.

Jessica really wants to date an older boy and she worries that she'll seem too childish if she admits how young she is, but gosh, she's sophisticated and deserves to be taken seriously! After lying about her age to get and keep the boy's attention, Jessica has trouble keeping him from discovering how young she is, and her twin sister gets involved when she's mistaken for Jessica. Will the truth come out?

In answer to that last: Yes. It always does. And the girl learns her lesson, except for when this happens again later in the series. I usually end up giving low star ratings to books that depend on shallow deception to have a plot, so that's what's behind my rating here.

OMG Jessica pretends she is fourteen (and a half!) in order to go out with a sixteen-year-old guy, who doesn't have ANY idea she's in fact only twelve. And it's fantastic! So much sneaking around and lying done on Jess' part, and naturally it ALL falls apart big time...

I liked Josh too, he wasn't a sleazy older guy but actually really nice, and he was still pining for his recent ex and more interested in just hanging with Jess as a friend anyway. Aw.

Jessica meets a boy who is 16. Although she's only 12 she likes him and acts like she goes to the high school like he does. The answer, at least to Jessica, is to pretend she is 15 and go on dates with him. She knows full well that her parents would approve so she gets Lila to help her.

As usual with Jessica's schemes, this one backfires on her. The story shows how much her parents really care about her, but also how much dependence Jessica puts on using lies to get her way.

In this one, twelve-year-old Jessica lies to a high school junior with a lot of emotional baggage about her age (among other things) so she can "date" him, while also managing to manipulate her entire family into feeling bad for her...????

Delightful child, that Jessica
