For many a spectacular skyline and magnificent scenery is their first awareness of the islands off Arisaig and Mallaig, yet their history is as central as their geographic situation to the story of the Hebrides. This is the first book ever to be written on the collective history of the little group of islands between Ardnamurchan and Skye.
The structure of this book is a little strange. It is thematic and broken down by isle with chapters chronological. It relies heavily on primary source quotes. This takes a little getting used to but when you do, works fairly well. However the history is lacking detail in places and also detailed discussion.
I finished the book interested and enthused about the Small Isles, yet a little disappointed about what this book could have been.
