খারাপ না কিন্তু হ্যাগার্ডের অন্যান্য বইগুলোর সাথে তুলনা করলে বলা হবে উনার এর থেকে বেশ ভালো ভালো বই পড়েছি। এন্ডিংটা মনমতো হয়নি, হঠাৎ শেষ হয়ে গেল এমন। আরেকটু ভালো হতে পারত।

অনন্য- অসাধারণ- অকল্পনীয়, হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ড এর আরেকটি অনবদ্য সৃষ্টি!

যদিও একে প্রেম কাহিনী বলা যাবে না। তবে প্রেম-ভালোবাসার পবিত্র পরিণতিই এই বইয়ের মূল সারমর্ম। যুদ্ধ, প্রেম, নারী, সংঘাত, রাজ্য, ক্ষমতা, লোভ, ধর্ম, সততা, বীরত্ব কি নেই বইটিতে। তবে বইটির নাম বেলশ্যাযযার না হয়ে অন্য কিছু হলে ভালো হতো। এখানে ছোট করে বলে রাখি অনন্য- অসাধারণ- অকল্পনীয়, হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ড এর আরেকটি অনবদ্য সৃষ্টি?

যদিও একে প্রেম কাহিনী বলা যাবে না। তবে প্রেম-ভালোবাসার পরির পরিণতিই এই বইয়ের মূল সারমর্ম, যুদ্ধ (এম, "নারী সংঘাত, রাজ্য ক্ষমতা ক্ষমতা। লোভ, ধর্ম, বইটির নাম বেলশ্যায়যার না হয়ে অন্য কিছ হলে ভালো হতো। এখানে ছোট করে বলে রাখি বেলশ্যাযযার নামটা একজন নেতিবাচক নীচ চরিত্রের।।

রামোসের শরীরে বইছে রাজরক্ত। তবে ফারাও এর সিংহাসন সে চায় না। ঘটনাক্রমে রামোস প্রেমে পরে রাণী এটায়রার। তবে সে প্রেম দীর্ঘস্থায়ী হয়নি। পিতৃপ্রতিম ও শিক্ষক বেলুস এর কারনেই রামোস নিজেকে ফিরে পায়। কিন্তু তার সামনে দুঃসহ সময়, নানা ঘাত প্রতিঘাত পেরোতে হবে। সুন্দরী মায়রা যখন তার বিবাহিত স্ত্রী হয় তখনও কি রামোস জানতো সামনে কি ভয়াবহ ভবিষ্যত তার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে? হয়তো জানতো। কিন্তু তারপর? জানতে বইটি পড়ার কোনো বিকল্প নেই।।

«Валтасар» — последнее из опубликованных произведений Райдера Хаггарда. Написано оно в духе всех его работ на тему древнего мира — с минимальным соответствием исторической действительности. Читателю хватит некоторых фактов о прошлом, на основе которых для него будет развёрнуто полотно повествования. На этот раз речь касалась событий вокруг крушения Вавилона. Это царство, некогда славившееся могуществом, оказалось на пути персидского царя Кира, вознамерившегося включить Вавилон в состав своей империи. Но эта историческая данность — антураж, несущий ознакомительную цель. Главнее наблюдать за жизнеописанием некоего лица, называющегося сыном фараона.

Curious novel which culminates in Belshazzar's feast and the writing on the wall, mentioned in the Bible (Daniel 5). I couldn't take the love story seriously, though. The fact that Ramose raised Myra from a child and practically adopted her makes him her father, in my opinion, so it was quite weird and disturbing that he actually wanted to marry her. It could have been possible in ancient times, I don't know, but it detracted a lot from the enjoyment of the story.
I liked the character of Ramose's teacher, Belus, best of all. A physician and seer of immense ability, he reminded Gandalf (Lord of the Rings) by his participation in every plot and venture. Unlike Ramose, who mostly just let things happen to him.

হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগারর্ডের বই মানেই বিশেষ কিছু। ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি এই ক্ল্যাসিক্যাল ফিকশন ও। একটানা পড়েছি, ৩০০+ পেজের বই মাত্র দুদিনে শেষ করেছি। গল্পের একটি বিষয় আমার কাছে ভালো লাগেনি,(বললে স্পয়লার হয়ে যাবে তাই বলছি না) সেজন্যই রেটিং: ৩.৫/৫ দিলাম।

মাত্র শেষ করলাম বেলশ্যাযযার।

আমার কাছে বইটা মাঝারি মানের মনে হয়েছে,
কারনো হ্যাগার্ডের লিখনি শক্তি আরো খুবই ভালো,,

তবে বইটা পড়ে একটা আক্ষেপ রয়ে গেলো
শেষ হয়েও হইলো না টাইপ,

অনুবাদ নিয়ে কোন অভিযোগ নেই,

বই রেটিং ৫.৩ দিবো কারন আমি হ্যাগার্ডের

A story set in ancient Egypt and Babylon. Ramose is the illegitimate son of the Pharoah. He becomes a soldier and then a merchant, very creepily marries his adoptive daughter Myra, and goes on a quest to rescue her after she is kidnapped to marry the king of Babylon. The prophet Daniel is a background character, he helps protect Myra because she is apparently a princess of Israel.
I didn’t think much of it. For one thing, it was boring. For another, Ramose’s mysoginistic attitude really put me off, especially his utter lack of respect for his mother Chloe. There was this bit where the new Pharoah who had overthrown Ramose’s father is coming to visit them, Chloe is happy and Ramose is horrified that she’s happy.
“Don’t you realise this is the man who killed your lord, the father of your son?”
“He was my lord, but he loved me for a few years then got tired of me and married me off to another man. And he was your father, but he tried to have you executed on trumped up charges. It’s only thanks to this new Pharoah giving you his protection that you’re still alive, and for that I’d forgive him anything - besides, he didn’t kill your father, his men did that without his knowledge.”
*disapproving head shake* “Typical shallow woman. He killed her lord and the father of her son, but because he’s Pharoah she welcomes him like a god.”
Plus, of course, the fact that Ramose married his daughter. He was constantly saying “She is not my daughter”. Dude, you may not share any DNA but you raised her from a toddler and she called you 'Father’ until she was an adult. She’s your daughter and you are gross. This made it very hard to root for the characters, since them settling down to a life of wedded bliss is not what I consider a happy ending.
