An amazing book for those who wish to dig deeper into the history of the International Geophysical Year and the foundation of the Antarctic Treaty System. The author worked for the New York Times as a science writer and infuses his account (pub. 1961) with the utopian idealism of the era without sacrificing journalistic detail. An authoritative account of a great international effort in the name of Science and Humanitarianism (whatever those are).
