Assyrian and Babylonian Chronicles

Rate this book
This invaluable collection of Mesopotamian texts of the type labeled "chronicles" is divided into two sections: studies and texts. Each study elucidates essential chronicle historical and source material. Each text is presented with transliteration, translation, and commentary. Indexes, line drawings, and plates complete this volume. The book has long been considered a model of its type, and Eisenbrauns is happy to make it available again.

"In the books of the Old Testament, histiography reaches an unprecedented height. The clarity and beauty of style found in the ancient Hebrew narratives is unique among historical documents from the ancient Near Eastern civilization."

Indeed! The ancient Assyrian and Babylonian histories are just boring. I did not enjoy these at all, though it was sort of interesting to see events described in the Bible also in the Assyrian texts.

What can I say? I'm such a history geek! According to my understanding, Grayson's work is the definitive translation of the ancient texts. I have found it to be invaluable in providing background information for a novel I'm researching, set in Ancient Babylon.
