This book is amazing. I've been considering story consulting for a little bit, but reading this book really cemented things for me. I learned a lot about the business and what they do and rates and marketing and networking ideas that I think can really, genuinely help me.
I'm still working through some of the exercises at the end of the book, but that's fine. Even just going through a couple of them so far has really helped me clarify what it is I want to do with my business and why I'm doing it.
Derek Rydall knows what he's talking about and it helps that the books in chock full of other resources to research and engage with. The book totally fired me up for getting involved in the industry again and what I think has really been the answer I've been looking for. I know it sounds cliched and stupid, but I don't really care. I enjoy writing and I studied screenwriting and I've dedicated so many years of my life to stories and story and character development that it's absolutely natural for me to want to stay close to that and I've been searching for something that isn't necessarily screenwriting, but still deals with it and narrative development and also helps people and I love developing other peoples' stories. My writer friends could tell you how many "story meetings" we've had and basically, I felt like this book gave me a name for what I want to do with my life and career.
It's a great resource and will be kept close to my desk for a long time.
So many books on how to write screenplays. They seem to go around in circles and if you can't sell a screenplay, write a book about it or start a consulting biz where you help people to do the same thing. Almost sounds like a pyramid scam.
