He trained as a medical doctor specialized in psychiatry with a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology research and holds degrees from Stanford University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He has held a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology research at the University of California San Diego and was Professor of Psychiatry for eleven years at the University of New Mexico. After twenty years of intermission, Strassman was the first person in the United States to undertake human research with psychedelic, hallucinogenic, or entheogenic substances with his research on DMT. He is the author of the well-known book "DMT: The Spirit Molecule" which summarizes his academic research into DMT.
Exactly what I was looking for!! Practical information as well as basic science (although could've been a bit more in depth) behind most classic and some additional substances. Perfect to receive an overview. Ready to dive deep into the more specific literature now!
A very handy summary of the scientific literature about psychedelic studies to date curated by a psychiatrist. There’s also an introduction to every molecule with pharmacological, botanical and historical data. Very useful and so promising for therapy in so many psychiatric disorders.
This book is a perfect introduction to those new to psychedelics, covering both practical aspects, background information on research and the different psychedelics. The neutral, yet engaging, tone of Strassman (one with extensive experience in the field) is refreshing and trustworthy.
A pretty good book, however, it is hard to follow all the chemist part of it, once you pass that section of the book it is easy to follow, I thought it was going be a bit more “hippie” but it turns out to be a very professional book. I like that it shows mostly the con´s about using any of these psychedelics. It gives you enough information in order to go ahead with the “trip” or think it twice before you do it. Definitely a book that everyone should read so we can help someone who is struggling with a problem (depression, PTSD, substance abuse, and other disorders ) that may be solve with no so traditional “medicine”. It is amazing all the things that some of these “drugs” can do. Definitely we need to continue with the studies of these psychedelics as they might be the solutions of many social problems.
This book was so good I immediately emailed the author upon finishing to express my gratitude.
It is clear, balanced, succinct, and explains complex concepts in a clear and concise way. The author’s background speaks for itself. Dr. Strassman is most well known for discovering the molecule melatonin. He also ran the first clinical trials on psychedelics since research was shut down in the 60s by the Controlled Substances Act.
I particularly love that he wove in not only Buddhist and modern spiritual concepts, but ancient Jewish teachings as well, including the philosophy of Maimonides and teachings from the Bible.
This book is short, to the point, and well worth the read if you are at all curious about the power of psychedelics.
Pharmacological calvanism - you should inly take drugs to treat illness. Not for pleasure, or spiritual purpose
The most striking effect of psychedelics is that they seem more real than real
A “true hallucination” is believing what you are experiencing is objective reality and this rarely happens on a psychedelic.
The term spiritual may concern the idea of “god”, or even “sacred/profane”.
Spiritual experiences can be mystical/unitive (like eastern religion) or “interactive relational” (like the biblical tradition)
A psychedelics effect results from who gives them, who takes them, and why (set/setting)
Grof- they are non specific amplifiers of unconscious mental material
They )by def - manifest and disclose the minds contents
U can withdrawals from a drug but not be addicted to it because you dont crave it
Daily dose of classic psychedelics reduces their effects. With the exception if dmt. And 5meo gives greater responses to the same dose
Psychological risk of use is low with care to set/setting/contraindications. The rate of psychosis for more than 24 hrs is lower than the general population.
77% of psychedelic users reported flashbacks, particularly from a bad experience
Connectivity and entropy can last for days and weeks after a psilocybin experience
Psychedelics stimulate the growth of new neurons and increase neuroplasticity
Psychedelics are powerful anti inflammatory drugs
People who have drug induced mystical experiences have increased acceptance, openess, and compassion - but this may not always be a good things
Peyote use 5000 yrs San pedro use 3000 yrs Mushroom use 10,000 yrs Toad venom 3000 yrs(?)
There is the dmt world and there is this one. You interact with one or the other depending on how much dmt is in the brain. Its endogenous presence regulates your reality
Aya produces rapid benefits to people with anxiety and depression
Nasal ketamine has onset in 3-5 min and lasts 30-60 min
Salvia os the most potent naturally occurring psychedelic. And can produce “true hallucinations”.
The trip begins when i decide to take it - leo zeff
Self knowledge, Some knowledge of the terrain, and overall health,0 should be a prerequisite
Its possible for example, that u may want to replay past traumas in order to generate more self-pity
If you resist the trip experience, letting go benefits you. Slow breathing helps you. Relaxing your body helps you. Holding a hand might help. Pushing agains someone for a time might help
Be wary of interacting w beings who seem menacing. Do not allow them to force you to do anything
For bad trips: Empathize Decrease sensory input Nonsexual physical contact Move outside to fresh air Try milk, vitamin c, niacin Valium or klonopin are mild and safe Thorazine, halodol are strong
As a fellow healthcare professional, I expected more from this book. There is minimal info detailing the significant drug interactions with psychedelics and antidepressants -the author acknowledges the interaction in just one paragraph of the entire book. Any serotonin-effecting antidepressant blunts the effects of psychedelics, and there have been many articles published prior to the publication of this 2022 book. According to the CDC, greater than 15% of adults have taken an antidepressant in the last 30 days.
Pros: -professional, accurate, well written, good intentions on educating the public -emphasis on set and setting and preparation for tripping -other concerns with taking psychedelics including unscrupulous practitioners -thorough list of additional resources and readings provided
Cons: -no details on drug interactions, which greatly impact the effectiveness and safety of psychedelics -why is there so much history content, book title is Practical Guide -NO pictures or diagrams whatsoever, would be particularly helpful for sections on the brain and mind -format and layout need improving
Bottom line: The book has potential but needs some improvements and additional information. Currently, there are better resources out there including reputable websites, journal articles, and other books.
Rick Strassman provides an objective and well researched take on many common psychedelic substances and gives an expert account of their history, uses, risks, mechanisms, and legal status. He discusses their scientific, religious, and spiritual backgrounds and addresses some of the broader philosophical points questions that they raise.
It is a must-read for anyone interested not only in psychedelics, but also for those interested in therapy and mental health. I would encourage anyone with preconceived ideas about psychedelics to read this book.
First of all, drugs are swell. Secondly, this is a HANDBOOK, meaning - if you plan to dabble in drugs (like some shady people I may or may not know; or am or may not am) - you can find all of the relevant information: dose depending on your goals for the trip, safety precautions, expected common effects, health concerns and etc. Brought to you by [an overqualified author] a Medical Doctor. So if you ever planned to try this LSD thing and were wondering "Could that break my brain?" or already dropped a tad too much acid and think "Lupen bimber folda monker", this book may be precious.
Super interesting book that touches on the cutting edge uses of psychedelics in treating neurological conditions while also addressing what we do and do not know about them and why. Talks about the history and applications of the substances and how they will be used in the future. Well written book that was a change of pace of my usual style. Favorite part was the talks on PTSD treatment and I would recommend to anyone interested in the field of neurology/psychology.
Un ottimo libro per iniziare a scoprire e capire il mondo delle sostanze psichedeliche e la loro importanza. Scrittura asciutta, chiara ed essenziale. Utile anche a chi ha già studiato precedentemente i temi trattati.
Ugh this book should be called what you already know about psychedelics…it was so boring! I was hoping to learn something new but I did not find anything new in the 55% of the book I read it was just a rehash of everything I already knew. Too bad I loved Rick Strassmans book about DMT.
Rick Strassman covers all the basic information you need to enter the world of psychedelics while keeping the information interesting and palatable. A really fun read but incredibly informative. It is evident through descriptions of his career and the depth of his knowledge that he has decades of valuable experience. Read it!!
Most of it is quite practical, promotes reasonable harm reduction approaches (including very clear "you should not do that if you do not have a very good reason" and "people might abuse you") and some basic orientation in history and potential of the practice. Also clearly steers away from Grof-like mysticism and treats the substances as a tool (very often not a great one), not as a goal in itself.
Was a good explanation and break down of different psychedelics and how set and setting play an immense role for the trip, was a bit textbook-like in some portions but overall well written and helpful to widen my understanding of the topic
