Carroll Davenport #2

Cape Fear Murders: A Carroll Davenport Mystery

Rate this book
Staying out of trouble isn’t a challenge, except when your Italian ex-father-in-law is involved with organized crime, the man in your life is a former FBI agent, and you have a penchant for finding dead bodies. In the past year, contractor Carroll Davenport’s life was turned upside down when she found herself in a maelstrom of corruption and political intrigue. In search of tranquility, she begins volunteering at a local public garden. Carroll thinks she’s finally put her detective days behind her…until she stumbles across an indiscreet crime scene in the Arboretum’s teahouse. As if finding the bodies of a well-known local politician and his latest flame isn’t bad enough, Carroll’s day just goes downhill from there. She arrives home to the news that heartthrob Ben Satterwhite is lost at sea. Then Davis, her young friend and part-time employee, turns out to have leads that might help expose the perpetrator—but the information doesn’t come without a price. Suddenly Carroll is unwillingly drawn back into the kind of predicament she’s sworn to avoid. Sheriff Stan Council thinks that getting her out of town is a fine idea, before he learns that she’s off to attend a Vitelli family funeral. She thinks he’s just being overprotective, but nothing could be further from the truth. When an attempt is made on her life, she doesn’t know if it’s related to the Mob or to the murders. The danger escalates when she returns home, with one disastrous event after another. Someone is determined to destroy the life she’s worked so hard to build—but who? And is Carroll next on the killer’s list?

Convoluted and completely nonsensical but somewhat enjoyable. However growing tired of both stereotypes against Christians and women voices being feministic caricatures ( recently finished “ Where The Light Enters” by Sarah Donati and experience the same issues with her female protagonists) The main character in this little murder mystery is trying way to hard and ends up being utterly ridiculous and un-likable. Too bad… it had some potential.

After reading "Island Murders" by Wanda Canada, I was eager to read the sequel, "Cape Fear Murders." And, like the first book, the characters, the plot and the setting were so realistic that I was drawn into the story.
I highly recommend both books!

I really liked it. I want to read her first "Carroll Davenport" book, Island Murders. I wish there were more.

#2 of 2. Local Wilmington author writing about a mystery in Wilmington. Just ok. Nothing gruesome or sexual.

I picked this book up while on vacation in North Carolina as a souvenir of the area and because I enjoy indie authors. This book was a good one as far as having a strong main character who trying to help the community discover who has killed three people in the Wilmington Beach area. I would have liked to have had more description as far as the area it took place in and maybe more suspense, but it was a decent read.

Sadly, I found this book less well-written than its predecessor. That said, still an entertaining read and I find myself caring about the protagonist very much.

It enjoyable, but might have been better if I had read the first book in the series first.
