From the Foreward by Minnie Bruce of us are here, beautiful and various in the light of these photographs, convinced of the importance of seeing each other, knowing that to claim our selves openly and fully is to lay claim to survival and joy.... The photographs disclose the vital work of lesbians as we invent our lives, and the passionate, committed work of lesbians within many political movements.... These pictures urge us to see our selves, our fire of life, to imagine and create a future where we see each other, distinctly, in all our differences, and honor each other there.
This is a book of photographs of lesbians living their lives -- working, embracing their lovers, engaging in activism, relaxing with friends -- just living, and willing to be photographed living in the belief that being seen might make a difference, might make the world a better place for other women. Each woman was given space in the back of the book to introduce herself and talk about her life, and although these were very short introductions (the longest were three or four paragraphs), I felt moments of connection and realised some of the narrowness of my vision. I need to read much more and learn much more, especially about pre-Stonewall lesbian life & culture.
