Bow Street Duchess Mystery #4

Penance for the Dead

Rate this book
Old scandals and destructive truths are exposed when a woman from Hugh Marsden’s past is murdered in cold blood.

Principal Bow Street Officer Hugh Marsden is used to living in the shadow of disgrace. First, as the illegitimate son of the late Viscount Neatham, and second, as the man who permanently maimed his half-brother in a duel six years ago. Reviled by the posh ton , Hugh happily severed ties to polite society—until the enigmatic Duchess of Fournier, Audrey Sinclair entered his world and turned it upside down.

Now, Hugh’s half-sister Eloisa has done the same. Just days after returning to London and hiring him to find a missing person—someone Eloisa claims holds a destructive family secret—she is murdered in cold blood on a ballroom floor. The prime suspect? Hugh Marsden.

When Audrey learns the Bow Street officer she’s come to cherish is on the run and being hunted for the crime, she vows to clear his name, no matter what it takes. Restricted to clandestine meetings, Audrey and Hugh’s investigation to find Eloisa’s true killer peels back years of Neatham family secrecy, and with it, a diabolical scheme to conceal the circumstances surrounding Hugh’s birth.

The desperate killer will stop at nothing to prevent Audrey and Hugh from unearthing the rest of the wicked truth—even if it means sending them both to an early grave.

Penance for the Dead, the fourth riveting installment in the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series is perfect for fans of the Lady Sherlock, Veronica Speedwell, and PBS Masterpiece’s Miss Scarlet & the Duke.

The longing in this one is intense! This is supposed to be a mystery but I. Am. Here. For. It!

“I want you more than I’ve ever thought possible, but not as my secret.”

This was the best yet for this series. That is so rare in a fourth book, usually I prefer a trilogy because the fourth book starts to get stale, but this was so good. It was short, tight and packed full of action and drama. And there was so much longing and unfulfilled lust! I have serious bangiety from these two and I like that he keeps resisting her. I would never like any of that in a pure romance but for some reason it works in this.

One thing though, every single acquaintance or family member these two have will likely be murdered or framed for it by the time this series is over. The author does such a great job with building the mystery and the reason behind them that I never put on my sceptical pants as I read this. I mean, what are the odds that every noble person in England is somehow murdered and the duchess is always there to witness it? A little far fetched but I DON’T CARE! *spins around*

This was so good, now I need the next one pronto.

Thanks to BookSirens for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Hard one to review without giving away too much of the plot. I just enjoyed the book. The characters are unique, and the plots are original. I recommend reading the books in order to get the most out of the story (plus the enjoyment factor-savor these books). Phillip the Duke is just a total narcissist. I mean go back to book 1. Don't get me started! What a plot and the twists and turns. Hugh and the Duchess make a wonderful couple that that I have to wait till Oct for the next book to read what happens with them.

Wait! A not only but also! This time Hugh is accused of murdering his mysterious half sister and Bow Street is after him. Of course Audrey is the one to find the body at a ton function, only then she didn’t know who the woman was. Hugh’s in hiding trying to solve the who dunnit and Audrey is beside herself trying to prove his innocence. Only things become murkier as someone keeps foiling her attempts. Young Sir is helping as much as he can. I can hardly wait for the final in the series.

Cara Devlin is a new author to me. I have devoured all of her books, one after another because they are so compelling. These books just keep getting better and better. The story in this book continues to build until the last few chapters where I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation.

This was a terrific story, with lots of action, plot twists, character development, and big secrets being revealed. I loved it. It’s my favorite of the books so far because it kept me guessing about the murderer, about Phillip, about Hugh and Audrey’s relationship. We find out a lot more about Hugh’s family history in this book and it’s a corker.

I was surprised at the plot twists, like Phillip’s plan. I enjoyed being surprised, and while I had an inkling about one of the developments, the other two big revelations at the end shocked me. How fun!

Seeing how close Hugh and Audrey have become is killing me. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of them. I wish I didn’t have to wait until October for the next book, where I hope we see some resolution for Hugh and Audrey.

My only complaint is that this impossible romance is taking a very long time to come to fruition. I don’t know how the author is going to manage it but I am getting really impatient to see a HEA for Hugh and Audrey.

I would like to express my gratitude to BookSiren for providing me with a free eARC. Please note that all thoughts and opinions shared in this review are solely my own.

In 'Penance for the Dead', author Ms Devlin takes us on another thrilling journey with Hugh, who finds himself entangled in a murder case where he becomes the prime suspect. This time around, the murder victim is his half-sister, whom he was accused of ruining many years ago. Who else but Audrey, the Duchess of Fournier who, uncovers the body? As the clock ticks, Hugh and Audrey must join forces to clear his name and uncover the truth.

One of the strongest aspects of this series is its ability to keep readers on their toes. Ms Devlin masterfully crafts a story that remains unpredictable throughout, leaving me eagerly turning the pages to uncover the next twist and turn. In particular, the revelation about Hugh's parentage was executed exceptionally well, adding an intriguing layer to the narrative and raising the stakes for both Hugh and Audrey. I applaud the author for taking unexpected turns, including the surprising outcome for Philip, Audrey's husband. These unexpected developments truly kept me engaged and invested in the story.

However, there is one minor quibble I have. While Audrey's paranormal abilities were a significant draw for me in the series, I feel that they are somewhat underutilised as the story progresses. The initial instalment showcased Audrey's abilities to a greater extent, and it would be a shame not to explore them more fully in subsequent books. I believe that further centralising Audrey's paranormal talents would elevate the overall narrative and add a unique and captivating element to the story.

A standout characteristic of this series is its slow-burn nature. The gradual development of the romantic elements between the characters, including the satisfying moment when they finally share a kiss, adds a delightful tension that enhances the overall reading experience.

In terms of pacing and writing style, the book maintains a strong flow, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the narrative effortlessly. The author's skillful storytelling and engaging prose contribute to the book's appeal, making it an enjoyable read from start to finish.

To summarise, "Penance for the Dead' is a gripping murder mystery infused with elements of the paranormal. The series continues to impress with its unpredictability and skilful storytelling. While Audrey's abilities could be further explored, the slow-burn romance and well-executed plot twists make for an entertaining experience. I highly recommend this book to fans of suspenseful mysteries with a touch of the supernatural.

Audrey and Hugh's 4th adventure together, with a deep look into his family's dark and secretive past. Really moving and well done. Did I want more Sir and Basil? - yes! Did I want more Hugh and Audrey together? - a thousand times yes! Did the culprit get his just deserts? - yes! But oh, the havoc and the many twists and turns in this story. It will keep you up reading at night to finish it, and then lying in bed afterward, thinking to yourself, what just happened and what comes next for these two complex yet wonderful main characters that I adore!

4.5 ⭐️ I am loving this series! ✨ I have no idea how Cara Devlin does it, but it’s definitely one of the best in the historical mystery genre with a romantic subplot that is chef’s kiss 💋😚

Centering around Hugh’s past, Penance for the Dead had me on the edge of my seat, and I was so intrigued to find out the truth of what happened in the Neatham household. (Let’s be honest, Hugh is too delicious to ever be a blackguard 😏)

I wholly expected to find out Hugh was innocent, but I didn’t expect the surprise twist?? That said, it was almost a *touch* predictable… we all know where this is going (and I can’t wait to see it 😍), but this outcome felt a little convenient. Not complaining though! 🤭

And the ROMANCE 🪭🥵 why is the tension here better than some of my open-door romance books? Ironically, I started this series because I had a taste for gas-lamp, foggy London, and my historical romances just weren’t hitting the spot. And look—I got an intriguing mystery series AND a delicious romance for my trouble. Yay!!

If there’s any drawback to this series, it’s Philip. From the beginning, his presence rankled 😠

The secrets he kept from Audrey, his past in opium dens, the way he did nothing to help his own murder case, the way he bosses her around and then NEGLECTS her—and then, one week with Freddie whatshisname, and he’s ready to upend their whole life??? I AM SO OVER HIM!

I was literally screaming at his selfishness! I hope he takes a long walk off a short bridge 😡

That aside, I’m so excited to see what’s next for Hugh and Audrey! 🩷

This one is stunning in how beautifully it is executed, with all the layers to the characters, the twists and turns in all its various subplots. I loved so much about it - so so so good! I will write more when my book hangover lets up. It is AMAZING!!

Here's my BookSirens review:

What can I say? I am still speechless a day after finishing my read of this book - it is so good! There is so much that goes on for both Hugh and Audrey individually and as a couple that continues to learn to love and trust each other. I am still processing what happened in the span of 260 pages and how the author will take these two complex, compelling characters whom I have grown to love on their next challenging excursion.

While Book 3 of the Bow Street Duchess series dealt with Audrey's past and her time in Shadewell, Book 4 - Penance for the Dead - deals with Hugh's early family life and sorts out what happened with his half-siblings that resulted in the maiming of the current Viscount Neatham, his brother, Barty, in a duel and Hugh's expulsion from the world of the ton, tarnished and blacklisted by his remaining family. It is a dark twisty, turning tale that keeps you wondering if what you suspect is true and how things will come together at the end for the resolution of this family crisis that kicks off with the murder of Hugh's younger half-sister, Eloisa, the one whom Hugh apparently ruined 6 years prior to the start of this novel. Not only does he have to solve who killed Eloisa, but he has to avoid being taken into custody as the prime suspect in her murder. Luckily, Hugh has allies in Audrey, Sir, Carrigan (Audrey's driver) and Lord Thornton, who help him evade the law as well as gather the necessary information to prove his innocence. That Hugh is innocent, there is never any doubt, but how Audrey helps rescue him from being sentenced to the gallows is almost as stirring as his backstory, and those who want Hugh and Audrey moving forward with their relationship will be rewarded with a few tender scenes that reveal how much these two have come to mean to each other.

There are so many good things to say about this book, but without giving away the details, suffice it to say that I could not put this book down until I had finished reading it. Could things have been better explained at some crucial points in the story? I think so, because I am left with a few unanswered questions, but all in all, this was a great read that I am tempted to reread, particularly before any additional books in the series come out. Hugh and Audrey still need their happily ever after, and Philip - well, Philip needs to set her free and not be such a selfish cad. I can't wait to see what the next book brings to their story when it comes out next fall.

As an aside - do heed the warnings for this tale if you're sensitive to the seamier side of life: there is some abuse and violent death.

Thanks to BookSirens and the author for providing me with this free eARC; I could not wait until early June for its release. This is my honest review of Penance of the Dead, and all thoughts expressed herein are my own.

I’m writing for the first time after a reread. I must have been so affected back in June that I couldn’t summarize my feelings. Now in December, I’ve reread the series and think this is the most satisfying of books despite there being a huge, unresolved piece of the story.

Even though Audrey and Hugh can’t publicly be together in this story, they manage to find a lot of stolen moments. Hugh’s backstory is completely explored and resolved. We get to see more of Basil and Sir, who are charming frenemies.

Philip’s selfishness comes out in full force, but he has yet to have his comeuppance.

Thank goodness I have book five to read again immediately.

This is a new author for me. I just finished book 1 thru 3 and it was so intriguing and so damn good. I was surprised how much depth she got in the story. The funny thing is all the books I read have sex in them and I researched her and thought she had sex in her books but so far, nothing. Still such a great read it really didn't matter.

I usually read light ton stories but I do have a few authors that have a bit more intrigue and daring. But this series is really suspenseful with murder and secrets. So unusual for me. I have never read a series like this. Not just so heavy with the suspense and intrigue but it's the same main characters across the whole series. Like I said about book 1 thru 3, it doesn't really end in a cliffhanger, but you just know there is more to come from Audrey and Hugh. Y'all this series is getting crazy good! :)

On to Book 5.

The fourth installment in The Bow Street Duchess series was an entertaining and intriguing historical mystery full of decades old family secrets, unfathomable indiscretions and betrayal. Once again, Audrey Sinclair, Duchess of Fournier and Principal Officer Hugh Marsden work together to find a murderer. The romantic sparks between The Duchess and Hugh continue, however there’s an unexpected change in personal circumstances that could significantly impact their relationship.

Audrey and Hugh had no choice but to solve the murder of one of his family members. This murder mystery had more twists and turns than an Auntie Anne’s pretzel. There were so many surprises. So much was revealed about Hugh’s past. It was a game changer for both of them. And, of course, they solved the murder mystery in their signature over-the-top super messy way. Loved every page. Highly recommend.

If I wore a wig it'd be snatched after reading this. Devlin ate and left no crumbs!

This series has to be continuous because in the ending you just to want to go to the store and buy the next one immediately. The transitions and different POVs are managed so well and aren't the least bit confusing. The characters are chef's kiss.

THRILLING AND SCANDALOUSLY Good!

Wow. I'd love to give some details about the plot, but suffice it to say this book takes on one of the certain elements of Hugh's life and turns it upside down. In a way this parallels the upheaval that Audrey experiences at the end of the last book, and now these two characters stand at the threshold of something that neither could have ever imagined. Again, wow. 5 stars.

Definitely my favorite so far! I absolutely flew through this and am already antsy to start the next book.

While realism wasn't something that the author has seemed super concerned with in this series, the mystery in this one was probably the least realistic so far. That didn't bother me at all, especially since the reveal and everything like that held together pretty well, but I can see it annoying some readers. There were so many clues littered throughout the book though, so even the more outrageous elements of the plot felt grounded in the internal reality of the book.

We finally got some proper relationship progress in this book and I was very much here for it. The tension and the angst were so good. I've mentioned this in all my reviews, but I'm so happy the author decided to delay them getting together.

On a related note, Phillip was on my last nerve for the entirety of this book and I can't wait to see the last of him. He is so selfish and inconsiderate! I got that vibe in the other books, so at least it was well set up, but oh my god was he insufferable. I have a lot of empathy for him and his situation, but that can only go so far.

Is it past midnight? Yes. Will I still be starting book #5? Also yes :)

Series: Bow Street Duchess Mystery #4
Publication Date: 6/3/23
Period: Regency London
Number of Pages: 238

I have been totally smitten by this author’s virtuoso performance in creating mysteries that perplex and characters that endear. Each book in the series has provided us with a pulse-pounding fast-paced mystery and a further look at the slow-burn romance between Audrey and Hugh. How smitten am I? Well, I’m still reading the series even though I have very strong feelings about adultery no matter the reasons behind it.

We’ve met – and not loved – Hugh’s estranged, dysfunctional family. In this book, we are dealing with them directly because Hugh’s half-sister has been murdered – and Hugh is the accused. Well, WE all know Hugh didn’t do it – and Hugh’s close friends know he didn’t do it – but Bow Street is another matter. They are looking for him everywhere. Can he keep out of their clutches and find his sister’s murderer – and also track down the truth of the story she told him shortly before she was murdered?

Audrey, Duchess of Fournier, and her husband Philip, discovered the body of Hugh’s sister Eloisa just after her death. When Audrey learns Hugh is being sought for the murder, she knows she has to help him. She also knows Bow Street will be watching her every move because of her friendship with Hugh. How can she escape them and find Hugh? How can she help him? Can she solve it on her own?

You’ll be holding your breath throughout the fast-paced, spine-tingling tale that has plot twists that spin the whole narrative on its head. Audrey and Hugh must work together to thwart Bow Street, find a murderer, and untangle a web of lies and deceit that has been almost 30 years in the making.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and this series. By the way – I highly recommend you read the series in order to get the full feel for Audrey, Hugh, Philip, Sir, and Audrey’s secret that she must keep hidden from the world. However, as much as I’m loving it – I’m also questioning where it is going. I have strong feelings about infidelity of any sort, for any reason, and in my view, Hugh and Audrey are just there – right on the edge. So, how is this author going to manage to deal with the duke in a way that will allow Hugh and Audrey to have a true HEA? The duke makes a suggestion in this book – but, for me it wouldn’t work. Neither would him dying because that would hurt Audrey. So, I’m anxious to see what is going to happen in the next book.

Anyway – this is a finely told tale and I hope you will love reading it!

I absolutely LOVE this series. I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across the first book, “Murder at the Seven Dials” as a Kindle recommendation. I was skeptical after having read a couple of similar recommendations that were not very good but decided to give it a go anyway and I’m so glad I did. I find Cara Devlin to be an excellent story teller. She can weave a gripping tale with twists and turns leaving you unsure how it is going to end until she decides to tell you. I often figure out the ending of a book in advance as I’m sure many others do, so this was quite a treat for me. Her clue placement is subtle but solid so don’t forget to pay attention! This book flows so well, it is seamless.

The characters are compelling and likeable (except for the bad guys, and for the last couple of books Phillip who I’ve found quite off putting due to his self-absorption but I’m sure that’s intentional) and you cannot help but become invested in what is going to happen to them. They deepen throughout the series particularly Audrey and Hugh of course, but you also get to know the supporting characters like Greer, Basil, Thornton, and Sir better and care what happens with them too (when is Hugh going to confront Sir’s father?!).

The ‘slow burn’ romance is truly slow burn, but she manages to judiciously ‘turn up the heat’ with each book and whereas in the first couple of books I thought there was no way there might be a happy ever after for Audrey and Hugh, I’m so excited after finishing “Penance for the Dead”, that there just might be! How will Cara Devlin accomplish this while allowing everyone to maintain their honor and social standing? I don’t know but I am confident the author will find an ingenious way to accomplish it and I can’t wait to read all about it.

I’m a little depressed that I have to wait for book 5 (there better be one!) but I take comfort in looking at the publishing dates that Cara Devlin is fairly prolific and am hoping I shan’t have to wait too long for the next installment.

After I write this, I’m going in search of her other series as I’m sure they will be just as engrossing 😊

READ THIS SERIES AND ENJOY!!!!!

The Saga continues
So many secrets are finally revealed in book 4 of the Bow Street Duchess Mystery Series. Audrey and Hugh find themselves running in so many directions in order to prove his innocence of a crime committed at a local soirée. Though working to solve the same crime, the underlying secrets cause strife and confusion. All comes to light, as well as, so many changes in the life of our Bow Street officer and Audrey and Phillips’s lives. Continue reading to learn all that has been a mystery in past books. Audrey’s bravery and audacity for seeking out the truth can only be matched by Thornton, the Magistrate, and Sir all working to clear the good name of Hugh. In this book Philip drops his own bombshell, leaving Audrey to determine how she can be with the one she loves. Curl up, take all the time you need and travel back in time to London.

I am enjoying this series!
This book sees some changes (No spoilers!) for our characters.
We delve into Hugh's background as to why he's been ostracized by the ton.
My only reason for relieving this book of its full 5 stars is that Audrey doesn't use her psychic ability very much in this book and that's too bad, I rather like this aspect of the series. It's not too deep into fantasy to make it fantastical, like werewolves and crap like that, so I like it. Heck, some people claim they see colours when they touch things so why not?
Anyway, I am waiting with bated breath for October for the 5th book. Which reminds me, you can pre-order it and it will show up on your Kindle. I don't have a Kindle--I use an iPad Kindle app and that works just as well. JUST FYI! :D

Another successful book by this author. I really enjoyed the mystery that started after a death of a woman at a ball. Cassie has returned from her time spent to cover up her foolish mistake. Her brother and his wife are doing all they can to protect her from gossip. Them finding another body doesn’t help the situation . Besides that Audrey tries to stay away from Hugh the Bow street murder investigator, until he is wanted for her murder. She was his step sister growing up. Audrey and her staff loyal to her also want to help. The rumor that Hugh may be the actual heir only leads to more deaths. It is suspenseful, fast paced, and has some cussing. There are kisses, and her husband meets an old love. I gave it five stars. I love this series.

These two are going to kill me. I swear. All this angsty longing.

This series is one that just keeps giving. Each book has been an evolution of plot and character. Even though the mysteries aren't super hard to deduce, they still feel well done and well concluded. There aren't loose ends or questions left unanswere. The last book took us into Audrey's past, and now, this book takes us to Hugh's, which is even more scandalous and salacious. The author has opened up a few avenues of possibilities for a future for our Duchess and Bow Street Runner, we'll just have to see how she decides to proceed.

4 stars.

Again, Audrey came across a murder victim at a ball, who turned out to be Hugh's half-sister. Hugh becomes the main suspect after he was seen fighting with his half-brother the night before.

As Audrey delves deeper into Hugh's family history, some long-lost secrets are revealed. These secrets simultaneously provided an alternative history of his birth and at the same time, eliminated the class difference between Audrey and Hugh. The whole thing was quite neatly done.

The author even provided a solution to their main obstacle, Audrey's ducal husband. But I'm not sure I like that solution and am hoping for something else. I'm keen to see where they go from here.

My review is to follow but holy EFF BALLS!!!! Cara just gets better and better and honestly, I don’t know if any mystery romance book I ever read after, will hold up to this series.

I just want to say I hate Philip!!!!!

I got this book as an ARC for an honest opinion but let’s face it, I’m one of Cara’s biggest fan girls.

I will write more in depth soon.

I rarely ever give 5 star reviews, ever. This is a 5 Star Story, I highly recommend that you read the previous books in this series in order to fully grasp how important this book is. Audrey, the Duchess, and Hugh Marsden, handsome Bow Street Runner are my favorite sleuths in literature today. A soiree turns into a murder scene, and the corpse is too close to Hugh, the death will set off a cataclysmic set of events, where nothing will be the same. I love this series, I love Audrey and Hugh, this is the best story that I have read this year.

I highly recommend it. Thank you #CaraDevlin #BookSirens

Secrets of illegitimacy

These mysteries keep getting better and better. This novel focuses on the mysteries surrounding the Neatham family…a family in which Hugh was raised by his mother, Catherine Marsden. Years have passed since Hugh’s falling out with the family, after he was accused of “ruining” his half sister, Eloisa. Eloisa was supposedly delegated to Paris after the scandal, but, to everyone’s surprise, she is in London attending a ball…when she is murdered. Of course, our amateur sleuth, the duchess, is in attendance. Since Hugh had a row with his half brother, Bartholomew, he was accused of Eloisa’s murder.
What is the focus of this novel? 1) Who murdered Eloisa and why? 2) Who is Hugh’s real mother? Who really ruined Eloisa? 3) Who is the gentleman that has garnered Phillip’s (Audrey’s husband, the duke) interest? 4) Whose lives are in danger? There are so many unanswered questions in this book, that it will make readers’ heads spin. Thankfully, they will all be answered. The only thing that I will say is that, there are 6 people whose legitimacy is in question, and only one is legitimate. Read this fast paced, action packed Book 4. It is fabulous. I’ve already read Book 5, now I’m on to 6. This is a least a 5 star 🌟 read.

CW: Murder; incest; death; gun violence; abandonment; forced institutionalization

I don’t know how Cara Devlin does it, but she somehow raises the stakes in each book of the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series. If Silence of Deceit dug up Audrey’s ghosts, Penance for the Dead does the same for Hugh’s. And what a wild, delicious ride this is as the murder of Hugh’s half-sister brings to light family secrets that were long buried.

OH MY GOD THE ROMANCE! Four books in, and we finally, FINALLY, get some significant movement. I was literally screaming with excitement as it felt like things had been building to this moment for a while, and it was so delicious and perfect! The tension and angst are still there, but we also get the emotional tenderness that I adore. Audrey and Hugh care for each other so much, and the love they have for each other is expressed so beautifully in every way, except through words at the point. Those quiet little moments – a tender hug, a subtle caress of a hand, a kiss of palm – speak volumes. Given the nature of this mystery, Hugh and Audrey are also often forced together in private, just the two of them alone, and the story leads to a beautiful progression of their relationship.

Like all the other books in this series, I loved how complex and layered the mysteries are. One thing that felt different about this book was it wasn’t just a murder mystery but a mystery so deeply entwined with Hugh’s family and his birth. I loved the complicated family and societal dynamics that came into play in this book, as there were a lot of different secrets to uncover and threads to untangle. Unlike with the other books, I did predict the murderer fairly quickly, but the other dimensions of the mystery are what kept me on edge. I did love the use of the dual timelines in the beginning, with Hugh and Audrey’s POV meeting and converging. That really helped to up the stakes and the tension in the beginning. Also, as an avid Veronica Speedwell series fan, this mystery felt very adjacent to A Curious Beginning, and I LOVED that.

Hugh’s put in a very complicated position in this book as everyone thinks he murdered his half-sister. Hugh’s always had a very complicated relationship with his family, and society has always thought the worst of Hugh after a duel with his brother, Lord Neatham, over a scandal involving his half-sister. No one knows the truth of what caused that duel, but it finally comes to light in this book, and man, I admire Hugh’s restraint in that situation! Hugh’s whole world gets flipped upside down in this book as he’s forced to confront some very difficult realities. All things considered, he handles all the revelations incredibly well, even though he wants nothing to do with the new position it puts him in. And wow, what a messed up family he comes from!

Meanwhile, Audrey finally gets to step into the role of lead investigator in this book since Hugh’s been relegated to the sidelines as the main suspect. I also loved that she finally gets the recognition she deserves for her investigation prowess in this book – it’s about time! Audrey has a tiny circle of people she cares about, but when something happens to them, she’ll do anything and everything to protect them. Audrey’s fiercely loyal in that regard and cannot stand idly by the sidelines. She cares deeply, and I loved watching her express her feelings for Hugh via her actions. Even when it comes to Philip, she still cares deeply for him, even if he hurts her with his actions.

Speaking of Philip, I have so many feelings about this man. I was cursing him out at one point, even if he was also giving Audrey an option that I wanted her to have. While they don’t love each other romantically, they still have love as friends. I hurt for Audrey as it was sad to see their relationship reach the stage it has.

Now, the ending of this book feels like we’re at a significant turning point in the series. So many things have changed! Hugh and Audrey’s relationship feels like it’s at a completely different stage, and circumstances in their life may be right for them to be together soon. However, Devlin is such a tease as there is still much yet to explore, and the ending still leaves things open. I was so sad that the next book wasn’t out yet, as I NEEDED to know what happened next after the end of this one!

I’m fully OBSESSED with the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series. Cara Devlin has written such a captivating historical mystery series with the perfect air of the supernatural that contains richly nuanced characters and a gorgeous romance. I have loved every book in the series, and I hope you will, too! Definitely pick this up if you’re a fan of book series like Veronica Speedwell or Lady Sherlock or shows like Miss Scarlet and the Duke.
