A New Player

While Punchline is still occupied with assembling a functioning team a new player arrives on the field: Black Mask. The well-known villain has gathered a conglomerate of supporters e.g. Scar-Face to support him in the drug business. The Clown princess is certain she'll prevail against her new competitioner but that's up to hard test... The story does a lot things right. Especially the return of Black Mask and Scar-Face really entertains me. They're portraited exactly the way I expect them to be. I also enjoy the setup of a no-limits conflict within the streets of Gotham. Art style is strong as usual. You can't go wrong here HOWEVER the whole story itself doesn't catch me. I don't see where we are going here in the long-term picture. What's the point? Why should I care if Punchline or Black Mask wins? Let's hope the further issues deliver something more detailed. 3/5

I was kind of digging issues one and two. But three and four, not so much. I'm not totally sure I'll bother with issues five and six.

I might for completeness sake, but these two really fall off hard. You come in to issue three felling like you've missed some major events, because you have unless you read Catwoman issue 50. It's bad enough having unrelated tie ins with major events, but this isn't that, this is a mini series. And while I was kind of into Blue Bird in Trial of Alexis Kaye, here she's a lot less cool. I was ok with some gay romance subplot lines for Cullen (BB's little brother) but now Tini Howard is starting to push it with some feminist garbage as well.

Book four leave off on a bit of a cliff hanger, and I'm kind of curious what it is. I can tell you, something is about to happen, but I don't know what, and I can't tell you why without spoilers. Wanting to know that, and with mini series that are easy to collect, I'd like to get the whole thing. On the other hand, I don't want to reward propagandizing and that's what his is starting to devolve into.

Here is a tip Howard, gangsters and killers are not bad people because they are sexist, they are bad people because they are bad. In another era, from another writer I could accept the sexism as a ploy, as characters trying to manipulate and play off other characters. But here and now with this writer, it's feeling less like evil characters being clever and the writer thinking about going into a full on scree and starting to lecture me.

This series is just not working for me, which is super sad, because I loved Punchline: The Trial of Alexis Kaye and think Punchline could be a really cool character when done right. Which isn't happening here, unfortunately. The story feels rather disjointed (because of the random tie-in with Catwoman, which I haven't read) and just kind of all over the place.

It also keeps introducing more characters but never develops them. They feel like fillers just there to have people, but nothing happens with them, unfortunately.

Whereas I felt issue 3 dropped, I felt this one brought it back up, though perhaps thats my bias to seeing Arthur because I love that dumb silly lil man. However more importantly WHY DID THEY DRAW KING WITH THAT THOUSAND YARD STARE AT USSSS

3.5. Needed more Punchline in the Punchline book? Not sure where it’s going but let’s hope it gets there soon.

I really wanted her to not be put against Batman so I enjoy the direction so far
