Highland Adventure #2

My Wild Highlander

Rate this book
Lady Angelique Drummagan, a half-Scottish, half-French countess, has suffered much pain and betrayal in her past. She wants nothing to do with the sensual Scottish warrior that the king has ordered her to marry because the rogue could never be a faithful husband, but she has little choice in the matter. Dangerous, greedy enemies threaten her from all sides and she’s in dire need of his protection. Sir Lachlan MacGrath, known as Seducer of the Highlands, possesses a charming wickedness and canny wit which has earned him much popularity. After the king decrees that he wed the fiery hellion in an arranged marriage, Lachlan discovers there is one woman who can resist him—Angelique. Can he break through her icy façade and melt her heart, or will the dark secrets lurking in her past not only cost them their future together, but their very lives? National Readers' Choice Award Winner "My Wild Highlander was a great read." 5 Stars, Top Pick, Night Owl Reviews "This author truly is a master of the written word and I look forward to reading her work for many years to come." Kindle Reader After taking another corner too quickly, the coach drew to an abrupt halt and the door opened. Lachlan now held a torch aloft. "Come, both of you. Hold this." He handed the torch to Rebbinglen. "Where are we going?" Angelique asked. "No time for questions now." He motioned her forward. Again, he lifted Angelique into his arms and carried her across an alley as if she weighed no more than an infant. Amid the chaos, he seemed an island of strength and protection. She was finding, of a sudden, that she liked this feeling. She had not experienced true safety for a long time. And besides, he smelled appealing, like clean male blended with leather. In the torchlight, their gazes mingled for a moment. He was not the seductive charmer now. No twinkle of humor danced in his eyes, no smirk upon his lips. He'd transformed into a formidable warrior with a firm mouth and dark, indomitable eyes—a side of him she'd never fully seen. They slipped through a narrow doorway, Dirk carrying Camille behind them. "What is this place?" The scents of tallow and musty books irritated her nose. The passage opened up and they moved through a large dim church filled with empty pews. Only a couple of candles lit the plain interior. Five of King James's retainers wearing royal livery waited near the pulpit along with a dour Protestant minister. "What is happening?" Angelique asked. "We are to be married, as you ken." Lachlan set her on her feet at the front of the church. She pulled him aside. "Have you lost your mind? We cannot marry now. Not like this," she whispered loudly. "Aye, 'tis necessary to marry in secret. Someone wishes to kill us. They are wanting your estate through any means, fair or foul." His harsh expression told her of the seriousness of the matter. "King James bid us to go ahead and marry. Now. We have the special license." "But I must wear my wedding gown and I did not bring it. I will not marry in my shift and a blanket. Barefoot." "No time." Lachlan dragged her before the minister. "Please begin." This is the sequel to My Fierce Highlander, and I loved it just as much. I can’t tell you how much I loved our hero Lachlan. He was the younger, untitled brother of Alasdair-chief of clan MacGrath and hero of the last book. But Lachlan is told he will never amount to anything by their father, so he sets about proving him right. Lachlan is a man whore--a different woman each night, you know the type. The heroine Angelique catches him! So her first meeting of Lachlan is while he’s with Lady Eleanor, but she remembers seeing him with a different lady the night before, and she knows of his reputation. Let’s just say that she doesn’t take it well when she is gently forced by the king to marry Lachlan.

Her lands might be hers, but her people don’t trust either Lady Angelique or her new husband, their new chief, Lachlan. I liked how Lachlan earned their trust, and dealt with those who betrayed that newfound trust. I hated how Lady Angelique couldn’t understand that there were some things she wouldn’t be involved in. She was a woman, she was not the laird. Yet she would get so angry with Lachlan for doing things that involved her clan, without including her. I understand her fears and insecurities, in fact I think they were very well-developed and any woman could understand them. But it still drove me crazy.

Lachlan was a great character and a fantastic hero. I liked that he changed to a single-woman-man, because it was believable. Not being attracted to other women confused him. He was so befuddled as to why he only wanted his wife, and it was so fun to watch him fall in love with her. Once he realized why he didn’t want other women, he really worked hard to gain Angelique’s trust, and her faith in him. I found myself really enjoying the story. Once I passed a certain turning point for Angelique, the plot really picked up, and I found myself reading as fast as I could to find out what would happen next. A certain hare-brained scheme cooked up by the menfolk really rubbed me the wrong way, but to them the ends justified the means. This book was a great follow-up to My Fierce Highlander, and it really made me want more. In fact, I want Dirk’s story now. Like ASAP.

*One thing I’d like to mention is that I suggested this book and the previous one to someone, and her response was that she didn’t read self-published authors. Well, I had no idea this author was self-pubb’d! This book is just that good. If I ever go that route, I want her for my critique partner and I want her editor. I highly recommend Vonda Sinclair’s Highlander books.

**Thank you to the author for the review copy

Vonda does it again with an excellent fast pace story. I was really hesitant in reading this one because as most of you know I don’t get along with historical heroes that are in every woman’s skirt, but… this story was nothing like I though it would be and it wasn’t long before I fell for Lachlan and all of his charm, he is a true highlander hero. This is a story with twist and turns and a great romance between two that are nothing alike.

People can change from their ways, right? Well, you have to read this one and find out how one lady name Angelique changed a rakes ways. The catch is who really changed who. Yep, there is somewhat of a twist to this story if you read the fine lines.

The romance between Lachlan and Angelique is stressful at times and at times it’s so hot your fanning yourself. I loved seeing them grow together as the story grew.

I recommend this story for any historical highlander romance reader to try.

I'd have given this more stars, but the heroine drove me absolutely insane. No matter what the poor hero did or said, she always thought the worst of him. Even when others vouched for him, she wouldnt believe him. I loved the hero, and honestly, I think he deserved someone better. It wasn't until the last chapter that she finally believed he wasn't a horrible person. I dunno, maybe some of you wont find it as annoying as I did. There are plenty of good reviews, so if highland romances are your thing, then it's worth a shot. I'm going to give this series one more try, and if it doesnt get better then I'm returning the lot, since I doubt I'll ever want to read them again.

Another fantastic Scottish romance with lots of action, great characters, well done love scenes, bad villains, really good story line and a HEA ending.

Can't wait for the next book in this series to come out.

My Wild Highlander by Vonda Sinclair is the second book in the Highland Adventure series. Angelique is the ward of King James and he has decided to marry her off to a Scotsman with a reputation with the ladies–which she herself has witnessed. She will not give in to this man easily. Lachlan has saved the King’s favorite and now gets a reward and that is Lady Angelique. She is the heir to a clan in Scotland, but there are others who want it for themselves. Little does Lachlan know that Angelique has a difficult past, one that she isn’t too keen on revealing. She is in danger from all around her and while she isn’t too fond of Lachlan, he knows he must protect her.

I absolutely loved the first book in the series, My Fierce Highlander, and have been dying to dive more into this series. These books are on the steamy side. This book also does contain instances of rape and abuse so just a warning for readers. I appreciated that the author showed the terror and pain behind sexual assault but I think handled it wrong in regards to her future relationships. At one point, Lachlan ties her up to show her how love is supposed to be and she was very much against it. Granted, he was not aware that she was raped before she knew him but he still should have respected her wishes and realized that something was wrong. That felt like it did more damage than helped her. However, besides that one scene, I thought the book was fine.

I do love the enemies to lovers trope. I saw a lot of reviews that complained about how she took so long to trust Lachlan and I am sitting here like… “how is that surprising?” I am glad she didn’t give in right away, she has every right to be skeptical of him. I do have to say, the MVP of this story is her friend, Camille. Angelique wouldn’t have made it very far without her and I really hope Camille gets her own story!

With danger around every corner, this book does keep at a very fast pace! While this isn’t my favorite in the series so far, I can’t wait to see what happens next. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars!

This book is filled with suspense, villainy and treachery. The characters are well developed and the story is fast-paced.

Lady Angelique Drummagan is half French and half Scot and she has a very poor opinion of men because her mother taught her that they can never be faithful. However, her father has passed away and she is his actual heir because they hold a title that can pass through the female line as well as the male.

Sir Lachlan MacGrath has served his king well and the king wants to reward him appropriately. The king knows that Angelique will be unable to lead the clan because she is female and French - not to mention that there is a male relative who has every intention of usurping the clan Lairdship for himself. So, the king orders Lachlan and Angelique to wed.

The action starts from there and goes through to the end of the book. You'll enjoy watching Lachlan and Angelique grow to care for one another and defeat the bad guys at the same time!

There were parts of the story where I was just scratching my head wondering "Why did she even mention that"? I wanted to smack Angelique because her grudge was beyond rediculous. She couldn't see past her own situation. Her behavior was a but odd for that time period. She was a little too headstrong to the point of being annoying. I enjoyed the story but found myself rolling my eyes almost everytime Angelique opened her mouth.

audiobook note: I didn't like the little echo they added in to denote internal dialog and there were LOTS of internal dialog.

Written by someone who's obviously never been sexually assaulted.

In reference to the second wedding night ..

Forcibly tying her up and subjecting her to sexual stimuli until her body responds against her will is not a cure for the emotional and mental damage of having previously been violated.

In fact it is considered by many as date rape.

Repeating acts such as this could condition her to always associate pain , violence, violation , loss of will and hopeless with sexual stimuli.

In short raping someone is not a cure for it...

I couldn't continue because the awful h, so arrogant, stupid and not pleasant at all. Here internal thoughts and descriptions were revolting. She's a spoiled and rude brat and I couldn't understand why the H or I would waste our time on her. I persisted until 57% but after she had declined his offer to bed her, again and again, then when she steals into his bed in the night, and has her way with him, she decides she might be in love with him because she 'relished' his love making? Then decides he won't be faithful, in spite of him saying he will. It just went on and on until I couldn't go on. I'd be unfaithful to her, just because she annoyed me.

I received this book from the author for a fair review.

This book was so FABULOUS! The characters were truly believable. I read the first book and truly loved Alasdair, but I think Lachlan is, by far, my favorite brother now. He is a good guy, a very handsome man and a strong leader. He wins the hand of Lady Angelique from King James. Lady Angelique is a very, very strong female lead. She can hold her own in a fight, make great decisions, and she has a sweet heart. Bad things have happened to her in her past, and it makes trusting Lachlan hard. Throughout the book, the author makes sure you fall in love with the characters as they fall in love with each other. Being new chiefs of their Lairddom, Angelique and Lachlan have to fight off people that want their home, people that want them for lustful purposes, and sketchy one-armed French men. I enjoyed this story. This book is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. I highly suggest that if you are looking for a historical Scottish romance novel, you make this your next choice.

Sizzling & Seductive!

What an awesome sizzling and seductive read. Wild Highlander doesn’t even describe this good ole fashion rogue “Sir Lachlan MacGrath”, no he is definitely the master of charming wickedness. He is the perfect sexy rogue that every lass at court wants a taste of except for one Lady Angelique Drummagan.

Their story is a spit fire feisty electrifying battle when thrown into a marriage set by the King that neither one of them wanted or planned but no one dare goes against the Kings wishes.

The arranged marriage unfolds lots of unimaginable drama that the characters over come. Revenge is always bitter sweet and it always said that the past always comes back to haunt you. In this story Lady Angelique struggles to accept the reality that all men are not the same and that she must face her fear of doing her duty required in bed trusting she will not get raped again like in her past.

Sir Lachlan struggles himself trying to figure out why this beautiful lass is fighting his advances of seduction. He has never been denied and cannot understand how anyone could not enjoy the pleasures he can offer. But once he finds the truth behind her guarded heart he becomes even more determined to protect and cherish her mind, body, and soul. Warning though, the erotic scenes not just sizzle, no they seduce your own arousal - LOL.

Overall the chemistry is electrifying between all the characters and the humor along with the actions of danger kept me glued to the pages and wishing I could actually live among them in their time to experience their folly. The ending climaxes perfectly and I have to say I love how the author reunites the MacGrath’s family into the story for support. It was so neat to hear and see Lady Gwyneth and Laird Alasdair from the first installment of this series.

The author has a talent of writing a smooth fast paced mind boggling story and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Great Read!

This was a really solid story; much better than book 1. The story kept me engaged; there was plenty of drama and buildup and some pretty steamy s*x scenes too. Action for days! We know who the evil folks are but trying to figure out their next move was the key.

Lachlan was amazing. True he was a ladies man before being married but once he married he was faithful. He felt the need to constantly prove himself for a certain shrewish half Scottish/French wench.

Insert Angelique--I despised this woman. I understand why she had such a hard time trusting but she was so mean and hateful, I found it hard to have any sympathy for her. She constantly doubted Lachlan -- she insulted his honor and in some aspects demeaned his manhood. She ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS thought the worst of him. I can't even count how many times I wanted to strangle her. She didn't even try to redeem herself.

The secondary characters were great, I especially loved Camille, Dirk and Robbie (or was it Rabbie? I had a hard time understanding the narrator).

The narrator was not great but better than before; so glad he's not narrating the next books.

Story 4 (would have been a 5 if not for the SHREW)
Narration 2.5 - 3

This was a fun read, I really enjoyed it.
The Heroine of the story Angelique, Scottish & French countess and the Hero Lachlan, a Scottish rogue, are ordered by the king to marry. They except, Lachlan because he receives the title of a Earl, all her lands and possessions and she is quite beautiful, Angelique because she believes the marriage will be in name only.
As the story progress' Lachlan has to work his magic on Angelique, and we find who is falling under who's spell.
I loved the banter between are two heroes, and the secondary characters.
I great story with wonderful characters.

This is an OK Highlander romance, but I did have some issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.

Lachlan was likable enough, but it bothered me that he had always been such a terrible womanizer. Because of his history, which was common knowledge, I understood why Angelique assumed he would not be faithful to her. Most women, especially one who knew he didn't really want to marry her, would have assumed that.

Angelique was OK, but it bothered me that she treated Lachlan so badly. She should have at least given him a chance to prove himself before deciding he could not be trusted. I get that she had a good reason to mistrust men, but pre-judging him based on her painful past was unfair.

I liked that Lachlan and his friends willingly risked their lives a number of times to protect Angelique. His willingness to do that is actually one of the things I liked most about him.

It bothered me that the bad guys in this story were just so thoroughly evil. They had absolutely no redeeming qualities at all -- they were just awful.

***** SPOILER FOLLOWS *****

There was one scene in the book that really bothered me. At one point, Lachlan tied Angelique up when he was seducing her. Her response was a little fear, but not much -- but then she responded with desire, just as he wanted. That was NOT realistic, because she was a rape victim. Most rape victims would be frantic with fear at being tied up. They would automatically assume that they were about to be raped again, and would be too terrified to even think about desire.

***** END OF SPOILER *****

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Sir Lachlan MacGrath has a reputation as a lusty seducer of women. He is a charmer who knows how to flatter women to get what he wants, and he has a reputation as being extremely inventive and skill full in bed.
But Lady Angelique Drummagan has been used and severely abused in her past and this young French beauty is not willing to fall prey to his charms, however handsome, dashing and muscular he is. His winning smile is not going to make her heart melt. She will not be seen as another conquest, even though they have just got married.
And yet on the battlefield, or when needed to lead his clan, Lachlan is fearsome, heroic and brave, he is a true Highlander Chief as he commands his new clan.
But plots, dark secrets and mistrust all threaten to interfere with true loves path. This is a wonderfully entertaining book, gripping and enthralling in parts, humorous and emotional in other parts. I absolutely loved this book.
Vonda captures the era, she evokes the atmosphere of the time, her characters have depth, charisma and character and her words and writing conjure up a vividly exciting romantic adventure.

After the first book of the series, I had started reading this one with high hopes for the author to get better but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. She starts great but is not very great at finishing.
What is bothering me most about the author is that in her books heroes and/or heroines are so sex starved they do not care about a silly thing like they are in danger at the moment? They realize there is a traitor in the keep and do nothing? Just kiss each other and want to have sex? Any man worth to be a romance hero would have done something/anything after that scene. If cannot find the traitor; he would have at least seal the secret passage!
I can’t stand this much stupidity from heroes in any romance book; romantically they can be as dense as the author likes but about safety? I expect them to be alert and strong. Unfortunately I won’t be reading Ms. Sinclair again.

I have been dying to hear Lachlan's story since the first book.  He is such a charming and captivating character and there is so much more to him than I thought.  It was enjoyable discovering more about his character and watching him develop. The writing is amazing, the story and characters come alive on every page. The emotions are so real.  Angelique can be quite the jealous little shrew and jumps to conclusions but Lachlan seems to enjoy it.  Angelique was the perfect match for Lachlan. The story is action-packed, and full of passion, I absolutely loved it. If you enjoyed the first book, without a doubt you will love this one too!!

Angelique was born to a Scottish father and a French mother. They have both passed on, and King James promises Angelique to Lachlan McGrath, along with her father's estate. Lachlan saved a man close to the king, and is happy to receive a title and property, something he never thought he'd have, but he's not so sure about a wife. He's happy bedding a lot of women and not being tied down to one. Angelique is not happy with the arrangement at all, and makes Lachlan's life miserable. Angelique was not a likable character. There was too much going on in the story, too many bad guys, too many conniving women and just a lot of confusion!

I literally couldn’t put this book down I have read a lot of books about Highlanders and you always read about arranged marriages and at the time the only hope you have is that you’ll learn to like each other and live together do your duty, but this one had me from the beginning Hey Hylande or who everybody thought was worthless and a countess who’s been hurt so bad she didn’t think she could ever love again great story on how they come to love each other

I read this one right after reading My Fierce Highlander. (which I loved) I was so disappointed in this. I like the hero well enough but the heroine Angelique I just couldn't take. She never gave him the benefit of the doubt-always thinking and expecting the worst of him. It just got old after awhile. Also, it seemed for quite a bit of the book they were either having sex or she was mad at him. Did not enjoy this and it was so different from the first book that I loved.

Like most people, historical romance was my first love. I am a sucker for Highlanders. I read every one I can get my hands on. I picked this one up, not realizing is was book 2. I loved every minute of drama and intrigue. I also love when the proper lady realizes She is a bit wanton as well! This story was fantastic and I am now on my journey to devour all the books!

A Delightful Highland Adventure

I consider a book a success if I find myself reading it far into night, having lost track of time. Such is the case with My Wild Highlander. I enjoyed the pacing of this novel and the slow build of the relationship between Lachlan and Angelique. I like that Angelique, though traumatized by the past, is not a woman that sits by and waits to be rescued. The sex scenes are also well crafted and appropriate to the story.

Freebie. I've read worse, though it's the formula where a prickly woman is forced to marry, there are plenty of villains I couldn't figure out how they got away with shit, and for some reason, the "barbarian" (WTF, anyway?) is the gentlest, most honorable dude around. Happy ending and occasionally shocking lack of editing. *yawn*

Loved the story of Countess Angelique and Lachlan MacGrath. The characters and plot are well developed and entertaining. You will find suspense, betrayals and romance within the pages, and will fall in love with the highlanders. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Know your French!!

The story and main characters were exciting. But I was disappointed in the frequent use of French words. I have not had a foreign language, so I lost interest at times trying to figure out what the words might mean. Otherwise, I probably would have scored this 5 stars.

I’ve read worse

A true bodice ripper, but captivating. The plot isn’t very original and the story arc is a bit predictable, but the main characters are well developed. The steamy scenes were S. T. E. A. M. Y. And had me wishing for my own 17th century highlander.

A good “don’t have to think while reading” beach read.

for how shot this book is, there was just too much going on. It was choppy and the leading lady's flip flopping between strong and out of control angry was frustrating. Not my favorite Sinclair, but I liked the first book enough to give book three a try.
