They would, Jesus said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily. "What is Jesus worth to you?" This question posed on the front cover of David Platt's The Radical Question resonate volumes throughout the booklet. This powerful exploration f Christian living both in and outside of the United States delivers an inspiring display of scripture personified. Consider the scripture passage of Luke 18 where a rich ruler asked Jesus what he must do to be saved. Jesus replied, "Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother," verse 20, KJV. The wealthy ruler replied, "All these have I kept from my youth up." Then Jesus said to him, "Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me." When the ruler heard this he did not jump up and say, "Yes, Master! Whatever you'll have me to do, I'll do!" In fact, when he heard this, the scripture states that he was very sorrowful because he was very rich.
This booklet shares with the reader those who have said "yes" to the call. There are specific examples of where "great jobs" and "once-in a lifetime" opportunities were turned down for the sake of doing God's work. It causes one to think about those who are less fortunate in reality versus the abstract. Not just the hungry and those who are homeless, but those who are without the freedom to worship God--those who are subject to become martyrs. What are willing to sacrifice? Those of us who stand in firmly built air-conditioned homes, visit comfortable worship centers, and rest easy with lucrative bank accounts? What are we doing with what we have? If God were to place it on your heart to share some of it with a neighbor, the community shelter, or even foreign ministries ... what would you do? Could that new pool installation wait? Could that brand new TV wait? Better yet, could that weekly lunch or dinner out be sacrificed?
God blesses us to be a blessing. It is all for kingdom advancement. To whom much is given, much is required. When a person teeters on the edge of selfishness, they are on the brink of making those things idols. "For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God," verse 25.

Dr. David Platt, senior pastor of the Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama writes this short and powerful book as a wake up call...a reminder to so many of us Americans, that our call to Christ was not a call to the American Dream that we are often found pursuing...but a call to pursue Christ, which looks much different and will call us to make radically different choices than those that do follow the American Dream.
The question that Platt poses is this, "What is Jesus worth to you?". Jesus called us to love God and to love others as He loved us. Are we following that simple commandment? Does it show in our actions, our decisions? If we REALLY loved others...if we REALLY wanted to care for the poor, the lost, the people that Jesus seemed to attract and to go out of his way to spend time with...how different would our lives look?
"We take the Jesus of the Bible and begin twisting him into a version of Jesus that we are more comfortable with." Do you know do this? How often do you fit Him into your schedule, or fit Him into your plans rather than throwing yourself before Him and doing what He asks?
When Jesus called His disciples and then told them what they would face it wasn't a pretty picture by the world's standard. They would be beaten, chased, hated and killed. And while we see this in other areas of the world, Americans are blessed with little of this persecution due to our freedom of religion, have we lost the value associated with our faith because we currently don't have to struggle to have that freedom? The cost of non-discipleship is much higher than the cost of being a disciple, but it is not recognizable from a worldly point of view.
So, read this short book. Ask the difficult questions and find out how true your faith is...try to answer the question, "What is Jesus worth to you?".

The Radical Question: What Is Jesus Worth To You, written by pastor David Platt is designed to make today’s Christian take a good hard look at themselves and challenges them to answer this question. Using his first-hand experience of house churches in China and contrasts the differences of these pious believers with an American megachurch, which he took pastor-ship of within weeks of visiting China. In an attempt to bring to light, exactly what Christ expects of us when we choose to follow Him.
The audio book is narrated by Lloyd James. The narration is professionally done and the narrator has a soothing tone with interesting voice inflections, which keeps the pace of the story going. This audio book is approximately 50 minutes long, and can easily be listened to in one sitting.
I would recommend this book to every Christian, especially those getting a bit distracted by their stuff and a bit too comfortable with their “religion”. After listening to this audiobook, they just might realize that they aren’t doing as Christ commanded. He commanded us to leave behind everything: security, family, wealth, in order to follow Him. I wonder how they would answer the question: “What Is Jesus Worth To You?”

Really made me think "what is Jesus worth to me?" What am I sacrificing for Jesus? Has me considering how to change so that I am living a radical life for Jesus....radical based on the fact that we are so comfortable in our faith here in American. Radical because my faith looks so much like everyone else's...kind of boring, surface religion.
God truly spoke to me during the reading of this little book. Now I'm ready to go to the main book and let God move me even more.

Only 54 pages but it asks a very important question: What is Jesus Worth to You?" If you had to lose everything, would you do it?
I enjoyed this book as it reminded me of why I choose to follow Christ. This world can often distract from the what the real truths are as well as what is most important when all is said and done.

This is a short edition of the full book Radical. I reviewed Radical at http://www.mrshields.com/?p=1373
I think you should read the full book because there are nuances that do not get communicated in the short book. The short book could be an introduction, but because most of the book is cut from Radical I don't think many people will read both. They will read one or the other.

If you are comfortable just going to a church building once or twice a week and content to live out your life as millions of other American Christians, then don’t read this book. Once you do, serious conviction will follow. You’ll stare at the ceiling at 2am, crying over your Laodicean lifestyle. But if you really, truly desire to follow Jesus - AT ANY COST - read this book. It’ll kindle a flame inside of you and drive you to your knees.

Short & sweet. Needed this! I know as a believer I so often fall into living a comfortable “American dream” kind of life, & I needed this urgent reminder of what my true call is!
