On The Job is a book of short stories and verse by award-winning Australian author, Sandi Wallace. It features cops young and old, male and female, rookies and veterans, working in urban, suburban and rural settings and dealing with all manner of crimes. Each story is preceded by a stanza of verse which links to the story. Some of the stories have been published previously, while others, and the verse, are new.

In Busted, a young cop with a fitness passion uses both her brains and her physical abilities to solve a spate of daring robberies. In Impact, a traffic accident brings grief to many but also uncovers something darker. Hot Patrol sees a veteran desk jockey taking a rookie cop on the road on a quiet night, with an unpredictable outcome.

In Losing Heidi, a missing persons case takes twists and turns as the Homicide team works to nail their suspect. In Silk Versus Sierra, a city cop turned lone law enforcement of a rural town responds to a warehouse alarm and finds herself involved in a high-speed car chase. And in Who Killed Carly Telford, a veteran small-town cop on the eve of retirement is determined to solve a murder that has left the city experts baffled.

Wallace’s stories pay homage to those dedicated men and women who serve and safeguard the public as they patrol the thin blue line. There are triumphs and tragedies, there’s violence and drama and death, but also humour and even a hint of romance. The settings, the dialogue with its Aussie jargon and the characters place these stories firmly in twenty-first century Australia. Despite the brevity of these tales, Wallace convincingly renders cops who believe their work makes a positive difference to a community that is their first priority.

Readers unfamiliar with Wallace’s work will be pleased to know that there is also an excellent Australian crime series, the Georgie Harvey & John Franklin novels, to be savoured, excerpts of which are included at the end of these stories. Readers of that series will jump at the chance of a further taste of this talented author’s oeuvre as they await their next Georgie & John fix, Into The Fog. Excellent Aussie Crime fiction.

All I can say is brilliant. Sandi Wallace packs as much punch into her short crime stories as she does into her novels. There were chills, thrills and heartbreak in these very accurate and action packed insights into our boys and girls in blue. Her ability to offer her readers a complete reading experience is exceptional and her award winning stories leave you satisfied but wanting more. Sandi has certainly delivered another great read with this latest offering.

As ever with Sandi Wallace, each story in On The Job has the reader settling into a relationship of trust from the first paragraph, confident that the journey will satisfy. Wallace is a courageous writer, tackling the confronting and hard-hitting with sensitivity and depth of understanding. Her protagonists, the cops 'on the job', are sharply crafted and authentic. Wallace's storytelling draws the reader up close, experiencing the reactions of investigating officers as they solve crimes and bang to rights the perpetrators.

Little wonder the stories here have won awards. Wallace charms her readers with tales that not only grip, they present socially realistic worlds, especially of rural Australia. There can be no doubt the author has done her research. These are stories that linger, long after they are read, and after experiencing the works of Sandi Wallace I, for one, will never imagine rural Australia in quite the same way again. This collection does not disappoint.

Thank you Sandi Wallace and Goodreads for the opportunity to read On The Job. I found it to be a really easy read, with a number of short stories about the lives of police on the job. Each story was unique and interesting and ranged from amusing to disquieting. Wallace handled well situations where assumptions were made that turned out to be wrong (even though the criminal was caught), the crazy situations that police officers can find themselves in, the trauma they experience with accident victims and having to advise the next of kin etc. For me though the story that resonated the most was Impact where Wallace accurately expresses the reactions of those termed first responders to a road traffic incident as well as the impact on others involved in the incident, through no fault of their own. It is often forgotten how impacted an innocent person can be where there is serious injury or death as a result of a traffic accident, and how that impact can carry over into their personal life.

Highly recommended

A great read with a series of original plots, well written in Sandi Wallace's distinctive rural style. In On The Job Sandi humanizes our hard working police force and brings her characters to life in a variety of situations. The introductory verses added a pleasant touch.

Short Stories from a Different Perspective

I love short stories and I love the variety of genre and plots they offer. On The Job offers short stories all focusing on events managed by police officers on the job in Australia. These stories are full of quirks that officers face both from perpetrators and ordinary people and police offers as well.

The authors writing voice is very clear. She uses Australian jargon, whether or not we know exactly what is meant, and this adds a running flavor throughout the fast-paced stories. It’s as if one colloquial word sets the flavor of the action and attitude. The writing in these stories is direct, on target, with not a word wasted.

These are stories that bring understanding in the life of a police officer. There is, at times, as much heartache as there is reward. There is humor, daring, and sacrifice. Wallace’s ability to tell a short story, and make it a whole story, is some of the best I’ve read in a long time.

A collection of short, mostly award winning crime stories by an Australian author. The Australian wording adds to the authenticity of the characters, the crimes, and the police work. This is a quick, enjoyable read for the crime story reader. You are also given a taste of one of her novels. Careful, you may feel a great need to buy that book too.

this is an excellent collection of short crime fiction and poetry. The stories are well paced and beautifully crafted. The poetry is a surprise. I've never read crime poetry before but it works. At 131 pages it is not a long read but it is quality. there's humour there too, a little romance and some kick too, like a mule.
