It’s the 70s the way they were, and for Steve Wallace and Nancy Collins falling in love has been easy. However, staying in love might be a different story. Since their first kiss in CALL ME THE BREEZE, Breeze and the Rebelicious Fancy have been crazy about each other, and their love has continued to grow. But despite their growing feelings, Breeze and Fancy are as different as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Barry Manilow. Unfortunately, those differences could become a stumbling block for their budding romance. Their differences cause even their closest friends to doubt their love. Everyone, from Steve’s wild and crazy friends to Nancy’s fellow majorettes, remains skeptical that their love is real. From high school dances to their favorite parking spot, join one of 1970s favorite couple as they navigate the local teen scene, hoping to find common ground. And in the meantime, PROVE EVERYBODY WRONG!
Steve "Breeze" & Nancy So, I skipped book 2 when I realized it went back to Breeze's childhood and told how he came to be the "Breeze." I wasn't interested in the history, and I had enough knowledge of what he got up to with his friends "pre-Nancy" from book 1.
In this book, Breeze and Nancy continue to build their relationship and their feelings really develop. There is no big conflict. This is more a story of two teenagers figuring out who they are individually and what they need from each other as a couple. I think their biggest challenge is that their friends don't really respect their relationship because they are so different. Steve had a longstanding reputation as a playboy, and Nancy was known by everyone as a good girl. Many around them thought they would crash and burn quickly, but these two really put in the work to make sure that didn't happen.
I love that Nancy wasn't afraid to set boundaries in their relationship and tell Steve the truth. At the same time, he made her a priority and didn't keep the truth from her. This really came in handy when people challenged their relationship because they were able to confidently trust in each other. While there were some challenges and growing pains along the way, they figured it out because they knew the other was important to them.
I especially enjoyed how Breeze was quick to shut down all those girls. He had no problem telling anyone that Nancy was his girl and that he loved her. He didn't care if people teased him or what they offered, he made sure that everyone knew that Nancy was his one and only. I absolutely adore this character.
So, no, this book is no angsty drama filled with conflict and emotional damage. It's just a love story. It almost feels like reading someone's diary. I think this should be required reading for teenage couples.
I am looking forward to reading the next one, so I can keep up with these characters and their crazy friends.
BREEZE AND FANCY is far from a boring love story. This reader was amazed by what the main character was willing to do to be with his girlfriend. Don’t hold back on the laughter and tears evoked by various scenes. Hilarity and relatability—regardless of one’s age, location, etc.,.—are the norm! The end of this book left this reader anxious for another volume of the FREE BIRD FILES!
