Lessons in Unseelie Discipline

Why be a good witch when it's so fun to be wicked...

Did Sara accidentally cast a spell that “caressed” her dad's best friend? Maybe.

Does the infamously icy Professor Lorne Abel set her body alight? Definitely.

The stoic professor is hiding plenty of secrets, starting with the fact that he's no wizard. He's an Unseelie spy who revels in his culture’s dark pleasures and fantasies. And Sara's bratty side awakens this pleasure dom's need to tease and taunt. But the curvy witch is half his age and there is a line he refuses to cross.

Too bad Lorne’s threats only pique Sara’s infamously insatiable curiosity.

When she throws herself into blatant danger, the Unseelie teaches her a valuable lesson that leaves her begging for more. Soon they're forced to face their taboo feelings... along with their places in the mortal realm, and the fae Wildlands.

Lessons in Unseelie Discipline is a standalone fantasy romance that ends with a happily ever after. This book contains dark themes and elements. It is intended for adult audiences. Please see the author's website for a more detailed list of themes.

“Lessons in Unseelie Discipline” introduces us to Lorne, half-Fae aged professor, and Sara, 25 yr old intellectual witch with a reputation for being mischief-adjacent to her two childhood friends. Lorne has been a near-constant presence in Sara’s life, being a friend and dueling mate for her father. Lorne is a secretive pleasure Dom, with a brat kink that, it seems, is tailor-made to be filled by Sara.
What I liked: quick read, with lots of steam. As a pleasure Dom, it’s way less bondage/pain and more bondage/org@sm until you pass out 😅. Lorne and Sara complement each other, and their relationship is nicely balanced in give/take.

Why 3 stars? Admittedly, I don’t dabble in a lot of fantasy romance. That said, I had trouble figuring out the dynamics of the different sects: generics (non-magical), witches/wizards, Fae - Seelies and Unseelies, with beast masters and mythical creatures and more? And then a use of Arcane which I think was a general term for magical people? There was not a good explanation of why and how they all come to co-exist or have factions… which comes into play since it seems to play a heavy role with Sara’s parents and with Lorne’s past. Usually I’m forgiving of lighter/absent world building (especially in romance genres), but with the trigger warning for suicidal ideation I need to know more. It is a left-hook when Lorne’s depression is exposed and his suicide plan is discussed. Overall I liked the heat, but have no idea how the portals work, how the word works, or who’s good, bad, or ignorable.

Tropes:
-age-gap
-magical/fantasy romance
-pleasure Dom/Brat FMC
-spanking
-Daddy kink
-hurt/comfort undertones

Sara Keyes – the main character - is a very smart, gifted witch supposedly “one of the best and brightest of her generation”, always has her head in a book. She was the top of her class but since graduating from college she is unfocused, directionless and can’t seem to find a job.

Lorne, the male main character - is Unseelie and hiding it. He is a Professor at Sara’s college and one of her father’s friends working undercover as a spy for his homeland. Sara and Lorne discover that they are very attracted to one another after Sara inadvertently draws his attention by interfering in a mock duel between Lorne and her father. Because Sara is the daughter of his friend and he is so much older than she, he tries – unsuccessfully, to sublimate his desire for her.

The story seems to primarily revolve around their incessant sexual relationship which becomes boring after a while.

There is an underlying, very convoluted, almost non-existent plot with a lot of holes. I skipped over a lot of the sex to find out what happened to Sara's parents, why they came under suspicion, what Lorne's role was in terms of spying on them, what led to Lorne's own disastrous parental relationship. I can't tell if part of the story was missing or if this is the beginning of a series or I just missed something.

There are some grammatical errors but the story overall is well written. It could have been fleshed out a bit more in terms of background - explaining the two different worlds, the dynamics and characteristics of the different factions according to the terms used (i.e. generics, Seelies and Unseelies, beastmasters).

I enjoyed reading this book, although it also left me somewhat unsatisfied. The story was interesting, Sara and Lorne’s relationship was fun, and the sex was HOT. The Sara under the table scene, the pleasure Dom’s punishments, both from Sara’s perspective and from Lorne’s, were a delight. If you’re looking for a quick read with lost of spice strung together with just enough plot, and you don’t care a whole lot how it all hangs together, this will be the book for you.

So why only 3 stars? Because if you’re looking for more, you will be disappointed. The world Hazel Jonas created seems interesting, but is too lightly sketched. Sometimes I had to read the same passage over a couple of times and exercise my imagination to figure out exactly what was happening, because it didn’t always hang together, and I was forced to fill in the blanks or just accept that certain things didn’t quite make sense. Why was Lorne Sara’s father’s best friend, given her father’s attitudes and opinions in general? It didn’t make sense. What exactly was the deal with Lorne and his father? That was never clarified. I would have liked. Much more developed plot, with more background information, and more careful world building, an oil painting, rather than a quick sketch.

Also, the writing left something to be desired. There were only two chapters with no grammatical or word choice errors, and some chapters had as many as seven quite noticeable errors. She needs a good editor, one with a strong grasp of English grammar.

I loved the idea of Lorne and Sara, but I don't feel it was executed properly. A lot of their major relationship milestones seemed to happen outside of the book, so it felt like I couldn't get as attached to then as I wanted to.

I don't have a single concept of what this world is like. It's almost like I missed n entire book that explained the basics of the world and how society works. I don't really understand much of what a Seelie or an Unseelie is, and I don't have a good grasp of what Sara is capable of. The stuff with her parents seemed to come out of nowhere and it didn't really hit me much because it didn't feel cohesive. The whole time I was reading, I was so desperate for a crumb of information to make everything fit together, and I don't feel I really got that.

Sara's relationships with her friends seemed a bit off as well. They were supposed to be this really tight group of troublemakers but at times it almost seemed like they were strangers to Sara. I didn't really get how any of them were friends, to be honest. They didn't jive well together at all.

I really wanted to like Lessons in Unseelie Discipline, but there were too many inconsistencies with the plot and the characters for me to really fall in love with this.

Lessons is Unseelie Discipline is a kinky romance that takes place in an alternate reality where there are non-magical people (generics), witches, wizards, and fae. Lorne is a half unseelie, half wizard who has been working Earthside as a professor for decades while subtly spying on illegal portal activity between Earth and the Wildlands. During this time he has become long term friends with Mick and Alise, who have a daughter, Sara. Stuck in a post-graduation ennui, protege Sarah is unsure what she wants to do with her life. When she interferes in a practice duel between Lorne and Mick, she inadvertently attracts the attention of Lorne. As Sarah becomes involved in the spying on unseelie sympathizers, the two start to develop a relationship.

As the relationship between Sara and Lorne develops, it becomes clear that they have more than just compatible kinks. Lorne is extremely conscientious and ensures that Sara doesn’t overwork herself. Sara is excellent at research and making sure Lorne takes the time to process past traumas. A thoroughly enjoyable age gap, dom/sub romance without any creepy grooming.

4.25 stars. Sara, the female witch lead, was the top of her class at every stage of learning but she hasn’t successfully transitioned to the workforce, unable to find a focus for her never ending curiosity. Lorne, the male Unseelie Fae lead, has been in the mortal realm for decades, working undercover to assist his realm, and a friend to Sara’s father.

When Sara inadvertently catches his attention, his learned mortal values clash with his Unseelie desires and, when their interactions occur more frequently, both struggle with their extreme attraction. But there doesn’t seem to be a way to make a relationship work…

This story is dual POV, well written, and an intense, darkly erotic, fantasy romance. I loved the intensity of the erotic intimate relationship balanced by Lorne’s mania for consent and contraception. I enjoyed Sara’s bright inquisitiveness and her playful brattiness. I enjoyed Lorne’s character development and his depth of feeling and intention. I enjoyed the relationship development. I enjoyed the secondary character engagement. I enjoyed the ending for Sara and Lorne and bonus story. I note this is part of a series and I’m curious to see where the author goes from here.

Hey everyone….

This book was a roller coaster. Given that this is my first book review for under BookSirens (I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily), I wanna be nice but this book was just lacking and i haven’t quite figured it out yet. the spice was alright but felt slightly unrealistic, but over all very entertaining.

If someone held a gun to my head and asked me what the plot of this book was, I would not make it home for dinner. Idk what was even going on in this book all I know is that he was older but in fairy land he wasn’t they were basically the same age, they went to weird or*y parties and her parents went to jail over a bomb(?)

I loved Sara tho she was a badass. What I tend to find when reading “grumpy x sunshine” plots is that she is often much bubblier then then main love interest and he’s literally a cardboard box but that wasn’t the case here. Although this book was approx. 300 pages, the characters has a lot of development and we seen them mature and grow into one another and I loved that!

Would I opt to buy this in a book shop?

Maybe not it’s a little out of my comfort zone but overall very entertaining.

Lots of love,

Yourmum

This was a lot of fun to read - but I found myself a little bemused at times!
I loved the mix of paranormal with bdsm (it was pretty steamy) and it was a quick and engrossing read with the seeds of a really great novel but....I felt it was a bit lacking on the world-building and some of the relationships were a little strange (the FMC with her school friends, the FMC with her parents).
I wanted a bit more background on magic system, more time on understanding the dynamics between the MC and the FMC before they got together, more detail on what the villain of the piece was trying to achieve (still haven't quite worked that one out). It almost felt like I'd missed a prequel or the first few chapters introducing me to the world.
But despite all that, I would definitely read another story in the same series, especially if it coloured in a few of the gaps!

A taste of what’s to come?

The hope that bleeds into those words has I type them. This being the first book in a series I am left excited for more. I got pulled into to this world and I did not want to leave.

The cast of characters has it all. A brooding grump, a snarky flirt, an over enthusiastic friend, a mysterious boss and so many more. Oh, and the story. Are you looking for a father’s best friend, professor, age gap, with the Fae, magic, mystery, and a good helping of spice thrown in? This is the book you want.

When Sara lets her curiosity and competitiveness get the best of her, she makes a mistake. What she doesn’t know is that one little slip is going to change her life. Buckle up and get ready to go on this wild ride with Sara and find out where it or who takes her.

I highly recommend this book and can not wait for the next.

I enjoyed this book. Though there were a couple places where I felt like the plot was maybe rushed just so it could get to another smut scene.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the smut in this book, but I'm also a plot junkie. I liked the general feel of the book.
The one thing that threw me off though was that I thought Lorne moving back to the Wildlands was always the plan, so I was completely confused by the break down he had in Sara's apartment.

Like I said, I enjoyed the book, but if I were to recommend it, it would more based on the smut and the "t@boo" professor/dad's best friend trope than the plot. It was there, just seemed to jump around a lot and wasn't as much as I was hoping.

Our hero has many secrets that he wishes to keep, but our heroine's teasing threatens to expose them. Can he teach her a lesson about teasing and still maintain is cover? Not very likely.

This is a fantasy romance story featuring BDSM and the fae. The story is well written and easy to read with a simple setting. The focus is on the hero and heroine as they dance around secrets and taboos. It is rather fun to watch things unravel and the steam that results is certainly fun. Overall, this was a fun book and I look forward to seeing more from this author.

Highly recommended.

This book was good. The fae trope was developed nicely with unique twist and I love a good age gap romance. I found both of the characters to be fairly endearing and was glad for them to be together. In my opinion, there were several plot holes that made it very difficult to keep up with what was going on. With very little explanation, the characters would suddenly be in a different place, doing something entirely different and as the reader I felt like I was just guessing how they ended up there. Overall though, this was a 3.5 star read and I enjoyed it, but likely won't continue the series.

I've never read anything by Hazel Jonas before and based solely on this book, not sure if I will try again. Sara, a wizard and a recent graduate, seems to be a loose ends. Lorne, a professor, her father's friend, and an Unseelie/Wizard, is attracted to Sara. There are all kinds of weird plot holes and I nearly gave up reading several times. This just wasn't very good. I'm certainly not invested in the story enough to read book 2.

If you're in the mood for a Dom-Brat fae story with plenty of smut then this s a good fit. Half-Unseelie Lorne and witch, Sara, are our two fated lovers. The whole wizardry-school made me think of the Jinx series, but wth wayy more spice! There's a cute dynamic between the two characters, and as a fan of reading Fae/fantasy stories, I jumped into the world quickly.
I have to say, as far as Fae Doms go - Lorne is fantasy-worthy ndeed.

“ Why be a good witch when it's so fun to be wicked...”
This fantastic read introduces us to Sara a 25 year old witch full of mischief and mayhem & Professor Lorne who is half fae & friends with Sara’s father and a lot older then Sara. It’s an intriguing story, fun, exciting , steamy and kinky and seeing Sara & Lorne’s relationship grow and develop was intense and dark in this paranormal, fantasy read.

It’s a bit difficult to come up with a summary of this book, as it deals with such topics as magic, politics, domestic terrorism, love, past traumas and a helluva lot of kinky sex.

At its heart, this is a love story between Sara and Lorne, two vulnerable souls who find comfort and healing in each other. And who have lots and lots of bedroom fun.

I’m hoping this isn’t the last we see of these two. The epilogue seems to imply we’ll be joining them on another adventure and I can’t wait.

A paranormal with bdsm and kink. In an alternate universe with the main characters with secrets who both need distractions. An enjoyable HOT spicy read that helped me keep my mind distracted. Rushed in places and tad confusing. Still able to follow and enjoy.

The storyline isn’t what kept my attention with this story. The spicy scenes are what made me want to continue on through. I didn’t think I had a daddy kink and the first few times it was mentioned, it made me cringe. But as I got further in, the scenes got better and I started to understand the appeal.

This is definitely steamy and I did like it a lot however I craved more plot. It definitely was steamy with lots of spicy scenes and explores a DOM brat relationship. If you are looking for something carnal with conflict this fits the bill. It’s definitely an interesting evolution of the relationship. I really enjoyed how a relationship wasn’t a magic fix to everything.

This is a great book. The characters are very bold and complex. Enemies to lovers. I love the slow build and the world that the author has created. I have so many questions and am dying to do some ‘research’. Really great plot. I hope to see more of this amazing author.

*“Love isn’t a cure-all. It can’t clear away years of ideation. Love provides you with the motivation to change for the better— for others and for yourself.”*

Thank you, Booksirens for providing an ARC. This is my honest review.

-Dom/ brat dynamic
-spanking
-inappropriate usage of ginger
-age gap
-safe bdsm/ aftercare 😍
-Daddy kink

This story definitely gives Harry Potter/ Halloweentown vibes with heaps of kink for good measure. I need to get me one of them Unseelie pleasure Dom faes.

Lorne, half-Unseelie, half-arcane (wizard), has been in the mortal world for over 20 years teaching as a Runes professor at a wizardry school. Sara, mid 20s, arcane (witch), stumbles upon her father's ex friend, Lorne, bleeding from a rogue manticore attack. And what does a know-it-all, witch do during this time? Of course she saves him, thus starting the teasing and kink-capades.

The world building was lackluster. I felt like I walked into the second book in a series where terms and definitions of creatures were already established. We don't know what happens to Sara's parents, why the friendship fell apart, or what led to Lorne's own parental relationship downfall.

Other than that, it was a quick book to get into and the development of Sara and Lornes' relationship was beautifully constructed. On top of that, the smut was top notch 👌🏻
