After twelve years in the country, Hamish, Lord Dalton, has returned to London to find a rich and titled wife. That’s his story, and he’s sticking to it. But Hamish has his own to create a scandal and embarrass his critical, condescending father. If only he knew how. Iris Abberton wasn’t always confined by expectation and obligation. As a young girl, she ran wild through the streets of London, causing chaos and playing tricks on the ton with her best friend, Hamish. Now, as the secret accountant for her father’s company, she spends her days juggling ledgers and maintaining appearances. Her wild years are behind her. And she cannot afford a hint of scandal if she is to realise her dreams for the business. But what harm could there be in one tiny adventure? Just one evening of fun with her mischievous—and incredibly handsome—old friend. It’s not as if their friendship has turned into something more. Iris’s heart does not tremble with unsaid things when Hamish is around. And nothing will sway Hamish from his mission. Yes, Iris is now all grown up, with sensual curves, kissable lips, and the same twinkle in her eyes, but he does not think about her in that way. They’re just friends. Understand? Friends . A Beginner’s Guide to Scandal is the first book in the Tales from Honeysuckle Street series. All books in the series are standalone reads. With a guaranteed HEA, A Beginner’s Guide to Scandal is a slow burn historical romance that goes from smouldering to HOT at just the right moment. It includes some strong language and sexy times. Alivia Fleur writes steamy romantic fiction for history lovers. In her stories, curious and consenting adults explore their desires as they search for their own happy ever after.
Alivia lives with her husband on a farm a long way from anywhere interesting. When not herding sheep or checking fences, she enjoys reading romance, drinking tea and eating cake, preferably all at once.

Should I read in order? This is Fleur’s first full length novel and the first in a new series titled Tales from Honeysuckle Street.
Basic plot: Hamish and Iris are ripped apart as young adults after a horrible accident. They are reunited when Hamish returns to town to find a wife.
Give this a try if you want: - Victorian time period (1875) - second chance - childhood friends to lovers - bit of class difference – hero is an Earl, heroine is the adopted daughter of a businessman - LGBT positive - working heroine – she manages her father’s company and hopes to revitalize and grow it with a new idea - masked event – - medium steam – I have it as 2 full scenes but they are pretty close together in the book
Ages: - Heroine is 29, didn’t see hero but think he’s similar age, maybe slightly older
First line: Iris knew where Hamish would be.
My thoughts: I have been looking forward to Fleur’s first full length novel since I tried Hide and Seek. She has a writing style I really adore and her characters are rich and vibrant and tug on my heart.
I loved a lot about this one even though it’s second chance, my least favorite trope 😆 I think it’s a testament to Fleur’s writing that she made feel the tension and longing between Hamish and Iris, the uncertainty of that blossoming relationship. And I loved that there wasn’t a ton of animosity built up between them like I find in many second chance novels.
The side characters in this novel were delightful. I had such a love for the life Iris was given and my heart broke for her father. I adored seeing this unique family structure I don’t usually find in historical romance. Hamish’s Aunt Tilly was just the best. I am so in love with her sass and personality and independence. Please give her a story someday! I love her so much!
I did want a touch more from Hamish, especially towards the end – but I also liked that he was flawed and made mistakes and didn’t always make the best choices. I would have loved to have known a bit more about Iris’s business and maybe an epilogue a bit further into the future. (But as this is the first in a series, I’m hoping these characters will make future appearances.) I was really excited for the ‘make me a rake’ plot point with Hamish and wish that was a touch more developed, just because it was so much fun!
I loved that this was character focused and by the end I felt I knew them both well. Honeysuckle Street was a delightful adventure and I am excited for more from the series.

Locations of kisses/intimate scenes: 3% - a vague and short sex scene 50% - kiss 60% - 🔥 kiss, fingering for her (leads to a bit of ‘dangerous feeling’ sex where there’s a police raid coming but they do it anyway), her on top (he pulls out) 69% - 🔥 oral/fingering for her leading to standing against a mantle, then her on top on the floor then him on top (he pulls out) followed shortly after by some brief mention of the rest of the night spent together
When we saw that Alivia Fleur had a new book out, we pounced on it! We've read all of her short fiction and really enjoyed her steamy short stories that still manage to pack in some emotional oomph.
A Beginner's Guide to Scandal is her first full-length novel. Its MCs are Hamish and Iris. We'd call it a friends to lovers sitch, because Iris and Hamish grew up roaming their quiet London neighborhood together, except that they haven't seen each other for literally a decade. Now, Hamish is back in town and trying to decide what to do with his life: be a good heir and follow his father's instructions to marry well? Or become a man about town in defiance of his family name?
Iris has more serious things to worry about: her family business was just going through its first expansion process when her father began to suffer from dementia. She's busy trying to make sure that her life doesn't fall apart when her first love waltzes back into her life.
We give the book major points for exploring a friendship that has been too-long neglected. What's more, the steam is impeccable: in what other book has our couple ignored a police raid because they are so desperate to get it on? (See also: what other book makes that "first time for a long time" a quickie because they just. can't. wait.?)
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel via BookSirens.
I love a good class-divide. As children Iris, a wealthy businessman’s daughter and Hamish, 2nd son to an Earl were inseparable. Running wild in the streets of London, seeking innocent mischief. Best of friends. Until a freak accident takes the life of Hamish’s mother and brother. Now Hamish is left with a miserable father who care only for duty & propriety. 12 years later Hamish returns to Honeysuckle Street with a plan to spite his father and instead finds he can’t get the girl next door out of his head. Their wild escapades were such fun to read. Iris is an amazingly strong woman. Caring for her ailing father, doing his work and her own secret work to keep his business strong and in their hands. She puts everyone else ahead of herself. Hamish is wonderful but also surprisingly young and stupid. You just wanted to reach in and shake him half the time. Thankfully, he rallies and comes out strong in he end. The characters within Honeysuckle Street vividly come alive and I am excited for more tales from this delightful cast. My emotions ran the gambit in this one. I truly felt the anguish when Hamish realized his mistake and Iris heartbreakingly steadfast heart. A smashing debut!
Tropes: friends to lovers, woman secretly taking on a man's role due to social constraints.
4 1/2 stars rounded to 5. This is this author's first full-length book, and I highly recommend it. It's charming and romantic, with just the right amount of steam and humor. The storyline is set in a British upper-crust community in the 1870's, and the author does a nice job with worldbuilding; you feel as if you're one of the neighbors. The MC's, Hamish and Iris, are both easy to empathize with. Hamish could have been your typical rake, but instead, is a young man who attempts to be one to humiliate his dad. He makes a complete hash of it. I appreciated his silly scenes and his vulnerability. He does make a Big Mistake toward the end, but it's primarily due to his naivete, and his grovel scenes are really sweet.
The secondary characters are also a delight; I was particularly touched by Iris's relationship with her father (this really hit home for me personally). All of the characters seem relatable even through their flaws.
The only thing I would have liked would have been for Hamish's Aunt Tilly to have some closure at the end. She was a fun, colorful dame, and I felt bad for how Hamish's father regarded her.
Overall: this is a gem. Read it, you won't regret it.
Steam level 3. There are a few "f-bombs", if that's a concern for you.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary review. Opinions are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher, and Net Galley for this opportunity.
Iris and Hamish certainly started off their story with some excitement didn’t they? Well not only that, but they brought some humor and cat and mouse to their flirtatious games. Hamish had eyes was only for Iris, but Iris had eyes for her father’s business. Other people didn’t like that though and so the entertainment was good. The romance was whoa! Amazing and wow! I love how the romance was the main focus to the story and was the grandstand of Iris and Hamish’s love affair. I enjoyed the book immensely. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
I received the ARC of this novel from the author on Facebook. I’d give it 2.5 stars, in actuality. There wasn’t anything I hated about this book, but it just didn’t make me happy. The couple, Iris and Hamish, knew each other from youth, and they loved each other, but then Hamish had to go away for several years and had to leave Iris behind. When he finally returned, they got along well, for the most part. Then Hamish decided he wanted to be a rake, so a lot of the story focuses on him trying to commit unwholesome acts. I didn’t care for Hamish because he was goofy and not manly in any way. It was just too silly for me. Not much happens in this story and certainly nothing exciting like you would normally find in romance novels (like kidnapping or betrayal). The writing, however, was decent, and I hope the book is edited for errors before being released.
2.5 stars rounded up. The story of two old friends who’ve always held a torch for each other was lovely, and the characters were likeable. Even though he was in theory hellbent on pissing off his cold and distant father, Hamish was sweet and charming, especially as we saw him fumble his rake education, and Iris was a very competent businesswoman. However, I had major issues with the writing; I don’t know how it was possible that the style of address "His Grace" and its variants weren’t spelled correctly even once. You’d think its Historical Romance 101. Also, Hamish slept off his hangover on the lounge; I guess that was supposed to be on the chaise longue? The text needed some tightening up, but I did enjoy the central relationship.
I loved Iris and her story is the more interesting of the two main characters. She is woman that knows what she wants and works hard to achieve her goals and maintain her friendships and family relations. Hamish seems very childish in certain ways his goals at the beginning of the book and his inability to be clear about his true wants and desires seem reflected in the coldness his father showed him. I like a little more groveling from men, but ill accept it. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book so much, I could not put it down! Iris was a fun, quirky heroine and paired with the charming Hamish made for an engrossing story. I highly recommend it!

Iris is such a lovely woman, she knows she is a lucky one, she has the backing of awesome relatives who helped her become the woman she is now, they never stifled her spirit, always encouraging her to be her true self. But now to take over her father’s legacy, she must for a time put a lid on the wilder side of herself, pkus she is no more fifteen, she understands the difference between childhood fun and adult behavior. What Hamish seems to struggle with. While he has been the tenant of her heart her whole life, his long absence dimmed the hold he had on it, so to renew his lease, he must now prove he is worthy of it.
Twelve years to make him a future Earl is a long time to rusticate in the countryside. So while I understand his need to break free from his cage after a so long time, his young adult years under his sire’s thumb. He is indeed no more fifteen. I found the lessons in becoming a rake a bit weird, I always thought a rake was innerly a rake, with no need to be tough how to be one. And with Hamish, it was like turning a sheep into a wolf. He has not a rake’s bone in his body, why it is at the same time entertaining and awkward to witness him trying to impersonate someone he could never be. Plus by doing so, he is hurting the person who counts the most for him, so focused on freeing himself from his father’s hold, he does not see the harm he wreaks on Elinor’s dreams.
An amusing tale of a man who struggles to be himself, lost between others’ expectations, his heart’s desires and society’s demands. 4 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Years ago, Hamish Dalton the forgotten younger son of an earl, and Iris Abberton, the adopted daughter of a rich businessman were the best of friends, but tragedy tore them apart and they didn’t see each other for almost 13 years. Hamish is now the heir to his father’s earldom and chaffing under his constant criticisms and the pressure of living up to the ghost of his elder brother. He has been sent back to London to find a proper wife, but Hamish has other plans, he plans to start a scandal to upset his father and ruin his plans. His problem is, he doesn’t really know how to go about it, so he goes to his Aunt Tilly, who was disowned years ago and then became a courtesan to support herself. She agrees to help him, thrilled his plan are finally in motion, he returns to his house and is surprised to see his childhood friend and neighbor, Iris. He can’t believe she hasn’t married and moved away. He finds himself drawn to her, and despite his plans to thwart his father, he can’t seem to stay away from her.
Iris Abberton has loved Hamish Dalton for as long as she can remember and was heartbroken when he left after the accident that killed his mother and elder brother. She tried to stay in touch with him, but he never replied to her letters, so she stopped writing. She and her father spent years traveling the world and expanding their business, but now her father’s memory is declining and she is desperately trying to hide that fact from the company’s board, they have no idea that Iris has been running things for her father and wants to join the board and expand the business. She has plans to see this happen, but then Hamish returns and she can’t resist him. But when his plans succeed, it destroys hers and for the first time ever, Iris walks away from Hamish. Can he find a way to make things right and win her back or has he truly lost the only woman he ever loved?
This was an interesting and steamy story of reunited lovers and their bumpy road to HEA. The book is filled with emotion, hijinx, forbidden love, steamy love scenes, heartache, wonderful secondary characters, groveling, second chances, and finally a HEA. I enjoyed this book, I would have liked to see Hamish right his wrongs a bit quicker, and an epilogue a few years later would have been nice. But overall, it was a good read and I would be happy to recommend this title. This is the first book in a new series, but the author states each book can be read as a standalone title.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
"A Beginner's Guide to Scandal" is my first read from Alivia Fleur. I didn't love this book, but it was decent enough for me to be willing to give the author another shot should I stumble across another one of her books.
Hamish and Iris are childhood besties that became more one night in the wake of tragedy when they were both 18. Iris has been in love with Hamish for several years at that point but she has not and does not tell him of her feelings. He leaves the next day and essentially ghosts Iris for the next 12 years, not responding to any of her communications. She gives up on him but takes the (arguably better) opportunity to travel the world with her father and his lover. Back on English soil, Iris is helping her father to expand their business when he develops dementia, leaving all on Iris' shoulders.
Hamish, meanwhile, returns to Honeysuckle Lane with strict orders to marry an aristocratic woman. His father is still alive so he is not yet the Earl, but his father insists he do his duty. Hamish. however, wants to become a rake instead. Amidst his efforts, Hamish and Iris spend time together again and her feelings for him return in full force. Hamish takes a little - okay, a lot longer - to figure out his emotions, though they do get a HEA.
My biggest reason for not liking this book is that Hamish is an a** for most of it. He allows himself to be browbeaten by his father, talks to Iris of his previous lovers, and generally is unimpressive. The scene proceeding the 3rd act split is brutal in his treatment of her. I kept thinking Iris, with all of her intelligence and strength, could do better.
I did enjoy the secondary characters in this book, and will likely read additional entries should they come my way. I also liked the almost casual inclusion of same sex oriented characters, with the main characters easily accepting what the larger society of this time would not.
3 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this title. The opinions herein are my own.
This childhood-friends-to-lovers story is sweet, steamy, and layered with poignant moments. Iris and Hamish are unforgettable characters whose journey is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking. Iris, with her intelligence, strength, and devotion to her father’s legacy, shines as a heroine. Hamish, shaped by insecurities and a difficult past, is a compelling counterpart, and their reunion brims with passion and healing. Their love feels authentic, built on a foundation of friendship, mutual respect, and second chances. The emotions evoked in the opening prologue, where Iris comforts Hamish and they make love for the first time, left a lasting impression. This hauntingly beautiful moment sets the stage for an equally stunning story.
The book masterfully explores the complexities of love, family, and societal expectations. The main characters are well-drawn and compelling, their devotion to each other shining through despite the many trials they face. Their journey is riddled with obstacles—differing social standings, familial obligations, and unspoken expectations—but the chemistry and personal growth make their story deeply rewarding.
Hamish’s strained relationship with his father adds emotional depth, as his actions stem from a mix of rebellion and self-discovery. His journey from seeking revenge to finding redemption is both satisfying and poignant. In contrast, Iris’s adoration for her loving father brings heartfelt warmth to the narrative. Her strength, determination, and intelligence shine as she faces every conflict with grace and courage, making her an admirable heroine. Their contrasting family experiences shape them into characters who balance each other perfectly.
This delightful second-chance romance is a touching reminder that love can flourish against the odds, making it a truly enjoyable and memorable read.
Alivia Fleur has crafted a stunning debut filled with love, passion, and heart. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, all thoughts are my own.
I loved the characters in this book, this is an intriguing story of childhood friends that are parted due to a tragedy. Hamish and Iris run wild through London as best friends. Getting into trouble and scraps, climbing trees and being best friends. All that ended when his mother and Brother were killed. Taken by his stern, heartless father to the county to learn what will be expected of him someday. Twelve years under his father's thumb doing all he could to get just a little recognition. Then he learns that second best is never good enough. Now returning to London to find a wife that his father wants he has plans of his own. Revenge to get even with the old man! He wants scandal and embarrassment to be attached to his name. Iris lost her best friend and the love of her life when Hamish left without looking back. He never wrote to her or answered her letters. Her father and her traveled the world for his business till he started showing signs of dementia. A woman/spinster now she spends her days trying to keep his illness secret and run the business in secret. When Hamish showed back up in the neighborhood. The last thing she needs is any scandal around her, but what harm could one more advantage with an old friend/lover do? Neither Hamish nor Iris could have known how easy the time away could be forgiven and a new feeling start. This is a story of second chances, lost love, but also what happens when one doesn’t think past his revenge. Hurting the one person who loves you and was always there for you. With twist and turn, great characters mostly his aunt Tilly and her friends. You will cry, laugh, and want to slap some and cheer at the end. A book not to be missed. This is a steamy story for those who like to know. I wish there had been an epilogue letting us know what happened to some of the people. I received an ARC from the author and wisht to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. Can’t wait for the next book.
This is the first book I have read by Alivia Fleur. This was also an advanced reader copy, please note my thoughts and opinions are my own. The two main characters, Hamish and Iris grew up together on Honeysuckle St. in London. On the day Hamish’s mother and brother are killed, they have a tender intimate encounter, then he leaves the next day to return to his father’s country estate without a backward glance. He is gone from Iris’ life for a dozen years. During those years Iris traveled with her father, learned the family business, and was able to tour the world’s amazing places. Meanwhile, Hamish remained isolated with his father, book learning from a myriad of tutors and his father as he will inherit the Earldom. He is pinned under his father’s thumb, seems to have no will of his own, and has turned into a bore. It took several tries for me to really get into the book. It was a slow starter. Because of something his father mutters in delirium, Hamish decides to create a scandal and ruin the family name. He turns to family outcast, his Aunt Tilly for advice and to turn him into a rake. The connection between Iris and Hamish needs to sizzle off the pages, it doesn’t. Hamish’s lame attempts at creating a scandal include wearing a hideous waistcoat. And then, Hamish actually creates a scandal without meaning to because it involved Iris. There is some steam and the two seem to be hitting their stride when his father finds out and demands his return from London. He meekly retreats. I did like Iris’ character, she was a business-savvy woman trying to get a seat on her father’s board where she would be the only woman, what the board doesn’t know is, she was running the company in her father’s stead because of his dementia. She also spent her days taking care of her father. She had grown in those twelve years. I guess I wanted more from Hamish, to be strong and to be his own self. I ended up giving this story three stars, it lacked sizzle and passion, it didn’t keep me hooked from beginning to end.
A Beginner’s Guide to Scandal, Alivia Fleur’s first full-length novel, is a beautifully written story about two childhood friends who reunite after 12 years of forced separation. As children, Iris and Hamish, living with their families on Honeysuckle St. in London, are best friends and are given some latitude due to their stations; Hamish is the second son to an earl, and Iris is the adopted daughter of a successful businessman. In their late teenage years, Hamish is suddenly the heir after a carriage accident claims the life of his mother and brother. His embittered father whisks him to the country seat of the earldom where Hamish is kept firmly under his thumb. The story picks up 12 years later when Hamish returns to town to find a wife. Iris, having spent the intervening years travelling with her father and learning about his company’s business, is now doing all her father’s work to cover for his declining mental abilities (dementia in modern terms). What follows is the story of two kindred spirits learning to understand their changing relationship and their respective places in their worlds.
I loved the way Fleur keeps the focus on the characters and reveals them to us through action, gestures and dialogue. Her writing is impeccable, layered and absorbing. Even her secondary characters a richly drawn and bring more meaning to the story. I particularly enjoyed her sensitive portrayal of Iris’s father, both in terms of his dementia and in his relationship with long-time lover, Jonah. The historical detail is well-researched (I loved learning about the puzzle jug). There is lots of humour, witty banter, and steam to keep the story lively. Hamish and Iris are both lovable and have wonderful chemistry. I highly recommend this compelling debut novel and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Iris and Hamish are the closest of childhood friends, running wild and daring each other to get up to all sorts of mischief. Then a tragic accident takes the lives of Hamish’s mother and older brother (and heir). Before Hamish leaves for the country estate to live with his injured father, he and Iris spend a night together. Twelve years later Hamish returns to Honeysuckle Street on his father’s orders to find a suitable wife, but he is determined to rebel against this and cause a scandal instead. Meanwhile, after having travelled around the world with her father and learning about the company, Iris is now trying to carry on his legacy, working hard running the business secretly whilst caring for him as he is suffering from Alzheimer’s.
If you are used to Alivia Fleur’s short steamy novellas then this has a different, slower pace although the well written steamy scenes remain. Iris and Hamish’s reunion results in a reignition of the passion that had begun from their first time together, though it seems to take Hamish far too long to recognise his feelings of love. I found Hamish’s actions annoying and immature at times, and hypocritical – being jealous at the thought Iris might have had lovers when he himself has had plenty of affairs himself. Iris shows great dignity and courage through the hurt and scandal caused by Hamish’s actions and the resolution when it comes, is satisfying. Although I still think Iris is far too good for Hamish, I did want their HEA. If Fleur ever decides to write a prequel telling Iris’s father and Jonah’s story, I would love to read it. I am looking forward to future books about the residents of Honeysuckle Street and returning to give Spencer some chin scritches.
Iris Abberton and Hamish Dalton were born 2 weeks apart, had grown up together, roamed the streets of London and shared every single secret. At 18 Hamish lost his older brother and mother in an accident. Iris had tried to comfort him, and they had shared a night of passion. The next day he disappeared. At 19 Iris knew London Society wasn’t for her and neither was waiting for Hamish, so she joined her father on his travels around the world.
Now, 12 years later, Albert Abberton’s memory had become hazy and unreliable. The successful businessman had always nurtured her interest in his company, and bit by bit she had secretly taken over his work. Iris knew one day the board would notice, but she had a plan!
Nearly 30 and heir to the Earl Caplin, Hamish had been dispatched to London by his hateful father to find a wife “no lower than a viscount’s daughter”. That same man had forced him into seclusion years earlier. Hamish was out for revenge and he had a plan!
Honeysuckle Street reunites them. Their friendship blossoms again and old feelings flare up. The only trouble is that his plan unknowingly interferes with hers…
📚 Vivid and colourful characters, his clumsy attempts at becoming a rake, her giant heart and determination, a hefty dose of mischief and adventures, unbridled curiosity leading to delectable steam, and a unique bond between the MCs. This is my kind of romance: witty, quick, touching, full of heart, tons of chemistry, so much longing and thoroughly enthralling! I loved it and I can’t wait to read what happens next in this series! 📚 Childhood friends to lovers, unrequited love, wannabe rake/adopted heiress, second chance
There's something about this book... it's lighthearted, yet deep. Simple, yet layered with complexity of emotion and the realities of lived experience. Gorgeous!
A Beginner's Guide to Scandal is a classic second chance romance, and from the outset it may appear as if that's all there is to it. Where Fleur's writing stands out is in the detail - the characterization, the description of emotion & small moments in time, and the writing itself. Her style is neither flowery nor sparse, but a perfect middle ground, with wit, humor and deeply emotional language placed carefully in just the right places.
I particularly loved the depiction of Iris's love and her care for her father - who is suffering from Alzheimer's. It's gorgeously, and poignantly written. Iris and Hamish's relationship is also incredibly well drawn and believable. It's clear from the outset that they love each other, yet it's just as clear that they've resigned themselves to being apart.
Hamish is not a typical romance hero, and in some ways he serves as a parody to the classic romance "rake," (which I very much enjoyed!) But more than that, he's a simple, well meaning, young man who's found himself in an untenable situation. It takes him a while to figure out what's right, and I, for one, found that to be believable to his situation. Overall, I found his character quite refreshing.
The whole book, in fact, is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended!
Thank you to Alivia Fleur for gifting me a copy of A Beginner's Guide to Scandal. All thoughts are my own.
This was my first book by Alivia Fleur, and I was pleasantly surprised.
When I first decided to read this book, I went and read a few reviews all were good giving this book a high 4 stars. For me it was a 5-star book here is why I personally enjoyed it.
First, I enjoyed the depth of the characters. When we first meet Hamish and Iris they are young and best friends. Then life takes over, and it's years later before we meet them again. By this time Iris is trying to continue her father's legacy in a man's world. Hamish is just trying to survive by not becoming his father.
There are a lot of unique characters in this book from Aunt Tilly to Iris's staff. I love that the characters in this book all had unique personalities and a backstory. Now surprised me more than Iris's from the beginning. I also loved that we got to see Hamish and Iris reconnect, and the passion ignites again. I felt this story was simple yet had depth and layers. The characters were unique and in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed every page.
As for the heat factor, I thought the author did a great job. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and felt the author did a fabulous job creating a story with characters I liked and who had something to say. I was so happy I read this book and look forward to reading more by Alivia Fleur.

This is the first book of a new series, Tales of Honeysuckle Street, and also my first experience reading something by this author and it won't be my last. I'm always on the lookout for new Regency authors, and I've definitely found a keeper! Iris and Hamish grew up together but then were separated for many years. Hamish is now back in town, claiming he is back to search for a wife. But what Hamish really wants is to be the one to humiliate his father, who cares only about duty and propriety. But the little wild child he used to run around town with has grown into a beautiful woman, and he can't seem to get her out of his mind. With her father now ill, Iris is trying to keep everything together and keep the business running. She puts everyone's needs ahead of her own. She can't afford to be the carefree girl she once was. But when Hamish comes back to town, she finds herself thinking, what harm could it be to have a little fun and adventure? I enjoyed getting to know the characters, especially Iris. She is hard working and has a good head on her shoulders, and knows what she wants. The author did a nice job of bringing the story and characters to life, and I was engrossed in the story from start to finish. A delightful start to what looks to be a captivating series! I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

I requested this book at random from the catalog because I'm a sucker for historical romances. I don't always care for second chance romances because I prefer every section of the relationship to occur on-page. The first chapter slammed into me like a cannonball when it mentioned the couple's first romantic encounter in the past. I didn't expect our characters to start sucking face too quickly, but at least the author didn't dillydally? Immediately after that liaison, it's nearly a decade later and the protagonists are meeting each other as adults. It was a major time jump and it gave me whiplash from the abruptness.
I read this book very quickly and unfortunately didn't retain much information. It was a basic historical romance and nothing stood out for me. It had nice spiciness and the characters were totally into each other, but that was it. I wish I could recall more elements or give a better critique, but I'm drawing a blank here. I liked the heroine's ginger hair, but that's my best recollection of their physical features. I most likely won't read future publications from this author, but I'm always honored to read advanced copies. It seems like this truly was a beginner's guide to scandal because I'm not interested in future lessons.
Beautiful, breathtaking, heartrending: just three of many adjectives I would use to define this astounding debut novel by Alivia Fleur. I loved her short stories and I looked forward to a full-length book by her. And I wasn’t at all disappointed! This wonderful, sweet and steamy book has lots of touching moments, some humor and some angst and a very poignant childhood-friends-to-lovers story. It tore my heart in a most pleasant way and I even cried for a character who lost himself to a hideous illness (I don’t want to spoiler anything) while he deserved so much more from life for his kindness and worth. I loved the main characters, especially Iris, so smart and strong in the face of adversity. Hamish is a fundamentally insecure man who suffered quite a lot and he really needed her to bring him back to life. I really couldn’t blame him for anything he did… I loved the idea of a series that revolves around a fictional London street, I thought it brilliant, and I can’t wait to see what the other characters introduced in this book will do. Five stars are not enough for this little masterpiece! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Historical romance. Victorian-era England. Book 1 of the Tales from Honeysuckle Street series. Childhood friends and neighbors Iris and Hamish are separated when Hamish suddenly becomes the heir to an earldom, losing his mother and older brother in a carriage accident. When Hamish returns to town twelve years later, he’s been instructed by his father to find a suitable wife, but he plans to thwart his father’s plans and create a scandal instead. Meanwhile, Iris has been assisting with her father’s merchant company, traveling the world, and learning the business for the past decade. However, her father’s mental state has been declining for many years and Iris has been keeping it secret. As Hamish and Iris reunite, they have to deal with her heartbreak after he left, their differences in social station, and her need to stay proper so that the board of directors will approve of her joining the leadership of her father’s company. It’s a huge mess competing interests and Hamish is mostly an idiot throughout the book. I did enjoy reading about all of the quirky neighbors on the street and am looking forward to reading more from this series.
This is a very whimsical love story of a second son becoming heir apparent and an adopted girl who lived next door. It's about trying to get revenge on your father, but end up hurting the very one you love. Take none of the advice seriously in this book, it could only get you in trouble, just as Hamish is about to find out. The best part of this book is when the son stops hating his father long enough to actually start understanding him. Understanding can bring about ways to actually get what you want from life, and Hamish learns that lesson late in his life. Iris is independent, strong and confident. She's a woman who has learned many lessons as she traveled the world with her father. She has the business acumen and accounting skills of a savant. The best part of her is twelve years later after Hamish was called to his father's estate, she still loves him and harbors no regret. She knows she can live a good life with or without him. Hamish attempts as a rake are whimsical and ridiculous, but it kept me smiling throughout the story. It's a good story and Hamish's plot is really weak, but that's the fun in this story.
Twelve years ago, Hamish and Iris were friends. Then tragedy struck his family and his father took him to their country estate. His father has sent him to London to find a suitable wife. Hamish comes to town as his father instructed, but he plans to use the trip as a means to get revenge for the way his father has treated him. Iris is caring for her father, who seems to be suffering from dementia. She also does everything she can to keep up with his responsibilities at the company. They had begun to court, and the feelings they had before revived when Hamish made a foolish and scandalous mistake. Will he be able to make amends and convince Iris that they belong together? This is a fast-paced entertaining story with some drama, fun, and a shaky romance. The characters are great. Iris is strong, caring, and knows just what she wants. Hamish has never been able to please his father and feels unworthy because of it. He is somewhat immature, but is beginning to come into his own. Aunt Tilly is a charmer. This is a great introduction to the residents of Honeysuckle Street, and ends with a hard-won happy ending. I received a special copy of this book via BookSirens and voluntarily reviewed it.
I loved this book! Alivia Fleur is now a confirmed favourite for me and I can’t wait to devour everything she’s written.
Both Iris and Hamish were wonderful main characters. They were both layered, both dealing with so much pain and responsibility, both desperate to have some fun in their lives but unsure quite how to go about it.
Their romance had me hooked from the start. Estranged friends to lovers with just a hint of second chance romance??? Delicious. The mutual pining was everything
I’ve also never found a game of cards so sexy in my life. 🔥
I’m usually one to skim over the spicy scenes. Maybe I was just in the right mood, but the spice was absolutely wonderful in this book. Sensual and emotional and hot as hell.
I love that every single side character, even the street’s cat, were absolutely brimming with character.
Albert and Jonah were particular faves of mine. They made my heart ache. They were such a lovely little side addition and their love for each other shone through every interaction.
If you like historical romance with some spice, I highly recommend.
The following are my thoughts as I read this book. Iris Abberton… childhood friend to Hamish, secretly running her father’s business, hiding father’s diminished mental state. Hamish Dalton… heir to Earl Caplin, childhood friend to Iris, returning to hometown after twelve years. Eww, I do not envy the H and the dictates he must follow. The h seems to be avoiding the H, I wonder why. Uh oh the H is about to do something totally out of character. The H is playing his role well but the h may become a casualty of his actions. Ok the h is going for her and her father’s dream, even though the odds are against her. Yep I was right but the H devised a rebound plan her, awww. The story took a minute to get into the flow. I think what I liked most was the persona of the h, she wasn’t the usual pampered “princess” nor was she a low class street urchin. The H, also was not a rake although he tried to be one, LOL. There is mild language and steam. Overall, an adorable story of undying love.
