As the b-boy brigade wraps up, it’s time for a lot of place setting as the pieces are in motion for the upcoming school tournament. Kabo’s feeling it in more ways than one after his big match, but Wanda remains as elusive as ever.
My unconditional love for this very unconventional series means you should take every review with a grain of salt, but probably especially this one, since it definitely gets things moving but very little reaches its destination.
We see the continued rise of Wanda and Kabo in their respective styles, but they still can’t seem to connect. When they do, however, it really feels that the spark from earlier on might reignite fairly quickly.
And that’s why I love Wandance, even when it ignores its titular character half the time - it is a celebration of dance and also there’s the promise that somebody is about to start rocking out at a moment’s notice.
While this doesn’t do much for plotting, it does introduce a ton of people who will undoubtedly be pivotal in the next big competition. Both in good ways and… less so.
The ‘boo hiss’ side definitely seems poised to be filled in by the president of the school that Wanda’s friend, Rise, is part of as literally the sole female member. The guys in the club are all social media carnivores, but Kenbi, the president, is also a womanizing jerk to boot.
Sometimes you just want a good villain and this guy is just raising his hand begging for the teacher to call on him. Hopefully just before he gets schooled.
Another dancer in the main club gets some development as a potential successor to On, although Iori has that covered, and On turns out to have a vicious rival of her own. Their throwdown that isn’t a throwdown was great.
And Kabo keeps trying to find himself, of course, amidst his struggles with his stutter, a new job that is a heck of a trial for him, and his new love of battling.
Mix in the usual art that I love, lots of brief moments to flesh out the main cast and important side players and it just adds up to fine by me.
I absolutely adore this series with no caveats and it has such consistency that I don’t have a ton to say, other than that this volume continued to be just as fantastic as the last. There are a lot of things that you could nitpick here, but the way this conveys the passion and joy the characters have always works for me.
5 stars - one of my very few ‘no notes’ automatic five star series. Unless something egregious happens in upcoming volumes that isn’t going to change either.

This volume was ok. I feel like this series is starting to drag though. Not much going on and then having to wait between volumes. And only 1 scene with Wanda and Kabo?!

The storytelling is often telegraphic, placing the focus on the grace, energy, and beauty of street dance through vividly depicted scenes. This could so easily be a standard shonen story, and it does dip its toe in that pool every now and then, reminding us that the main characters are still in high school while remaining true to its vision. A truly unique manga, and highly recommended.
