The same as book one, Rebel’s Consort, it was clunky getting introduced to the characters and LeMoyne's futuristic and dystopian Earth. But after the reader gets through those necessities, this book takes off. Don't let the rocky start dissuade you from venturing into this highly detailed and character-rich book. I liked this sequel even more than book one.

We met Shepherd in book one, but Esme is a completely new character whose layers and backstory unfold in tantalizing, mysterious chunks. Just as she is an unknown to Shepherd, she is an unknown to the reader. You get her emotions, but not necessarily her motivations. I liked how LeMoyne set me up to think one way about Esme (and how this plot would go), only to find she completely psyched me out. Shepherd is attracted - but confused - about Esme and her motivations, too.

Her response left him doomed personally and professionally, because the pivotal part of the plan now hinged on a woman he trusted from only his gut instinct - or perhaps lower.

For Esme, Shepherd compromises himself and the mission, which is totally out of character for this intelligence officer who manages logistics for rebel incursions. Sci-fi romance readers who like a good cyborg story will love Shepherd's backstory, enhancements and his struggles. Again, the tech - and the destructive way in which it came about - is both fascinating and horrifying.

The technology is basically a character in this book, just like in Rebel’s Consort. While book one had a heavy emphasis on futuristic medical science, this book builds on that and adds in engineering, robotics and systems. The tech is very integrated into the story line and is imaginative but practical. I could see where LeMoyne would get the kernel of an idea from real world science and run with it. This author is very talented in describing futuristic tech in a clear and believable way. Down Below is a variation on the best dystopian, disenfranchised movie/tv sets (like Total Recall or The Expanse).

This book was published in 2013, so I don't know if LeMoyne has any plans to continue her futuristic world. If she wrote book 3 in this universe, I would pick it up in a heartbeat. I want Aaron's story!

KH LeMoyne hits another one out of the park. I feel in love with Shepherd when I read the first book in the Phoenix series. The book deals starts 150 years after genetically enhanced crops and livestock decimate the Earth with a lethal bacterial strain of Salmonella only twenty percent of the world’s population remains. Two groups exist: the Regents, the owners of the technology and rule their individual cities with an iron hand and those who exist under their thumb.

Shepherd handles the underground network of Down Below. He’s a technological whiz where outwitting the Regents is a matter of life or death. He and Radar work together to rescue children from the horror of the Regents. Now one of their own who was kidnapped and turned into a soldier for the Regent and if he isn’t rescued will die on the next mission. Into this high pressure world enters Radar’s wife, Esme Loures Vier. She follows Radar, and misconstrues his and Shepherd’s meeting, believing Radar is a weapons-runner like her late husband—whose actions got her thrown into jail and almost executed. Shepherd soon learns the success or failure of their rescue plan hinges his prisoner, Esme.

This book hits the ground running from page one. As I read the last word, I smiled and sighed. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. But as you all know, I love KH LeMoyne’s books and wait with baited breath for each new one. She writes books from wonderful fantasy romance to gripping futuristic romances.

Wow!! Even better than Rebel's Consort! I fell in love with the characters and their cause in book one and book two did not disappoint.
Esme is saved by Ty-(Radar) from inevitable execution. She may owe her life to Ty but she gives her heart to Clay aka Shepherd. From start to finish you are rooting for the characters and hoping that they save the team member taken by the Regents. I absolutely can't wait for the next book in this series and hope to get Wolf aka Aaron's story soon!! Excellent book from the first to the last word!
