Rate this book
Upon losing his wife, an ex-adventurer must contend with politics, monsters, and fatherhood, in the first book of a moving and imaginative fantasy series.

Not much daunts Rakta Velbrun. He has immigrated from Rusk to the Certillian Empire, traveled the realm battling unspeakable creatures with his adventuring guild, and faced off against the Warlock King himself. But when his wife, Lydia, passes away in childbirth, leaving him the sole caretaker of their three infant children, he finds himself in unfamiliar territory.

Rakta is certain of one he’ll do whatever it takes to protect Daka, Dalton, and Natakia from danger . . . even accept the lordship—rife with power plays, dirty deals, and dangerous secrets—his late wife’s conniving family has offered him. To both keep his children safe and prevent his new domain from becoming a pawn in courtly games, he’ll need to rekindle old alliances, forge new treaties, and combat strange enemies.

But the greatest challenge Rakta must face will come from somewhere far closer to home than he could’ve ever imagined . . .

My Children From Another World: Dawn, by Payton Fletcher (a.k.a. _Glasses)

TL;DR: Very solid and entertaining story, decent writing rife with editing and proofreading errors, four stars for overall entertainment value.

Dawn is a fantasy novel with isekai features and an intermittently multiple point-of-view narrative. Our MC is Rakta, a Ruskan adventure turned husband turned widowed Lord, who accepts the life of a noble in order to care for his unnervingly intelligent and hyper-aware newborn triplets. At odds with his deceased wife's slyly corrupt family, he does everything in his power to protect his children from their interfering grasp while also embarking on journeys and adventures that take him away from them.

Payton Fletcher has done a wonderful job creating a world that pulls the reader into it, along with an entertaining cast of characters for us to get to know. Rakta is a relatable character, doing everything in his power to protect his children while mourning the death of his wife. His children, Daka, Dalton, and Natakia, are very interesting and developed despite being babies. Other characters (avoiding including names to prevent spoilers) help him along the way, and see their own characters' personalities grow in the process. The end of the novel leaves the reader with many questions to be answered in future installments.

The main issues the novel faces are related to editing and proofreading. Run-on sentences, grammatical errors, and overly confusing passages are unfortunately common, and where the story keeps you engaged, these can definitely pull you out of your groove as your brain stops to reconstruct the author's writing. It really is a regrettable situation as the story is great. I do hope that the future novels are more carefully corrected.

Despite these issues, I would still say that the book is definitely worth a read. If you enjoy fantasy, isekai elements, and a lot of magic and fighting, the story should appeal to you. It gives distinctly anime and video game vibes, especially in the way the author deals with the skills used by the characters. It took some getting used to, but overall I'd say that I enjoyed it.

So give it a shot - especially if you have Kindle Unlimited. $0 makes it a pretty risk-free read. Enjoy!

Overall, I enjoyed this fast paced read that had a few isekai-ed characters but not taking centre stage (at least not yet). Having a dad of three kids as the main character was a refreshing change to read (would've been better if his wife had been alive and the story was actually slice-of-life instead of epic). Also, not sure how it is reverse-isekai!
