About the author

LeAnn Robinson was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho (nobody ever guesses what state I'm from), but then began the life of a nomad, quickly moving to southern Texas; Seattle, WA; California, Argentina, Georgia... and the list goes on. She has visited/lived in the five major continents, speaks fluent Spanish, and revels in learning about strange cultures and new places.

LeAnn's writing career began in the forth grade, when she sold her first book, a hand-drawn, hand-lettered edition, on folded 8 1/2 by 5 1/2' paper for ten cents. Then, there was a large lull, while she served thirty years in the military and worked to hone her craft (and learn what the hell she was doing with her writing).

This is a fun read. Aliens come to earth doing mass kidnappings for some unknown reason. The U.S. Army deploys to throughout the U.S. and engages the aliens during a mass abduction attempt. The military procedures described seem authentic and plausible for this situation (which has, of course, never happened in real life). I did think that omitting some of the early chapters written from the aliens’ point of view would have increased the tension (we are more afraid of the unknown than the known).

Colonel Patrice Sullivan resolves to defeat the enemy aliens and rescue their captives, but it looks like she has almost no resources. In other chapters, the reader can follow the individual aliens as they plot against the earthlings and struggle for dominance against each other. Causing smoke and fog helps, but not completely. Time after time, Patrice has to come up with ideas to thwart the aliens. I kept turning pages to see how she’d best the aliens before they’d manage to take over earth. Great story.

I enjoyed reading this book. Several misspellings etc. (see notes). I mean, the author apparently was also a colonel, according to the cover, but it's hard for me to believe that our protagonist, also a colonel in the U.S. Army, was so tormented by doubt that it rendered her ineffective, at least in the first half of the story.

Colonel Robinson tells a great story with strong characters and a fast-moving plot. She knows a bit about wars and such. I'm going to read the rest of the series!
