Started while driving into Eastern Montana on I-90 and finished while driving on I-84 in Idaho on our way to Nevada.
My sister gave this to me as a birthday gift as we were getting ready to buy our RV and start traveling. (She even had the author autograph it for me.)I saved it for a road trip and this was the one. It was a homespun type of read and a bit rustic. Unfortunately my linear, detail-oriented brain was distracted by quite a few typos.
Jim Phillips is a faithful trail walker in his hometown of Three Forks, MT -- sometimes 100 or more miles in a month. His town is just twenty minutes from the spot near Churchill where my sister and family live. We spent some time with them last week for a family wedding and I can relate to the beauty Jim witnesses on his walks. The Gallatin Valley is gorgeous!
I found it just a bit tedious to read chapter after chapter as there was some repetition. This was originally a newspaper column and would work better in that format. Some of the chapters I liked best gave stories from his youth and family history that came to mind as he was walking. If I were to choose a favorite it would be "Not For Love or Money" and tells the story of a 5K he found himself participating in while celebrating Thanksgiving in Idaho Falls. Hey! We actually drove through that town today. Perfect!
