So, this book. How should I start? The author didn't seem to know a full plot for the three books. I didn't read all of them, just to put that out there. I couldn't finish the series even though I paid money for the set. I read the first book, and liked most of it. I liked the mystery about their covens, I would have liked to learn more about them. But instead all we learn is female phyicis go crazy when they are supposed to find their mate, and once they find him they don't go crazy anymore. We learn that the cougar shifters mate for life. That's about it. Which was okay, because I figured we would find out more in later books. But, a big fat no was the answer to that. The author didn't develop the cultures at all. And the personalities were very bland.
On with the rest of what I didn't like. The shared dreams with smell. I would love to know how scent can travel into dreams.

I also don't like the fact that you know that the three books have three brothers, and each brother will end up with his OWN girl. And, knowing that, imagine MY surprise when in the first book two brothers SHARE the girl. I did not like that at all. I didn't like how She was so out of her mind she knew she had to get away, and to do that she practically molested the brother of her mate (before they were mated) and being a male he responded.
I like ménages. but only when they keep it between them. When the author has the main male share his girl, with anyone, and then that person gets his own girl in the next book and the girls hit it off and become friends, that's just wrong.
Besides that, the fact that the evil bitch in the first book, the same one that wanted to kill all three brothers and the main girl, was the main girl in the second book, was screwing Malcolm, and then got together with Kane, that just put me off right there. I didn't read any further, didn't pass go, and didn't collect anything!
I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS BOOK. If you like any of the things i listed, that's fine. But this book had no depth, no path way. She jumped around everywhere.

Shifter Bundle by Eliza Gayle
Featuring Lucas/Kane/Malcom

I’ve read other books by Ms Gayle and most were good but this series didn’t do it for me.

I finished Lucas and it was okay. Lot’s of jumping around in the story and the dialog was a bit choppy which made it difficult to read. Not much back story on the characters so I had a hard time understanding who hated who and why. Example is the Kira’s mother was mentioned a lot and you go a sense that something happened with her life that was bad but what? This detail made Kira not trust others but I don’t know what happened. Kira’s stepfather also is not explained well either. What was he trying to achieve and why? A lot was made of Kira being a Marine but I didn’t feel that it added anything to the story.

I started reading Kane’s story and it was more of the same which made me stop reading. I’m might pick this book up later to continue and finish if off or I might just leave it alone. I dislike not finishing a story especially one I’ve paid dearly for but in this case...

I am Loving this Series

I posted a separate 5 star review for the first book in this trilogy, Lucas. The second book, Kane was just as good, and so was the third book, Malcolm. Basically, the three brothers are black cougars, the strongest in their clan of feline shifters, and thus were guardians of their race. Clan councils for all the supernaturals dictated no mating outside their own species. One by one the brothers discover their true mates are not cougar shifters. Clan politics and power hungry villains conspire to keep the mates apart. What I found interesting was that it was not always clear who the bad guys were and who the good guys were. In some cases, the lines became blurred when we see good guys doing bad things for bad reasons. Great trilogy and I am glad the author decided to continue the series.

I own and have read and reviewed the original books in this series, both singly and in a box set, quite a few years ago. My previous reviews of this book under the original series title BLACK COUGAR from years ago are missing.
I have also reread and reviewed the first few books under the SOUTHERN SHIFTERS title series.
This series has been revamped so many times it is annoying.
I am re-reading the whole series through KU due to newer versions once again.
1 - DIRTY SEXY FURRY - (LUCAS)
Heroine goes from wonderful to weak.
A lot less sex in this newer version which is hard to imagine as it still is 50% off the content of the book.
Still find I have too many questions in regards to plot holes and the whole thing really is one big mixed up mess.
I understand what is happening as I know what is going to happen in the next few books.
Akira start out as this awesome trained marine, psychic powered heroine who saves the hero. She then deteriorates into a helpless, I have to be saved numerous times, woman. Such a pity.
How is Kira, a supposedly trained marine, taken down so many times and how does she have time to be running around the country.
Also, she knows what is happening to her but still is the most stubborn heroine ever written. She would rather put her life at risk than talk things through with Lucas.
Lucas really is not the baddie in this, even though he has to claim Kira without her knowing. He is put into a terrible position due to her not being honest and talking to him.
The whole claiming her whilst she doesn’t know what is happening is still a sore point for me. Yes, it is meant to save her life which is under the death penalty, once again due to her stubbornness but it still niggles me.
One brother goes from a baddie to a goodie so fast we get whiplash, the evil witch is the mate of the other brother who now has to track and kill her.
The council and their archaic beliefs need to be put out to pasture.
2 - MATE NIGHT - (KANE)
Cannot like Lara and feel Kane is being led by his male parts.
Doesn’t really answer many questions left from book one. In reality it leaves one with more questions needing answers.
Lara really had a poor reason for her actions and didn’t actually enact her revenge on anyone, as she was working with Malcolm in book one and is the mate of Kane in book two.
We also have the fact she had sex with Kane’s older brother Malcolm in book one, even though she swore revenge on the black cougars. Doesn’t make sense.
Left with a cliff hanger.
3 - ALPHA KNOWS BEST - (MALCOLM)
Malcolm does nothing to redeem himself in his own book.
He apparently has a mate he abandoned 5 years ago, as she is a Hybrid shifter and wasn’t good enough for him.
In the interim he has tried to hurt his own brothers, had sex with numerous women and basically been a right basket. His sexual behaviour in these newer books is very toned down and only hinted at.
He is terrible in his treatment and verbal abuse of Cheyenne. Blowing hot and cold.
The fact they never have an honest and meaningful talk, only sex, pushes the fact these two really don’t know each other.
When Chey, the abandoned mate, is sent to bring him back, he has the nerve to throw a tantrum when he finds out she carried on with her life and mated someone else.
His behaviour gets worse when a child is then involved.
Good that the council have been outed for the out of touch idiots they are.

A terrific beginning to what is going to be a great series!

4 1/2 stars!

The Southern Shifters Collection was a great start to what is going to be an amazing series. The stories are full of hot dominant shifters, deliciously wicked females that give the men a challenge they may not be ready for, drama, humor, hot and steamy sexual encounters, mystery, and suspenseful twists that will keep you intrigued until the end.

I would definitely recommend this book, series, and fantastic author!

There were 3 stories in this set. I really liked the first 2 but the 3rd story just didn't go as good as it could have. There is a big story line throughout the whole book and the story line flowed very nicely but in the 3rd it just kinda fell flat. With that said I still give it 3 stars. Recommend.

Mates

Each of these shifters finds their mates. One of the shifters and his mate were exiled. They can come back a year to meet with the council. These three shifters were guardians. All were black cougers. So much happens in this box set . It was a great read and highly recommended.

This is for the first book in the bundle, Lucas. I would give it 3 1/2 stars, mostly because of editing. I enjoyed the story, though there are a few questions left to be answered in later books. One problem I did have was the editing, which I'd seen in reviews on Amazon that other people had noticed too. There are some mistakes that are distracting enough to pull you out of the story.

This is for Kane, the second book in the bundle. I would give it 3 stars, because of editing. It seemed like the author kind of jumped right into the middle of the story without explaining quite how the H/h were connected to each other. If someone grabbed the book without reading Lucas, they would be extremely confused during the first quarter at the very least, maybe the first half. Again the editing was pretty distracting, with dialogue from different characters ending up in the same paragraph, so if you weren't paying attention, things could get confusing quickly. But overall, the story was pretty good, once you got past the mistakes. There was a reason that Lara was trying to kill the whole Gunn family, it just took a little patience to find out what that was.

I will update more as I read Malcolm.

The erotica scenes sizzle nicely. But the whole series could have used a content editor. I believe the writer is a pantster (writes by the seat of the pants). Items are introduced when she realized she needed them, but she did not go back and weave them into the story so you feel like a bandaid was applied rather than a whole story skin.

Also to keep things from moving too fast - sometimes the characters make a decision, then backtrack like they never made it, and then remake the decision. Not the normal method for storytelling - but very true to life - so it didn't feel "unreal", but did feel like poor content editing.

The other thing that annoyed me was the poor formatting of the paragraphs for the Kindle format - paragraphs were randomly indented.

With a good content editing and a formating editing, this would be a great erotic series. As it is, the sizzling descriptions make it a good enough read for its genre. (so-so)

3 1/2 STARS.

Finally! I made it through all three books. The stories weren't horrible. In fact at times they were really good. There were quite a few typos which makes me reread the same thing over and over. I guess I'm hoping it will change. It didn't. I have to say even for me there was too much sex. Yeah, I get it, we all get it. Shifters have sex every chance they can. The amount to me was overkill. Some of the scene changes didn't blend well. One paragraph you're here the next paragraph is something altogether different. I won't be reading this author again.

This was a great group of stories. The brothers have been guardians of their clan since their dad died. Now they each have their own challenges that they will have to face. They each will find out they have a mate that they had decided that they were never going to find. Surprise, now if it had just been someone they weren't not supposed to be with. Now that would be enough for most but they also have to get people to quit trying to kill them.

I enjoyed the Gunn brothers stories. They were exciting intense hot romantic murder mysteries. Each of them had to come to the realization that things are not always as they seem. These black cougars had some of what they thought was right proven wrong. They also found out that tradition is not necessarily the proper way to handle some things. Very good read to me. Enjoy I did.

3 brothers with 3 stories all wrapped up into one fantastical book... what could be better then that? Ummmm maybe the fact that they are Shifters. Started a little weak, the next book was pretty good and the third really sexy but too much and not a really likeable lead. A good way to pass the time but not coming back for any more
