A Darkly Funny Story that made Me Laugh because I like Dark Humour

Henry Aimsworth has a Problem He needs to get rid of. His Dissapointing Wife. And Alféar the Dæmon, a creature from another Dimension who can Move across the Planes of Vibrations between Simultaneous Universes, is more than Ready to Help.

Actually He has no choice. Alféar is a Wish Granting Creature because He is Prone to Addictions. "Habits, Conditioned Relexes, Pure Compulsive Behviors," Alféar states as He Chain-Smokes His Third Cigarette in a Row. "I have to Grant You your Wishes!"

And, as a side note, He regrets not getting any Psychiatric Counseling to Break Himself of this Addiction He has for Granting Wishes to Humans.

This Story is an Enjoyable read with a Fun Pseudo-Scientific take on the Whole "Magic Genie" trope.

Sure it's a bit predictable, you just know there's going to be a Twist at the End, but that's part of the Fun. Trying to guess what the Twist is gonna be.

A Recommended Read.

A middle aged man summons a demon to kill his wife and make it appear as if she died of natural causes. After which, the man plans to elope with his lovely young assistant. As always when dealing with a demon, you need to choose your words with great care.

I was compelled to read this short story to get a better feel for the recent podiobook we reviewed for Hacker Public Radio by Lester Del Rey called Bandge of Infamy. I was curious if some of the themes in that story repeated themselves in any other works by del Rey. I do believe there is an interesting hostility towards woman, particularly wives over time.

The story's conclusion was not novel to me at this period, there have been so many similar works since that making the ending somewhat predictable. What I did find unique was the presentation of witchcraft and demons in a more scientific light. That magic was a way of breaching the vibrational barriers between dimensions was very refreshing.

This was a quick read and very enjoyable. I plan to read a lot more by del Rey.

A bit predictable, really dark, and the main protagonist is more like an antagonist. The story takes a spin at the old formula of "be careful what you wish for". I think what made me give the rating that I gave is the fact that the Genie was quite interesting and very reminiscent of Bartimaeus .

I found this book extremely predictable. Since it was written, many more stories have been written similar to it. Remember, karma wins.
