Gerard Hoffnung, born in Berlin in 1925, moved to London in 1939. Although he died at 34 years, he achieved much in his short life. He was an artist, teacher, cartoonist, caricaturist, tuba player, broadcaster, raconteur and popular speaker at the Oxford and Cambridge Unions.
I never realised there were so many emotions a conductor could go through during a piece but Hoffnung demonstrates them fully with his usual amusing illustrations. Particularly amusing is his interpretation of 'Molto diminuendo' and he is far from happy in 'Fortissimo vivacissimo' but that is nothing compared to 'Finale furioso'. Great fun, or should I say Molto divertente!
There's a chance this book might eventually teach me both the Italian language and the basic principles of classical music. Let's see you do that, "The Sun Also Rises."
