The fight for survival is real. You serve-or are preparing to serve-in the spiritually desolate areas of our world. The elements you face each day are intense. What can you do to prepare for the challenges? Dr. Robert Miller presents a preparedness strategy for surviving the "wilderness" of ministry that is helpful for the new and the experienced alike.
Short but powerful. Full of practical wisdom and profound insight. Convicting without condemnation. I was in tears by the second page; it was a message I needed to hear.
The author seemed to encourage the reader to hyper-individualism, constant change, and assuming they were right. The author makes comments against all of these things but the undertones to most of the advice speak plainly enough.
I found some portions helpful and encouraging, but I also didn’t resonate with some portions that felt, to me, like the author used hyper-militaristic language when discussing the realities of spiritual attack. Overall I found some helpful tidbits, but not my favorite book out there on this subject.
This is going on my yearly re-read list. It is exactly what it says it is, a handbook for survival and invaluable to any Christian advancing the Kingdom.
The deeply theological yet extremely practical advice offered here is life-giving nourishment for the souls of the cross-cultural worker. This is a handbook to return to over and over again… it’s on my yearly reading list now.
This is a must-read for every believer who heeds the call of the Great Commission. Whether they are new missionaries or have been in ministry for some time, this book provides practical guidelines in a very uplifting way. When reading it, it is impossible not to become energized spiritually. It uplifts, encourages and provides with tools necessary for survival in the mission field. Highly recommended.
This fantastically inspiring and practical book would benefit any follower of Jesus, not just those in cross-cultural ministry. We have great purpose with God wherever we live, and this collection of testimonies and advice encouraged and invited me into more triumphant life as a soldier of Christ Jesus.
What a great little gem! A mere 100-page book speaks of areas critical for cross-cultural workers. It will be a great gift for anyone preparing to go or on the field.
Writing could be topped up a bit but it has some great points about how to handle yourself and your walk outside of a comfortable environment. Quick, short, and useful read.
This great little book is geared towards those who want to go on cross-cultural missions, particularly those who are planning on living in another country to evangelize. Although this may be the reason the book was written, it is a great little read for any believer as the concepts and truths can apply to any believer in any place and time. Those who implement the practices in this book will certainly grow in the walk with Christ and will become stronger in their faith.
Recommended? - Yes, it is worth the time it took to read.
Beneficial? - Yes, Christians will find this book helpful for their daily walk.
Length? - It is a short book that can be read in a single long sitting but I read it by dedicating about 15 minutes a day until it was finished.
This book was really helpful and I kind of wish I'd read it as soon as I moved to Thailand to do community development work (and then again once or twice more after that). The concepts Miller covers are relevant and practical, though at times he gets a bit abstract, leaving the reader unsure how to apply them to their own life. It's a quick, concise, and easy read. I'd definitely recommend it for any Christians doing cross-cultural work of any kind.
I highly recommend this book for missionaries, even if I disagreed in some small sections. The author has a quirky sense of metaphor that hits in some places and misses in others. The book is organized by topic for easy reference: knowing God, yourself, the enemy, the terrain, your boundaries, and leadership. It offers quick and easy reading that can prompt a lot of introspection and discussion, if you'll allow yourself to be open to his suggestions.
Second time reading. 3.5 stars, good and practical book, but I'm more and more convinced that any book on the life of a follower of Christ should be Scripturally based, and this book is not. This book is strongest when it emphasizes our daily need for Christ and that abiding in Christ should be our number 1 priority in life and ministry.
