Few locals believe Sinclair's wealthy golden boy Martin Avery actually took his own life-or that his beautiful young widow had nothing to do with his death. Well aware of the rumors behind her back, Blaine Avery is focused on managing her late husband's finances and raising her adolescent stepdaughter...until her serene woodland property yields a gruesome discovery. For the second time in six months, Sheriff Logan Quint has been called out to the Avery place, where another corpse has been found. This time, it belongs to a teenage girl who had everything to live for. But if Rosie Van Zandt didn't kill herself...who did? As the once sleepy town reels from the rash of so-called suicides, Blaine regrets the day she ever came home. Only Logan is willing to accept her innocence-or her suspicions. For Blaine is desperate to clear her name, and dead certain somebody intends to destroy it. Somebody who calls her in the dead of night, taunting her with the childhood Ring around the rosy, a pocket full of posey, ashes, ashes, we... All Fall Down
Carlene Thompson is an author of suspense thriller novels.
Her first book, Black for Remembrance, was published in 1990 by Little, Brown and was well received. Her books are suspense novels, often with romantic elements and many take place in Thompson's home state of West Virginia. Her books often feature animals, which she bases on animals she knows in real life.
A well written, fast-paced mystery delivers a lot of suspense in under 300 pages. Nice tight concise plotting and a suspenseful mystery.
Most people in town believe Blaine Avery guilty of murder her husband--though there was not enough evidence for a legal conviction. Still mourning his suicide, she discovers the body of a teen age girl. It's murder--though someone tried to make it look like suicide.
Less than a week later, Blaine discovers a second teen girl killed.
Who is calling and playing music to Blaine at night? Is some one trying to frame her for murder? Why are there so many conflicting stories and people lying? No one seems to beleive Blaine--until it is too late....
A very suspenseful tale, with lots of good characterizatio; and lots of clues and false leads. Violence is present but not graphic; language is also not graphic. A suitable mystery for older teens--over 16, and for any adult readers seeking a good classic puzzle mystery.
WOW! Great characters and a plot that kept me guessing until the end. Carlene Thompson covers all three major parts of story-telling with well-developed characters, a unique plot, and a pace that moves the story along at an exciting pace.
I recently picked this up from a Friends of the Library book sale. Forgetting that the book was published 28 years ago, I kept yelling at the characters to use their cell phones! Ms Thompson used every trite trick expected of the slasher suspense movies, but I won't be more specific 'cause I don't want to give anything away. That being said, this is one of the best books I've read in quite some time. Those trite tricks of the slasher movies? They work very well in this novel, move the action along and keep the reader at a high level of suspense. Not only had I never read any of Carlene Thompson's novels before, but I have to admit I had never heard of her. I'm now going after the rest of her novels.
When I first started reading this book I thought to myself, "this is quite corny", but then realized that it was written in 1993. A murder mystery with several likely suspects keeps you guessing. Good story overall.
Maybe it was the translation, but I didn't think this one was well written at all. Would still have given 3 stars if it weren't for the ridiculous conclusion.
Intrigante e inquietante soprattutto.
Weer wijzen beschuldigende vingers in Blaines richting. --- Boekinformatie: Uitgeverij: Areopagus ISBN: 90.6493.134.8 255 pagina's; Paperback
I believe this was one of her very first books, if not THE first. The quality of the writing seemed to be uneven, and it did seem to improve as it went along. I plan to try another of her books eventually.
The thing that bothered me most was that it seemed "obviously" written by a woman. All the characters appeared to be in love with someone, and only a couple of older, unattractive women had no love interest. I can enjoy a good romance or a good mystery, but this tried to do both and ended up not doing either very well.
I didn't guess "whodunit" until the very end, so in that respect it was a success.
The story: Blaine Avery has is under a cloud of suspicion since the suicide of her husband Martin. Was it suicide? The sheriff doesn't think so. Blaine returns to her home to raise her 17 year old stepdaughter, Robin. Blaine starts finding more bodies and it appears someone is setting her up. Only the sheriff, Logan Quint, believes her. So is it a suicide and other murders OR all suicides?
Overall a very good suspense story. Every time I thought I had the killer figured out, I was wrong. I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and suspenseful.
OMG!! This book was so damn good. I have read mystery books where I have a couple of ideas on who did it and in the end is one of those people, BUT, OH NO not in this book. I couldn't believe it was who it was, had not a clue. It was great. Great plot, great suspense, great characters right down to the dog Ashley. I LOVED IT!
Lots of suspense in the twists and turns. I will definitely read more from Carlene Thompson. One detail kept throwing me, though. This book was written in the early 90's, but the music the teen-agers listened to was from the early 80's, not to mention that one girl used a record and record player for her accompanying music in the talent show try-outs.
Very good suspense story. Every time I thought I had the killer figured out, I was wrong. I never guessed who it was. Carlene Thompson writes very good suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat to the last page of the book.
I really enjoy this author. Her books are very suspenseful. They are not at all redundant. They keep you guessing, literally until the last couple of pages. They are also very quick reads.
If you are looking for all of the above, I would highly recommend her books.
What a murder mystery! I had a hard time putting the book down. And a surprise ending--does it get any better than that? It was very suspenseful, and just when I was sure I had it figured out, the story took a turn that changed my mind.
I read this book upon a recommendation because i was told that the author was from around my area and wrote about it in her stories. I don't usually read mysteries. This was pretty good. Of course, I had no idea who the killer was and would never of guessed the actual killer.
This was a pretty good book. I found it a little bit slow at times and it wasn't always a big page turner for me but the mystery was good and there were plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing. I will admit I did not see the murder reveal coming.
Per chi non la conoscesse lei è una scrittrice di romanzi gialli con molto talento di cui ho tutti i romanzi pubblicati (e letti tutti tranne l'ultimo). https://www.vivereinunlibro.it/2019/1...
Kept me guessing til the end! I had a little bit of a hard time connecting with the characters, but overall a good read. Will defininitely check out some of her others.
