About the author

Evelyn Reed (1905–1979) was an American communist and women’s rights activist.

In January 1940, she traveled to Mexico to see the exiled Russian Revolutionary Leon Trotsky and his wife Natalia Sedova. There, at the house of Trotsky in Coyoacán, Reed met the American Trotskyist leader James P. Cannon, leader of the Socialist Workers Party (United States). Reed joined in the same year, and remained a leading party member until her death.

An active participant in the Women's liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Reed was a founding member of the Women’s National Abortion Action Coalition in 1971. During these years she spoke and debated on women’s rights in cities throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, the United Kingdom and France.

Inspired by the works on women and the family by Friedrich Engels and Alexandra Kollontai, Reed is the author of many books on Marxist feminism and the origin of the oppression of women and the fight for their emancipation. Some of the most notable works by Reed are: Problems of Women’s Liberation, Woman’s Evolution: From Matriarchal Clan to Patriarchal Family, Is Biology Woman’s Destiny?, and Cosmetics, Fashions, and the Exploitation of Women (with Joseph Hansen and Mary-Alice Waters.)

She was nominated as a candidate for President of the United States for the Socialist Workers Party in the United States presidential election, 1972. On the ballot in only three states (Indiana, New York, and Wisconsin), Reed received a total of 13,878 votes. The main candidate for the Party was Linda Jenness, who received 37,423 votes.

"The woman question can only be resolved through the lineup of working men and women against the ruling men and women. This means that the interests of the workers as a class are identical; and not the interests of all women as a sex. Ruling-class women have exactly the same interest in upholding and perpetuating capitalist society as their men have. The bourgeois feminists fought, among other things, for the right of women as well as men to hold property in their own name. They won this right. Today, plutocratic women hold fabulous wealth in their own names. They are completely in alliance with the plutocratic men to perpetuate the capitalist system. They are not in alliance with the working women, whose needs can only be served through the abolition of capitalism. Thus, the emancipation of working women will not be achieved in alliance with women of the enemy class, but just the opposite; in a struggle against them as part and parcel of the whole class struggle."

اِوِلین رید اعصابش خرد است از مردم‌شناسان و زیست‌شناسان؛ کسانی که می‌گویند چون زن رحم دارد و عضلانی نیست، پس جایش در خانه است و کارش زایش. می‌گوید که این القا برای سرکوب مبارزاتِ علیه تبعیض جنسیتی است. روزگاری مادرسالاری حاکم بود و چه کارها که زنان انجام نمی‌دادند - «هم زاد و ولد و هم بزرگ کردن بچه‌ها در ابتدا کارهای اجتماعی بودند و هم زنان آن را انجام می‌دادند و هم مردان. فقط در هنگام سقوط کمون مادرسالار و سقوط روابط مساوات‌طلبانه آن برای زن و مرد بود که زنان از تولید اجتماعی محروم و به بردگی خانگی گمارده شدند. در تقسیم کار جدید، مردان کنترل را در دست گرفتند.» پس «همگام با با پیدایش اقتصاد نوین مبتنی بر کشاوزی و دامپروری، تقسیم کارهای جدید پا به عرصه‌ی وجود گذاشتند و جایگزین تقسیم کار پیشین، مبتنی بر جنسیت، شدند.»
جزوه‌ی خانم رید آنقدر روان است و ساده‌فهم که ایده‌آلی است از همان نوشتن برای همه‌ی اقشار - جزوه‌هایی که به همه‌ی زنان مبارز --در هر طبقه‌ای-- آگاهی می‌دهد و مختص طبقه‌ی متوسط سفید نیست.

while its pretty dense, its only 34 pages long so this is a fairly fast read. reed dismantles the theory that women have always been oppressed from the dawn of time based on their biology and asserts that class society and sexual divisions of labor are responsible for sexism, not womans biology. its a far more compelling argument than 'you can never escape your destiny as a woman' since the entire point of socialism is that it argues that another world is actually possible. since most radical feminists propose that biology is, in fact, destiny, the ideology is directly at odds with socialism--how can anyone change the world if male biology always gives men an advantage?

luckily reed comes with anthropological and historical evidence that men and women in matriarchal communal societies have fairly different relationships with one another than they do under class society. again, its a dense read but well worth going through.

این کتاب اصالت زن رو بیان میکنه،به موضوعی می پردازه که روزانه ما بااون برخورد می کنیم و چشم بر روی واقیت می بندیم.
همه ما به خوبی می دانیم که چقدر وابسته به مادر و خانواده او هستیم ولی کمتر زمانی این سوال برای ما ایجاد میشه که جرا؟
علت وابستگی ما به مادر و خانواده اش چیست ؟
این کتاب قدرت فراموش شده زن ها را یادآوری می کنه،با خوندنش اینطور در میابیم که وضعیت زن امروز از خود ناآگاهی اوست.
به طور خلاصه میشه این کتاب رو به همه زنان تقدیم کرد که به دنبال هویت انسانی خودشون می گردن.

این کتاب اولین رید الآن که در سال ۲۰۲۲ هستیم، پژوهش نسبتاً قدیمی و ابتدایی‌ای محسوب می‌شه. اما همچنان به‌نظرم نکات مهمی داره و خوندش خالی از لطف نبود. نثر روانی هم داره.

Age old discourse that is unfortunately not yet out-dated... The essay deals with the chauvinist assumption that nature is responsible for female "inferiority". Reed argues that it is the patriarchal class society that has forced women to "preoccupy herself with her maternal functions at the expense of the higher values developed in the course of social life." I for one fail to see how being the reproducing half of human nature could be inferior; but being cut off from a social life in the process could definitely be considered a handicap. And, yes, this came about by the introduction of the patriarchal class society and it's worship of the 'nuclear' family.

بصفتي من أنصار تحرير المرأة لم أجد الكتاب بالمستوى المطلوب من حيث تعرضه لحل الإشكالية القائلة بأن مساواة المرأة بالرجل غير ممكنة نتيجة الطبيعة الفسيلوجية لجسم المرأة... نعم؛ الكاتبة إستطاعت الإلمام ببعض الجوانب المتعلقة بالموضوع وبإحكام ولكنها سقطت في متاهات من الإستدلالات السطحية والأمثلة غير الموفقة ... أما بخصوص الترجمة العربية فهي غير جيدة ويعوزها التدقيق اللغوي والنحوي رغم كون الجودة الطباعية ممتازة وقد حصلتُ على هذه النسخة هدية من الناشر (باثفايندر) مع 5 كتب أخرى وذلك في إحدى معارض الكتب الدولية

مشکل اصلیم این بود که استدلالی نیاورد که چرا تکیه بر امر زیستی برای تبیین امر اجتماعی درست است یا نیست. استدلال‌های زیستیش اما بجا بودند.

افسانه‌ی برتری بیولوژیکی مردها نسبت به زنان آخرین دستاویز نظام مردسالاریه. این کتاب رو بخونید و به رویای احمقانه‌ی کهتری زنان پایان بدید.

. كم كنت احتاج لمثل هذا الكتاب ، هناك العديد من التساؤلات التي كانت تشغل ذهني من قبل ان أتعرف ب إيفلين .🌸 على الرغم من انني لا اعترف و لا أؤمن بأفكار و آراء داروين ، إلا أن موضوع اضطهاد النساء من قبل النظام الأبوي و رأسمالي لسياسات خطيرة مخفيه عن العالم ، قد أدى إلى إضعاف إمكانيات النساء و توجيه جهود الأغلبية على أمور اقل افاقاً و إضعافاً للبدن

استغرقت لقراءته وقت قصير لم أشاء ان تنتهي هذه الرحلة الممتعة 🌸

"What women remain unsure about, however, is whether or not their biology has played a part in making and keeping them the inferior or “second sex.” Such uncertainty is quite understandable in a male-dominated society where not only is history written by those who uphold the status quo but all the sciences are likewise in their hands. Two of these sciences, biology and anthropology, are of prime importance in understanding women and their history. Both are so heavily biased in favor of the male sex that they conceal rather than reveal the true facts about women."

کتابی مختصر از تمام استدلال ها و نظریات خانم رید که در کتاب "تکامل زنان: از خاندان های مادرسالار تا خانواده های پدرسالار" به طور کامل و باجزئیات بیشتری این مطالب رو بیان می کنه. برای من که پیش از این سه گانه تکامل زنان رو که در فارسی در سه کتاب جداگانه "مادرسالاری، برادرسالاری و پدرسالاری" به چاپ رسیده، خوندم، کتاب مطالب جدیدی ارائه نمی کرد. می تونم بگم میشه به عنوان چکیده یا خلاصه ای از اثر مهم تر ایشون از این کتاب مختصر اما به هر حال مفید و روان یاد کرد.
