As the supernatural manifestations become stronger and no cure to the deadly disease can be found, Anya and Jonas must leave Esk in an attempt to seek out answers. Meanwhile, Robyn and Petria are left to fend their hometown from the dangerous monsters that now prowl the streets.
What a wonderful continuation of this series! I am so happy to have read this volume and have found out about it! So great. Spooky, serious, flirty, beautiful art just so very much wonderfulness. Each volume, thus far, has given just the right amount of information and story to tell you what is kind of going on without giving too much information that it becomes bogged down or boring with it. If you already knew what was going on fully there would be no need to read the other volumes. Can not wait to grab the next volume and devour it just like this and the last one!
In the second volume, things start to get real. People are dying in droves, ghosts are real, and Jonas may be in danger.
I enjoyed this second volume more than the first since we move into the real meat of the story. We get to know more about our characters, but the action also ramps up quite a bit. Overall, a stronger volume than the first.
CW: deceased wife/child, gore, guns, institutionalization, medical procedures, mental illness, prostitution (references to), religious extremism, workplace harassment
This volume is a little fuzzier on the overall story arc and gets a bit confusing, but I'm still looking forward to reading the entire series. I like the charming web drawings.
I also have a bit of writer's block at the moment, so pardon the brevity of this review as author Sarah Ellerton certainly deserves better.
I read the five volumes of The Phoenix Requiem in one go, and will review them in one go. My thoughts: A very beautifully illustrated fantasy graphic novel with an intriguing story which started well and kept me reading, but left me feeling a bit confused and let down by the end of it.
I enjoyed how the story progressed, and am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I still like the characters and enjoyed diving deeper into the mysteries'. I also appreciated that not all of the random creepy stuff was just there for shock value, and that the author actually made and effort to explain it.
The creepy stuff was pretty well-done as well. The images weren't gruesome, but the scenes were tense.
However, there's nothing particularly original or great about this story. Again, I look forward to seeing where it goes, but nothing about it was really overly original structure-wise or stood out to me. This is really just a light, enjoyable comic, but also one I might forget about soon. So it's average, but also interesting and entertaining.
There isn't much that I can say that I hadn't already covered in the first review. The artwork is gorgeous. It really encourages me to grab a pad and pencil and start drawing, if only I could. The story continues with more mysterious shades, decaying bodies, and heartbreaking realizations. I'm going to make this review short, so I can hurry and begin the third. The plot thickens as more people decay almost instantly after their death. As Anya and Jonas search for answers elsewhere, Robyn and Petria epically defend their home. I am pleased that there was a little bit more action in this volume.
While not as slow as the first volume, The Phoenix Requiem Volume Two builds on the story of Vol 1 steadily. Personally, I would have preferred to see some battle scenes between the humans and Hellions and/or Shades. I want to know more about Jonas. Why did the spirit say "He is like us"? Is Anya's theory about magic being the underlying cause of the plague correct? What is the connection between the museum curator and Jonas? Would Robyn and Petria find a way to fight and defeat the Shades? Whose name did Armand find in the museum archive? I admit to being intrigued by all these questions! Third volume, here I come!
Reading this online I just keep going and going, I can't help it. I am wrapped up in the story and want to know what happens. The illustrations are fabulous. Ms. Ellerton has skills I can only dream of and combined with the story this book is hard to beat. I will continue reading...
