More of a historical artifact now, i.e., not particularly useful as an actual field guide. The original predates even Peterson. Illustrations are crude by modern standards although they are in color.

The illustrations are gorgeous and the scientific descriptions are in the same language that is used now.

When this book was first published, starlings and barn swallows were still only located near to the East coast and in the almost 100 years since are now to be found in the Great Lakes region.
