I've been teaching the monologue excerpt from Act 2, Scene 2 for a few years now after it was added to the VCE English text list. I finally picked up the whole play and I'm so very glad that I did.
City of Gold is a powerful story set in contemporary Australia amid ongoing crises of racial profiling, police brutality and racism. Meyne Wyatt's writing was utterly compelling and I thoroughly enjoyed this text. Will be re-reading many times, I'm sure.
The blurb on the back sums up the story perfectly: "City of Gold is Meyne Wyatt's howl of rage at the injustice, inequality and wilful amnesia of this country's 21st century."
