An Eagle Among Lions

Rate this book
Summary:
The morning after her and Byleth's wedding, Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg wakes up in her old bedroom in Garreg Mach to discover that she has brown hair, only one Crest, ten happy and healthy brothers and sisters, and a bad habit of sleeping through her professor's lectures. Hubert is unusually cheerful, Byleth teaches the Blue Lions, and nobody has heard of the Flame Emperor. Instead, a figure known as the Hurricane King and his sinister cohort the Death Knight stalk the monastery.

No sooner has Edelgard sought out this new world's Byleth than she finds herself standing in the eye of a storm of continent-spanning conspiracies centered on a young man with snow-white hair — one that will engulf Garreg Mach, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, the Adrestian Empire, and Edelgard's own family as it carries the roaring winds of war across Fodlan. A threat from a past so ancient it predates even Fodlan's oldest and murkiest myths is stirring, threatening to tear time itself asunder — and it may be her only way back home.

I've never written a Goodreads review before, nor left comments on a fanfic... but I cannot stay silent regarding this MASTERPIECE of an accompaniment to my favourite game of all time. After six months and 1.6 million words of devouring this fantastic story, I have finally reached the end - and can proudly say I applauded and exclaimed "bravo!" the moment I did.

I discovered this fic by chance six months ago while bored, and I could never have estimated just how much this story would take its hold on me - and how much it would impact my perception of Three Houses. Dear Author, you have truly created a masterwork, one of which I genuinely consider the definitive sequel to the Crimson Flower Route.

Your characterisation of Edelgard was phenomenal, and I was unprepared for the massive journey she would be taken on, both physically and emotionally. And Ingrid?! Despite being a Blue Lion main myself, I didn't have as much an attachment to her compared to some of the other characters in the house, but after reading this?! You've completely altered my perception of her character for the better . Hilda too! I have a great newfound appreciation for her arc, and her relationships with both Edelgard and Claude were explored with so much depth. All the relationships you portrayed were absolutely fantastic. I adored your exploration of Edelgard and Dimitri's sibling bond, with Edelgard finally gaining closure on how things ended on the Talitain Plains. And as a big Hubert fan (my third favourite in the game after Dimitri and Constance), your portrayal of them was absolutely perfect, and their relationship with Edelgard truly felt unbreakable, not only a devoted retainer but a close friend and confidant (which I always wished was conveyed more in the game, same with Hilda and Claude.)

I love how all the characters were given so much time to shine even if they weren't always as relevant to the key plot. And oh boy, the plot! What started as a simple 'what if' scenario completely evolved into something way deeper that I had never expected! I adore your take on Agarthan and Nabatean lore (promptly adding it to my personal headcanons). You took the missed opportunities of the game and completely nailed them! I cannot believe the fact that Vual is just an OC. He fit seamlessly into both the narrative and into the Time Squad, it was as if he'd been a part of the world all along. All of your original characters felt they belonged, especially Edelgard's siblings.

Ooh and both Thales and Rhea - dear Author, you CERTAINLY know how to write phenomenal antagonists! From the moment Thales enters the story , I just knew that I was in for a deliciously angsty ride. As such a wasted villain in the original game (and a subpar depiction in Three Hopes), your depiction perfectly conveyed how such an diabolical figure would haunt the twin-crested Edelgard. Thales, your plans may have been foiled, but there was one thing you did finally succeed in - becoming an unpredictable and compelling villain, one perfect for the reader to absolutely despise.

You've spoiled me. This fic is everything I could have wished for. You deserve mountains of praise, and I hope more and more Three Houses fans find the fruits of all your hard work. Please, to any FE3H fan who stumbles by this fic - go for it. 1.6 million words, longer than some of the most famous novel sagas in the world, and yet its quality never falters. An unforgettable experience indeed.

P.S. I have no clue why, but this is one of my absolute favourite lines of dialogue:
“Can you make any anagrams out of this?”
“Any?” Constance laughed. “You should add an ‘M’ to that, because we can make many!"

Since Goodreads won't list each entry as their own book, I can't properly input my reading dates of each entry. I am reading on my Kindle so downloaded the ebook versions of this fic. I will enter my read dates and reviews as I go through...

Reading progress:
Book 1: Princess Edelgard and the Mystery of the Hurricane King
Started: 2023.08.07
Finished: 2024.06.03
Stars: 3.5 out of 5 (liked it; enjoyable and fun; thought provoking; exceptionally written)
Review: If you enjoyed your time playing "Fire Emblem: Three Houses" then you will enjoy this first entry in the An Eagle Among Lions series. The characters and story feel right at home with what was established in the game, and they are given new things to do, making an interesting and complex story to eat up. The book ended on such a tense moment and I am excited to continue with the story!
