True love has no brakes. Running Under Caution, Book 1 Denny Clay never had much going for him, until the racing circuit took him out of the trailer park and away from his bigoted family. Luck smiled on him, and now he’s settled down—in the closet—with his crew chief and boyfriend, Sully Price. Though they’re winning races and the fight to keep their relationship secret, Denny can’t shake the feeling he’s going to have to pay up for all this happiness. He never imagined reckoning would come in the form of a rare medical condition that might cost him his career. And maybe Sully too. For once, Sully’s at a loss, with nothing in his fix-everything toolbox designed to repair his broken lover—or stop Denny’s inevitable slide into a black hole of self-loathing. With a little creativity and a few kinky accessories, Sully shifts into overdrive in the race to get Denny turned around. And prays that his stubborn persistence doesn’t drive their love into a ditch. Broken heroes, hot sex, and one man’s hardcore determination to keep his lover in one piece.

Drop me a line, please! If you're looking for a book for donation or a blog post from me, I'm usually cool with that.
Are you going to write a sequel to Some_Book_You_Wrote?
The up front answer is no, unless the book cover indicates that it's part of a series. If there's going to be a sequel to a book, you'll know once I've signed the contract.
Who is this Dianne person?
Only the light of my life and all that rot. She e-sides here: http://www.foxwrites.com/ Without her, you wouldn't see much from me at all, not even the books that don't have her name on the cover.
Do you read your email?
All the time. I think the question you want is do I answer my email? Occasionally. Badly. I'm a terrible, terrible emailer.
You're reading X books at once?!
Only occasionally at once. I can read two books at the same time, but I get dizzy. Mostly, I just switch books depending on my mood. It's unusual for me to have less than four on the go at a time.
Do you read reviews of your books?
No, sorry! I'm here, yes, but I prefer not to read reviews (no matter how lovely they are) because once a book has left my hands and is available to the readers, my relationship to it changes. It's all grown up. :) I have a clutter of booklings to nurture so they will join the others on your shelves.
Will you read/review my book?
Sorry, but no. There are a number of reasons for this but the biggest is—I suck at doing these things. I'm a horrible procrastinator. I get wound up and then blank out what I'm supposed to do. My ADHD goes galumphing through my head like a bull in a china shop, wrecking everything.
I'm a writer and you hated/loved my book!
I'm sure you're a lovely person, either way. Please have one or both of: "I'm sorry!" or "You're welcome!"
Can I be excused now?
Of course you can! Thanks for reading.

4.5 stars because we never got the sequel

Damn it, I knew I shouldn't have read this knowing Anah Crow isn't around anymore. This ended in a HFN with an obvious road to HEA and it is supposed to be part of a series and we obviously didn't get one.

Regardless, this was fucking hot and full of passion. I loved it and miss Anah Crow with the power of a thousand suns.

NTS: See Gigi's review. This ends with a HFN and though first book of a series, there seems to be no other book forthcoming according to Gigi's review.

Denny is a sprint car driver. Quick to race, quick to temper. He has risen above his trailer trash roots, and is gaining a foothold in the racing world. He is a private man, quietly afraid to let anyone know the real him.

Sully is a great mechanic - can fix anything, make anything better. Tall and masculine, a real man's man, he's part of Denny's pit crew. Takes care of Denny's car, his engine. And his heart.

When a wreck causes more damage than anyone knows, Denny is faced with a harsh new reality. Will the damage done to Denny leave him able to race again? Or will the damage to his relationship with Sully be damaged the worst?

This book was SUCH a great surprise. I expected a book about two racing guys who hook up, have hot sex and move on with each other after a racing accident. But this sensitive, insightful and very real book sat me back on my heels with its depth.

Anah Crow and Dianne Fox have created two beautiful, flawed, simple and just...wonderful characters with Denny and Sully. Denny is all thorns and tight sharp corners and shutters, so scared. Scared of not being able to drive again. Of losing his home. Of losing Sully.

And Sully. Such a strong and understanding man. Sure of himself. But at the core, so very vulnerable and loving. The perfect partner for a man like Denny. Someone who can take the fear and darkness and pain, respect and acknowledge it and help Denny carry the load.

And together, they can face anything.

"The shadow that was always over everything was old and threadbare, letting in some light."

This book is like that - a ray of sunshine, spreading light and warmth when least expected. Ms. Crow and Ms. Fox have done good (as we Southerners say).

Re-read: Apr/19

Whoa. I have no idea what I was reading the first time around. I still had issues with Denny and how he had issues with being gay, but I liked that he grew as a character. Sully is so understanding and caring, and just wants to make sure that Denny has the best care and life he can have. The two of them actually talked things out, instead of letting them fester until they drove themselves apart.

Denny is a race car driver, and Sully is his crew chief, and the two of them have been in a secret relationship for an undisclosed amount of time. (I got the feeling it was several years.) Denny is in a horrific wreck, but walks away. That night, though, he ends up in the hospital with delayed symptoms, and ends up not being able to race. If he's not careful, he might never be able to walk again, let alone race.
Sully will do anything for Denny. He completely understands where Denny is coming from with regards to his feeling about being gay, even if that isn't how Sully feels. When it turns out that Denny isn't doing so well alone, Sunny takes a job in the next town over so that he can be there for Denny every day.

This is a re-read for me, and my rating is a heck of a lot different this time around. (I only rated it 1 star last time.) While I still didn't like Denny and his self hatred, I could see how far he had come (through Sully's eyes) in terms of his acceptance, and where he was going to go in the future.
There is such love and caring between Sully and Denny, and they were such big characters, that you don't really notice that there are very few secondary characters. I really, really liked the fact that they were there for each other no matter what, and that they talked things through, even though neither of them were really fond of talking. But still, a lack of communication did not do them in.
There was a little BDSM in this, but nothing really heavy or hardcore. My only big issue this time around was how abrupt the ending was.

1 star
synopsis:
denny and sully are a closted couple. denny is a race car driver and sully is his crew chief. denny has an accident while driving and walks away from the accident. later that evening, he collapses in pain and goes through extensive surgery on his leg to repair what is wrong. denny keeps pushing sully away during the healing process.

what i liked: the book was well edited and had interesting characters. denny and sully were well drawn, the writing was well done, but i just couldn't get into the book. i liked the premise.

what i didn't like: i honestly don't know why i couldn't get into this book. sometimes you meet people that you don't like and you can't say why you don't like them; that's what it is like for me with this book. i was asking "really? honestly?" by the second chapter and it never got getter for me.

I really wanted t olike this. I was really looking forward to it - I had it on my TBR long before the release date adn I kept checking to see if I could buy it yet. And it started out really good; I thought I was going to really like it. But then it just... died.

This is not a bad book. It's just a long, monotonous book. There is some character progression that happens, but it's slow, and gets dragged out way too long. And there's no real plot outside of that. At some point, I just don't really care anymore.

At first I really liked that Denny and Sully were kind of backwoods kind of guys, but by about the halfway point I could not stand their hick accents anymore. And there's just way too much sex. I discovered after I bought it that it started its life as a series of shorts published by Torquere, so it makes sense that each story would have a sex scene but it's too much when compiled into one novel. That also contributed to the lack of plot.

I got to the 75% mark and stopped there. I hate to get that far and not get a "read date" to show for it, but there you go.

Denny and Sully are faced with serious life changing events in the book; there are life threatening illnesses, sick family members, and the issues Danny has with being gay and people finding out.

Sully is the man everyone dreams of having, a man to take care of you when you’re sick and love you for better or worse, he’s also the man to anticipate when you need a good spanking. With Sully’s strength the couple prevails through all, besides if anything can take your mind off an injury it’s some bondage play with your lover. Sully might just be one of my favorite male characters ever; I want a Sully of my very own!!

I've really enjoyed work by these authors before, so I was sorry to be disappointed by this book. I couldn't quite put my finger on why I was underwhelmed until I read that the chapters were originally published as short stories, then revised into a whole for this book. I think this explains why I felt that elements of each chapter were repetitious and that while there was character and plot development, it was both limited and halting, as issues emerged and were resolved within each chapter. I enjoyed the beginning, but began to lose interest mid-way through and was skim-reading by the final chapter.

"Pit Road" tells the story of boyfriends Sully a mechanic and Denny a driver. The book is about an established couple and if that is something you do not like, I couldn't really recommend this story to you. In my opinion not all authors can write established character, they are very hard to write and when done well can be amazing. Unfortunately for Crow and Fox they didn't develop a very good story.

Sully and Denny are in the closet, mostly because Denny still has that fear factor going on for him. Things are great until a serious crash ends Denny's driving career. Now, I have issues when authors write about injuries and disabilities because they are ALWAYS plot devices to cause angst. In essence if the couple are not having some sort of drama the story becomes boring and that is what I felt with this book.

Now, if we look at Denny I think he was a young character(mid-twenties but do not quote me on that I do not want to give false information); he already had a lot of issues about himself. He was young, wanting a career in a fast-paced and macho environment, family hated him, had issues about his own sexuality and so forth. His injury comes right of the bat and we see him struggling with his new life and how he feels very insecure with his relationship with Sully.

To be frank it was all rather tedious and the prose was pretty much all dialogue; which I despise. The characters spoke with an accent or for better words a certain style from where they were from. I am not sure, but it felt clunky and rather irritating to read.

Denny was very insecure after being injured and whilst I didn't feel very sympathetic towards him (I didn't like him), at least he was more realistic than Sully. Sully was officially the bread-maker of the family, and he was always positive and sweet and seemed like the sun shone out his backside. I get it. One character is volatile and self-destructing because of a severe injury and Sully was the saviour, but he was like a male version of a Mary Sue - a Mark Smith if you'll have. Then because he is such a fantastic person he gets hit on by a random character which sends Denny into another tail-spin.

Overall, it just wasn't well written and if you're going to re-release something that was once published before, you'd hope the upgraded product would be better. I'm actually very surprised that Samhain released this book, their M/M book are very polished the very least even if you don't enjoy them. The writing, the characters and the language was all messy for me. It all read awkward the couple weren't convincing together and the mass hysteria of the book bordered the soap-land area.

ETA: The BDSM in this book was beyond. I mean...seriously I understand that is an area both authors write and great, but seriously you don't need to shove it into every book. It started with a swing and ended with me just giving up. I mean some people may have enjoyed it, but hand on heart would not understand how anyone could.

3.5 stars, maybe? Not sure.

I really liked the characters and I learned something new, which is always a good thing. Anah Crow and Dianne Fox are fantastic authors and I really enjoy their work. I definitely want to read more about the characters, although I guess I'm at a wait-and-see about the overall arc of the story.

Denny and Sully are likable characters and it's obvious they love each other. I find it interesting (in a good way) that they recognize that even love wouldn't have saved their relationship. That while the accident was bad, it did allow them to focus and help cement their relationship. Denny recognized that the issues he's dealing with needed to be addressed.

Sully and Denny seemed to be fitting into a D/s relationship, but it doesn't seem forced. It's more of Denny needing some release or grounding and Sully providing that for him. As Denny and Sully explore their relationship, the more this becomes apparent. Although, it doesn't seem as if Sully needs to be in control, he's just willing to do anything to help Denny. The authors do handle the interactions very well.

I'm not terribly familiar with racing, is it a truly homophobic sport? It seemed that both characters were terrified of being found out... just an observation, but it seemed paramount that no one know.

While I'll definitely read the next book in the series, I sincerely hope it's not one of those never-ending series some authors are good for.

3.5 - Sully and Denny are really good together. At first the story had all the earmarks of a complete fucked up angst fest with miscommunication, cheating and immature behavior. And guess what, it did not happen. While Denny had his moments, this story was well done and you could not help but really cheer for the two of these guys to pull through and for Denny to get his self pitying head out of his ass. (I am being harsh here. Denny's cards were stacked deep against him and he was after all only 25) Sully is a fantastic presence and really gets Denny enough to stick it out, be mature and really take the slow road to listen and understand Denny.

There is a lot in this story to set up Denny and Sully for failure - being in a traditionally homophobic profession, Denny is in his first gay relationship and a horrible accident - all typically recipes for our mains to blow it with each other. But we get something worth saving in this story.

My only real issue aside from Denny being just this side of annoying, was the abrupt ending. There was a slow build to their story and then it was as if the writers stepped on the gas to finish the last lap as quickly as possible. Well I hope they were happy because they won the race at the expense of having the turtle be successful.

3.5 Stars. I really loved the two heroes of this one. I rarely read m/m where the heroes are already together when the book starts, and this was both a plus and a minus for this particular book. It worked because we got to see their relationship tested by Denny's accident, and we got to see him basically grow up and into his relationship with Sully, and we saw him accepting himself as a gay man.

The minus of their togetherness is I felt like I was reading a sequel, rather than a first book. There is a lot of back story given about the early days of their relationship, and with Denny's reluctance to admit his feelings because of his job in the race car circuit. It would have made a fantastic story in itself, and made both characters even more well-rounded.

And a caveat for folks who don't like a lot of sex: there is a lot. The story was originally published as separate shorts (which I didn't know until about five minutes ago), so there's sex in every chapter. It's hot, well-written sex, but there's a lot of it.

An intense relationship story with essentially no outside storyline. Instead of a more traditional rise to a crisis and resolve format, this was more of a spiral. The same issues kept coming up, in various forms, through the whole story until they mostly had them worked out. With no big crisis at the end of the book, if felt a little anti-climactic, although you are left with a feeling that Denny and Sully are going to make it. They did most of their communicating and working things out through sex, so there was a lot of sex in the story. By the 2/3 point I was mostly skimming those scenes. There was plenty of variety, between working around Denny's injuries and the introduction of some kink into their sex lives. But it just got to be too much.

It will never be one of my favorites, but it was worth reading.

This was a very interesting read. It was a constant battle for me between wanting to hug Denny or shake the stuffing out of him in frustration. At times I couldn't understand how Sully put up with it all.

A few little niggles prevented this from being a 5 star read (and no, the frustration wasn't one of them). I honestly can't recall there being any mention made of ages in the book, but more than a third in suddenly it seemed that there was a fair difference in age...but never truly clarified. And add to that, that suddenly at times Sully would refer to Denny as 'my boy' and it became even more of a annoying thing to have missed. Also the ending was quite abrupt, which isn't something I'm happy about either, but I hope that this gets corrected by the next book!

But even with these complaints, I really enjoyed this book.

This book was nothing but a tiny bit of plot and a whole lot of sex, where the little bit of plot that was introduced was never resolved one way or another.
There were several times in this book that I found myself skipping ahead, because it was just another pointless sex scene that came out of nowhere and made no sense as to why it was happening in the first place.
If PWP is your thing, then, yes - I recommend this book. But if you want character development with a good story line where the sex/intamcy actually makes sense and is an intrigal part of the story, then this book is not for you.

Meh! I felt like this book should have been better than it was. It in the past these writers have turned my brain into pudding....in a very good way. This book had the potential to do that but something went wrong. I felt like I was missing the back story of Denny and Sully. I kept wondering if there was a novella out there that I didn't know about that went deeper into thier history. This story seems jumpy at times, almolst as if the writers just sort of gave up the ghost and moved on to the next chapter.

2.5 stars. I usually adore these authors; Slow Bloom and Uneven are among my all-time favorites. That being said, this story was pleasant enough but lacked the spark of some of their other work. It felt a little aimless and disjointed, and I wish it had more of a focus. Additionally, the reader is dropped right into the main characters' already-formed relationship, and I felt that the sparse background knowledge really prevented me from fully connecting with them. I'm curious as to how the series will develop from here.

For some reason this didn't capture me quite as much as other Crow & Fox's books have.

I liked the story and the main characters a lot, but...something was missing for me. I wish I could've given it more stars.

Not a bad book, just missing the magical "thing" I've come to expect from these authors.

Ends @91%. Different from the norm, as these two guys are already in a committed relationship from the start of the book. All the tension comes from Denny recovering from a career ending race car crash. While trying to come to grips with being gay, and what that means outside of his relationship with Sully.

I loved seeing Denny's growth and the development of the relationship. Their love for each other was beautiful and inspiring. I just wish it had been a little longer so we could see him get back into racing (or not). Maybe a sequel?

The story felt kinda abstract in the beginning, slow in the middle and chopped at the end. But I love these authors and the characters were really enjoyable even if the pacing felt kinda weird.

The dialect used in Pit Road became grating after a few chapters and one of the main characters uses the term 'sugar' so many times for his partner that I am amazed the boyfriend didn't get diabetes.
