This captivating audio book brings together devotional insight, scientific thought, and magnificent images of the universe. The psalmist sang that the “heavens declare the glory of God” (19:1). Throughout this stunning audio, Louie Giglio and Matt Redman join in that very same song—noting just how powerfully the wonders of the cosmos can speak to us of the majesty and mercy of our Maker.
I grabbed this off my shelf, where it has been sitting for almost a year, because I needed something to read every day. I needed something to use as a devotional to really inspire my relationship with God. That was half an hour ago. I couldn't stop reading this. It pulled me in and I was so in awe of the things this book was telling me.
In short, this book uses the universe to explain God and how he's in our lives. It makes you feel small, insignificant, and alone until it turns it all around by pointing out that God is searching for you and LOVING you even though the universe is that big. We are significant in his eyes. We are never alone. It was such a heart-felt message and I want others to read this book if they're struggling with their Christian walk because this is such a short, yet meaningful book.
I recently read the book Indescribable by Louie Giglio & Matt Redman in preparation for teaching on the bigness of God. The book talks about the glory of God as seen in the beauty of the universe. Initially I was worried it would just be a retelling of the Louie Giglio message (dvd) called How Great is Our God, but it wasn’t at all. Giglio mentions the four stars from his message, but this is all new material.
I purchased the soft cover edition of this book, but I wish I had purchased the hardcover. Throughout the entire book are pictures of stars, galaxies, the universe…and although still impressive in black and white, the full color photo’s would definitely have a far greater impact.
This book is a quick read primarily due to the number of photo’s in it and some pages with a singular quote on it, but it’s not a shallow book. In fact about half way through the book, in trying to comprehend the numbers of how huge the universe it and conversely how small I am, I literally felt a bit dizzy and overwhelmed. I think this is the greatest part of the book, that it creates a sense of awe. I was just continually blown away as I read it.
The use of photo’s, numbers, quotes from astronomers, and scripture is outstanding. This is a very well balanced approach to examining God through His creation.
If you are interested in astronomy or you’re just looking to have your view of God expanded, this is the book for you. I honestly don’t know how someone could read this book and not end up in utter awe of God.
“If God is indescribable, where does that leave us? It leaves us walking more humbly than we’ve ever walked before-bowed at the thought of such a mighty and mysterious God (p. 47).”
This book isn't long. I really enjoyed this book that part science, part worship of God. As a person who loves astronomy, this was perfect. Only sad thing? We have a lot of clouds in the Texas skies right now so I couldn't go out and star at the stars when I was done.
Breathtaking space photography combine with expansive prose and focused scriptures to make the case that we have neither the language nor the thought processes to get a grasp of how big the universe really is.
However, it goes on to remind readers that God, who effortlessly spoke the universe into existence and calls all the stars by name, cares so much for His children that He became one of us — humbled Himself to live on this isolated planet — to save us.
Indescribable: Encountering the Glory of God in the Beauty of the Universe was a really great book. I found it very inspirational, all the facts that leave evolution in the dust! I read this book as an eBook (the first ebook I think I have ever read) because it was being offered for free on Matt Redman's Facebook Page. As an eBook I found it hard to read (That explains why I took so long :D).
I would recommend it to anyone who is critical of the bible, and anyone who wants to know or be reminded of how great God is!
Indescribable is a beautiful call to worship the Lord of the Universe. Fantastic photos from the Hubble and other incredible telescopes coupled with facts and figures about the size and amazing details about the stars and other heavenly bodies. But in each short chapter, this magnificence is put into perspective: as indescribable the wonders of God's creation are, there is something even more incredible. The Creator who brought this unbelievable universe into existence also created each and every one of us in His own image. He knows us inside and out, and more than that, He loves us with a passion beyond belief. More fantastic than the unbelievably fantastic universe He created is this: the Lord and Creator of all this majesty humbled Himself to come to earth, to take our sins on His sinless body, and died a tortuous death so that we can be cleansed of our sins to live with Him in eternity. That is incredible, fabulous, magnificent...indescribable!
Reading this book on my IPod really failed to do it justice, giving me a somewhat limited view of the spectacular photos showcasing the wonders of God's creation in space. Despite this, I enjoyed this book greatly and was tremendously encouraged by the authors' words and by the thought that even though God created such a wondrous and complex universe, He still cares about me.
Just like the DVD this book was amazing this provides more in depth perspective in God vastness and all he's created. After reading this book I've realized I need to stop making God "small" and see the big picture and the plans he has for my life. I really encourage everyone to read this as it helps our finite minds to be able to get a glimpse of an infinite God who's indeed indescribable.
Connecting wonder of creation (namely astronomy) with wonder of God and why it should cause us to worship. Bit repetitive (universe and the sun is big) and shallow on biblical depth, but the one chapter on us being a moon--unable to emit light but can only reflect light of the SON-- is insightful and worth the whole book.
If you need to be reminded of the Majesty of the Lord, this book will bring you there. It is just a scratch but it still lovely and a good place to be. The majesty of the Lord, compells you just as it did King David to be a man after God's own heart.
I loved this quick read with fun facts sprinkled throughout. What a great reminder of how amazing our God is! "The moon is the perfect size to contribute to a habitable Earth. If the moon were larger, it would cause Earth to tilt so far on its axis that the side facing the sun would experience unbearable heat while the opposite side of Earth would know perpetual subzero winter. As it is, the moon is just the right size to cause Earth to tilt at a very acceptable 23.4 degrees, bringing both winter and summer to the planet." That's just one out of so many more astounding facts found in the book.
This is a thought-provoking read - full of amazing facts.
This is even though I'm perhaps not the target audience - I've loved space since I was young and therefore there wasn't much that was new to me. The only other downside is the black and white photos in the paperback edition - they really don't do justice to the incredible photos. If you can, get the colour hardback version.
What never gets old though is the concept of the bigness of God - it's something that no matter how much it's hammered home, our brains just really can't grok it - you know, really comprehend it - in the same way a child can't really comprehend what it's like being a parent.
4.5 - “The statistical probability that organic structures and the most precisely harmonized reactions that typify living organisms would be generated by accident is zero.” Ilya Prigogine, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, quoted in Indescribable
“God is big, but He’s not too big to miss you in the crowd. In this massive ocean of cosmic dark, you are not alone, or unnoticed.… God knows everything that’s true about you, and He loves you anyway. You are His offspring, His creation, His idea.” Louie Giglio, Indescribable
My best praise and worship times are often after I've contemplated the wonder of the Universe. Therefore, this book was very inspiring. However, it only warrants four stars since the black and white photos do little to capture the subject's true splendor. In the back, they advertised a full-color illustrated edition that looks fabulous. Maybe I'll search for that one if I feel like reading this again.
A good book. it was short and enjoyable. I think from an understanding of the universe I preferred Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. Read through a biblical lens that book just leaves you in awe of who God is. This book does the same thing but is a bit more direct in applying a Biblical lens to the book. I enjoyed it. I am curious about trying to read through it with my kids, I think they might enjoy it. Solid 3/5 stars.
Louie Giglio and Matt Redman have collaborated on an awe inspiring journey through space to remind us of the Glory of God. Through beautiful pictures of stars, galaxies and other cosmic bodies in the universe, they remind us of how wonderful a Creator we have...the Designer of the starts who knows the name of EVERY star in the sky also knows your name. After reading this book, I have a renewed appreciation for the wonders of God's creation and give Him glory!
Amazing is the handiwork of God! Sometimes we need to be reminded how mighty and powerful He is, but also that despite all of that He knows each of us intimately.
As powerful as the content is, this isn't an overwhelming volume. The chapters are just long enough, but not so long so they can't be read in a single sitting. I would recommend it highly.
What an amazing way Giglio makes you see how small you are in a universe created by a grand God, and the love her has for us to make us into this world!!! You really get the sense of the grand universe we live in by seeing the creation of different parts of the galaxy and the strong hand of the Creator who made it.
The chapters are fairly short, simple and aim to lift your eyes up in wonder, interspersed with amazing photos of stars, nebulas, and galaxies. It is a beautiful large format book which makes full use of that big double page spread to showcase the stunning photos of the cosmos.
Worth reading and perusing slowly. I took my time and read it just on weekends over a year.
This is a book that you would find on a Christian’s coffee table that thinks they are people of science. It’s text is boring, and doesn’t really dig into creating a narrative that the Christian God could be the cause of certain events, like the Big Bang. But the visuals are very stunning and this book will be kept as an inspiration for painting.
Interesting read. Matt and Louie present compelling examples and spectacular pictures to help convey the vastness and beauty of God's work. Their passion for the "heavens" is evident throughout.
It was a quick read. It offered both mind blowing scientific facts and the relating of those facts to the greatness of God and our place in the cosmos. While I might not be able to remember the numerous facts, the wonder will remain with me.
I found this a fascinating read. It was a combination of astronomy fats with references to the wonder of God's creation. I didn't know how they were going to express this, but it was done in such a way that gave me pause for thought. A good book for those who are 'searching'.
A quick read with amazing pictures of the universe from a variety of sources. While science is not my thing, this pastor and musician gave me a compelling picture of the universe, my place in it, and the glory of the Creator of it all.
I really erred not realizing this was published as a coffee table book with stunning pictures. The intended wonder-inducing impact was definitely diminished but me listening versus reading and viewing.
This book gives us a glimpse into the magnificence of the universe and, at the same time, reminds us how important we are to the Creator. Some awe-inspiring photos accompany the text.
It’s a interesting & wonderful book. Full of amazing findings and scientific data that only causes us to reflect on the awesomeness of the Creator God of the Universe.
God and Space...my two favorite subjects in one book! I read this through on a flight from Vienna to Toronto. A quick read but has some great points. Do your problems feel small yet?
