Provides an overview of the past and present lives of the Powhatan people, tracing their customs, family life, history, culture, and relations with the United States government.
Both of our girls are studying the Powhatan Indians in school. Our second-grader is studying them along with the Lakota Indians and our fourth-grader is studying them along with the English settlers at Jamestown. So this book was a perfect way to reinforce what they are learning in school.
It's a fairly short book and we were able to read the entire book in one night. There are lots of photographs and an interesting narrative that is detailed, but not overwhelming. Scattered throughout the book are small sections that provide additional information and even a recipe for clam chowder (yum).
Overall, I was thrilled with this book. It was engaging and informative, but not boring at all. We really enjoyed reading this book together and our girls jumped in with all kinds of facts that they learned in school.
