Rappiotaidetta: suomiräpin tekijät
Suomen tunnetuimman räptaiteilijan Palefacen toimittama kirja läväyttää eteemme suomiräpin sammon, ehtymättömän kirjon omaäänisiä musiikintekijöitä ja kielentakojia. Teos kertaa lyhyesti hiphopin historian puuvillapelloilta jenkkigettoihin ja keskittyy sitten suomiräpin lyhyeen mutta sitäkin monipuolisempaan historiaan ja ominaispiirteisiin. Suomiräppiä ennakoineet kahdeksankymmentäluvun puhelaulukokeilut jäivät pitkäksi aikaa huomiotta, mutta yhdeksänkymmentäluvulla suurenkin yleisön tajuntaa koettelivat jo Raptorin ja Pääkkösten kaltaiset huumoriräppärit. Nykypäivään mennessä skene on kehittynyt erittäin moniääniseksi. Rappiotaidetta päästää itse tekijät kerrankin ääneen. Asa, Steen1, Laineenkasperi, Mattipee, Juhani, Elastinen, Davo, Cheek ja muut varteenotettavat räpäyttäjät esittelevät tekstejään ja ajatuksiaan luomistöistään, ja skenen työmyyrät kertovat näkemyksiään alan virtauksista. Kokonaiskuvaa täydentävät listat suomiräpin teemoista. Räplyriikan aiheita käsittelevässä osassa listataan suomiräppiä aihepiireittäin. Räppejä on tehty esimerkiksi aiheista "poliisi", "naiset", "raha ja sen puute" ja "marihuana suomiräpissä".

For years and years Finnish Rap music wasn't much more than a joke to me, than it became an annoyance for many a year as it still is for most parts. However, during the last few years I found some positive things about the genre; one has to admit that some of the best lyricists of our time are to found within its wider walls.
Out of this interest I decided to widen my knowledge of the music by reading about it. Paleface's book gives some basic information about how rap came to Finland and some personal details from the selected makers of music. It seems a limited perspective and, by my opinion, a bit of a jumble. While its nice that many voices get to speak their stories don't really connect. Perhaps a chronological order might have helped the book gain more consistency. Also, the lyrical examples didn't open up at least to a novice like me: was there supposed to be signs of progress? why the unreleased? Now, they just seemed to take too much space that I would rather have seen filled with stories by the rappers. You would imagine that people who (try to) use their vocabulary to earn a living would have more to say about themselves and about the genre.
Perhaps, Paleface meant this as an starting piece; the first book from where others can expand. As that it works, otherwise it seems a bit shallow work.
