I've never read a web comic I've liked...until this one. It has many earmarks of a typical gag oriented web comic: quirky black and white art, a mix of weird characters, and punchline dependent pacing. Unlike many of its brethren, this one is actually funny, the characters are interesting and likable, and the whole thing is tied together with a coherent, constantly building storyline. The plot structure is unique too, bouncing back and forth over a ten year period. Amid all the zaniness with vampires, cat burglars, ninjas, and werewolves, there is dark tone lurking in the background which gives the whole thing extra depth and style. I also really enjoyed the art, which has both manga and underground comix influences. This is a highly entertaining, clever and well done series I may even follow on the web!
I received this book in the August 2016 Comic Bento box, whose theme is animals. It features a character that is basically a live teddy bear. This is Fuzzy. He swears, smokes, has amnesia and creates general mayhem.
The book is told in two time periods. The first is right after Fuzzy awakens with amnesia. He teams up with a young woman who is a notorious thief. Despite their strange meeting, they team up and become friends. The second time period is set ten years later. The young woman is out of the picture, replaced with Sam and a few others. They operate an agency that specializes in solving strange problems. Plus there are ninjas.
There is a bit of humor in this book focusing on ridiculous situations, which is sometimes taken to an extreme. It fits though. This piece manages to pull it off because of the talking teddy bear. Despite being a webcomic originally, this book paces itself pretty well. Sometimes webcomics tend to jump around or just feel choppy. This book didn't have that problem at all.
The art feels right at home with this book. Some of the illustrations are ridiculous, which fits with some of the story elements. It is black and white, and I feel like this is a point in its favor. The drawings are a bit cartoony, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Sometimes that style can keep me from enjoying a book.
This is a longer book, so more can be packed into it, but there is a lot going on here. I enjoyed the characters and want to see what happens with them next.
This was just a fun collection for a webcomic. Small, bear-like creature Fuzzy wakes up in a dumpster with no memory of who he was or how he got there. The first person he encounters is a thief named Hazel. Ten years in the future, he's the partner to Sam, Emperor of the Ninja Mafia Services company. Sam wants the ninjas to be less violent and more helpful. Together, he and Fuzzy solve problems for people while slowly going broke.
The book alternates between Fuzzy's adventures with Sam and Hazel, ending with how Fuzzy met Sam. It's just a fun book.
A quirky dramedy and an easy read. The art is simple, yet perfectly so. I'm pretty hooked now on the series and am looking forward to starting the next one
