If you ever were or are on the fence about fluoride, read this book! Fluoride is linked to numerous medical maladies that I never knew about. And the involvement of the government to cover up this fact is truly unbelievable! As a dental hygienist, I was not totally in favor of it before, but after reading this book, I really have trouble giving fluoride treatments to children when the parents request it. It's a disturbing mental struggle. However, at the same time, whether we like it or not, fluoride is everywhere and just using spring water instead of tap water and using a non-fluoride toothpaste does not help us to escape from fluoride since it's in almost all packaged foods we eat on a daily basis.

I had a woman with masters degree in biology who aspired to work in public health policy tell me I was nuts for worrying about fluoridated water.
She had never read this book, and didn't seem interested in doing so. It's pretty scary that such a blind spot can exist among scientists that should be educated on a health subject that affects so many millions of people.
Bryson is an excellent journalist. He presents this side of the fluoride story without being too slanted or sensationalistic.
Consider this quote:
"In the 1930`s, Hitler and the German Nazi`s envisioned a world to be dominated and controlled by a Nazi philosophy of pan-Germanism. The German chemists worked out a very ingenious and far-reaching plan of mass-control which was submitted to and adopted by the German General Staff. This plan was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water supplies. By this method they could control the population in whole areas, reduce population by water medication that would produce sterility in women, and so on. In this scheme of mass-control, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place. ... "

Fluoride is a neurotoxin, carcinogen, causes skeletal deformities, organ damage, and brittle teeth. Fluoridated drinking water has never been shown to be either safe or effective in fighting cavities. Fluoride in the brain, organs, bones can have no benefit for teeth. Fluoride is a major industrial pollutant, emitted by the aluminum, fertilizer, gasoline, steel, plastics, and nuclear weapons industries. Fluoride pollution of the air, water, and land, has caused vast damage to livestock, crops, land, and loss of human life. Industry faced far more dollar liability from lawsuits due to fluoride pollution than from any other industrial pollutant.
Lawyers representing the polluting industries paid researchers to deny that fluoride is harmful. Fluoridating drinking water was a stunt to defuse fluoride-pollution lawsuits.
Researchers who have published the truth, that fluoride is highly toxic, have been fired and had their careers ruined. One of them may have been murdered. U.S. government agencies have been co-opted by the lawyers representing the polluting industries.

Wow.
For a while that was all I could think of to say.
Wow.
This book may not be what you are expecting.
You will be schooled on the cold war, the creation of the atomic bomb, and national security.
The book focuses mainly on the dangers of fluorides in respect to the environment, and the workers exposed to them while working for big industries. You will learn about the strange circumstances surrounding the decision to add fluoride to our drinking water and the problems that it may (or may not) be causing.
You will not hear as much about toothpaste as you might expect. You will learn of the many different ways you are exposed to fluoride.
If you thought that you didn't trust big business and the government before, you will be shocked to find the extent of the shady business deals, human experimentation and cover ups that have been going on for decades......
A must read for any US citizen.

"If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away." Those words, or something similar, are on every tube of fluoride toothpaste sold in America. What could be in it to cause such a warning? According to this book, it’s the fluoride.
Fluoride is not some safe, innocuous substance that happens to fight cavities. It is used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons, to prepare Sarin nerve gas, to produce high octane gasoline, also to make refrigerant gases and Teflon plastic. It is also used in drugs like Prozac and Cipro. Fluoride is a potential workplace poison and grave environmental hazard.
Since the 1930s, fluoride has been linked, in Europe, to a number of illnesses, like central nervous system disorders, breathing problems and a number of arthritis-like ailments. But during the Cold War, with help from researchers funded by the government and industry, no such problems were reported in America. It is as if "American" fluoride and "European" fluoride have two different sets of properties. Can anyone say "scientific fraud?"
Fluoride may actually help the teeth, but the evidence is not clear-cut. Cavity rates have fallen dramatically since the 1940s, but also in countries that don’t fluoridate their water. Perhaps good nutrition, better dental care and antibiotics can explain it.
The vast majority, nearly 90 percent, of the fluoride added to drinking water is actually industrial waste, scraped from the smokestacks of Florida phosphate fertilizer mills. The companies are spared the expense of treating this "fluosilicic acid" as toxic waste. Instead, it is sold to towns all over America. Shipped in rubber-lined tanker trucks, it is dumped into municipal reserviors, supposedly to fight cavities.
On several levels, this book easily reaches the level of Wow. This well-written tale of public relations whitewash and corporate/government collusion at the people’s expense has over 100 pages of footnotes, and is very much a Must Read.

This meticulously documented narrative paints a chilling portrait of the impact of bias in science and politics. Author Christopher Bryson begins with the tale of Phyllis Mullenix, chief neurotoxicologist at Forsyth Dental Center at Harvard University. However the story quickly connects with the Manhattan Project.
Dr. Mullenix was fired days after publishing a peer reviewed research project proving neurological deficits in rats with blood plasma levels of fluoride that match that of humans in communities with water fluoridation. Toxicologist and Chief Scientist Dr. William Marcus of the EPA had a similar experience when he voiced his concerns to his supervisors about the manipulation of data in a experiment looking at carcinogenic properties of fluoride. Dr. Marcus was vindicated and reinstated with a Whistleblower's defense. Dr. Mullenix wasn't so lucky. Having no interest in fluoride prior to being assigned this study, she now finds herself blacklisted from the type of work she loved. She now makes her living primarily as consultant.
However, the twist in the story is that the kindly old emeritus scientist who looked over her shoulder as she conducted her research was Harold Hodge, former Chief Medical Officer and Toxicologist of the Manhattan Project and the person who subtly promoted water fluoridation as a method of minimizing litigation against fluoride air pollution. (Google 1948 Donora Smog and Martins v Reynolds Metals lawsuit). Who knew, fluoride was considered more dangerous to workers than the radioactive products. One of Hodges water fluoridation cohorts was Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, also known as "the father of spin."
This isn't typically the type of book I review on my professional book list, however, it is a study in the destructive power of hierarchical culture, confirmation bias, and ad hominem attacks. It is also a book I believe should be widely read based on its content.
I strongly suggest you read this book.

Everyone needs to read this book. We used to think swallowing fluoride helps our teeth. Without knowing it, the CDC has changed this idea and now says fluoride is only good when it comes into contact with the teeth, swallowing fluoride does nothing for you and a matter of fact, too much fluoride can cause cancer, bone tissue changes, and nerve damage.
This book identifies many reasons fluoride became popular as a prevention to tooth decay. The main reason was to stop lawsuits against the military industrial complex that were using fluorine and fluoride to make aluminum and uranium. Both needed during the wartime build-out. To stop any lawsuits, fluoride was introduced as a cure all for tooth decay and added to water supplies and given as supplements to preganant women. No jury in the country could convict a corporation of fault with over exposure to fluoride since we all have it in our water and it makes better teeth! Great propaganda.
Read the book, then question whether swallowing fluoride is really that good for you. (Note: You still need to brush your teeth since it works great on teeth, but don't swallow it!)

This book reveals a history of conspiracies in the fluoride industry and fluoride's addition to are water supply and toothpaste. At the very beginning is the metal refinement, the atomic bomb and Harold Hodge, who shows up again committing Tuskegee like atrocities in The Plutonium files by Eileen Welsome. Edward Bernays (author of Propaganda) plays a major role in organizing dental cooperation for fluorides addition to the water supply. Bryson also documents a history of the Mellon Institutes science for hire policy as well as a dozen or so cases of pollution and health disasters directly related to fluoride. Remember if you don't brush your teeth with it or drink it with your water, its toxic waste. Great history, scary future.

You can't fault Brysons research in The Fluoride Deception. Its hard not to say that their are more dangers in putting Fluoride in the water than benefits if you look at the facts. The benefits to dental health are debatable but a lot of the damage it can cause in other areas is hard to debate. In an open honest forum where all the facts are presented I don't see how any government could justify putting this substance in the water. I feel lucky that I now live in a place that does not put Fluoride in the water.

For many years, factory workers (uninformed on the dangers of their work) connected to the Manhattan (Atomic Bomb) Project were injured, suffering from emphysema, bone deformities, arthritis, skin burns and damage, and other injuries as a result of exposure to fluoride compounds. The Fluoride Deception describes how fluoride's public image was fabricated so that the substance appeared innocuous and the very real claims of workers were ignored and industrial plants could go on polluting the environment and ruining the health of thousands and thousands of people without owning up to their piece of the puzzle.
I really want to read more about fluoride and its health effects on the body. This book focuses mainly on fluoride's connection with the Manhattan Project and how it went into the making of atomic weapons during the cold war.

A timely book to read with Portland's upcoming public vote about whether to add fluoride to local drinking water. I picked it up with some concerns about water fluoridation, and thought I might get some recent & relevant data on the subject. Instead, I got a roller-coaster ride that at times felt like I'd stepped into a Hollywood conspiracy story! I eyed certain quotes & claims with a fair amount of suspicion initially... I was not expecting the connection between fluoride and the Manhattan Project, Cold War governmental needs, and big-business industry. But the more I read, the less I could deny the outrageous facts that were being presented. This is not a light little read. It's deep, ugly and depressing. It's the story of how various industries, including the nuclear industry had a problem with toxic products they were spewing into the environment. So, what do you do when you have lawsuits pending as a result of lives destroyed? Get some scientists willing to accept money lots of money and advancement to fake studies and then put a good spin on those toxins with some killer (no pun intended) advertising. THEN when you get people who conflict with those studies, you just destroy their professional and personal lives lives and make sure they never work again.
Bottom line is fluoride is toxic and should NEVER be in our drinking water. Everyone should read this book.

Read, read ,read!! As if I didn't need another reason to get pissed off at our government funded corporation fiasco (long run-on whoops) that is either getting worse or better. I'd like to think that it's getting better through social media and the endless amounts of information we receive. Question everything folks! This is a must read. It goes into the health risks and symptoms of over exposure to fluoride. The fluoride Deception looks a the roots of the movement to fluoridate water, the scientific data that was published as far back as the early 1900s, and the marketing reasons why a substance that was once used as rat poison is now marketed as a dental wonder mineral. The author also shows top scientists and researchers that were once advocates of fluoride who were expelled from their careers when they honestly looked at the affects of fluoride.

This might be the scariest book I've read all year. Or decade. That being said, I am finding myself a little skeptical that the government would wipe all of these negative health problems and their direct cause under the rug and then go ahead and put fluoride into our drinking water & toothpaste. It's just seem ridiculous... Or would they? I can see why they wanted to hide the facts and go forward with the atomic and industrial advances to help win the war and make our lives easier in the 40's-50's. And not to mention how much the big business spends to lobby the government to ensure that their profits keep coming in and to keep the cost of production down-- sometimes at the cost of safety.
But it also scares the crap out of me it's all very true and still going on. Because as Bryson points out we do seem to have a lot of current mental, physical and environmental problems today, and the long term effects of even small amounts of fluorine have never been studied. All the evidence laid out covering the worker's and direct neighbors to factories health and environmental problems that can be directly linked to the use of fluorine was shocking. How we as a people seem to be getting continually sicker as our exposure to fluorine is now in everything - carpet, plastic, teflon, water seems very logical and obvious! This is also, sadly, another prime example of how money and power make the world go round and that the "little people" are disposable and even silenced when they don't go along with it - even when they are getting hurt.

Great book
If all the evidence printed here is true which I believe it to be, then adding fluoride to water should be stopped immediately. Though their appears some benefit to preventing tooth decay when using fluoride their also appears as much evidence for better oral hygiene to be at least as good if not better than adding a proven toxin to our diet. As I am a bit of a ‘conspiracy theorist’ it would appear that the people in control of this world may have an agenda which is not beneficial to the general population but ensures that people are made ill so that vested interests can make ever increasing profits from treatments and other spin offs related to health. The more I read books such as this one I am more convinced that the ‘New World Order’ and it’s drive for the eventual total ‘Globalisation’ of this beautiful planet that we live on will not be of benefit to the hoy palloy but benefit those nebulous individuals who believe that they know best and in some twisted way may even think that we will benefit from their tinkering.

Wow! Very eye opening! I did an analytical research paper on this subject and had to verify all my citations / references. I had found so many inconsistencies within our own US govt information. It's amazing how something you never really thought of before can change your viewpoint so drastically. I found, through researching, my head whirling by the time I was done with this book and my project! What started out as trying to debunk a silly conspiracy theory ended up as me questioning almost everything.

This book was a real eye opener. I knew fluoride was bad for you, but wasnt prepared for how bad. I have now switched to non-flouridated toothpaste and,always try not to let my family drink tap water!
