(Hardcover - 1959) 265 Pages, 1lb 8oz. Frank Conibear, J. L. Blundell, William Sloane Associates, 4th Printing 1959, 8.5x5.75x1 inches, Adventure, Fiction, The Wise One
Starts off with a trapper wondering what has happened to a family of beavers because he sees several derelict lodges. Then it goes on to fill in the blanks of what happened by following the journey of a young black beaver, whose life is automatically more full of peril because the colour of his pelt is rarer and more desired. The ending made me cry, and that is all I will say. This was the abridged version, and it was so eloquent, I can't even fathom just how excellent the unabridged version might be.
This book was and is my favourite book about animals and nature. I read it over and over as a kid, and it instilled in me a love and respect for nature that has stayed with me wel into adulthood. Reading it now as an adult, I'm still enthralled and captivated by Conibear's ability to have the reader viewing the world through the eys of an aquatic mammel. Please read this ook read it for yourself, read it to your children, share the love of nature with your children and hope that they also decide to read this exquisite book until its covers fall off.
