The
In this riveting real-life thriller, Philippe Sands offers a unique account of the daily life of senior Nazi SS Brigadeführer Otto Freiherr von Wächter and his wife, Charlotte. Drawing on a remarkable archive of family letters and diaries, he unveils a fascinating insight into life before and during the war, as a fugitive on the run in the Alps and then in Rome, and into the Cold War. Eventually the door is unlocked to a mystery that haunts Wächter's youngest son, who continues to believe his father was a good man.

East West
A profound, important book, a moving personal detective story and an uncovering of secret pasts, set in Europe’s center, the city of bright colors—Lviv, Ukraine, dividing east from west, north from south, in what had been the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A book that explores the development of the world-changing legal concepts of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” that came about as a result of the unprecedented atrocities of Hitler’s Third Reich.

I picked this book up in Waterstones on a rainy afternoon, having never heard of the author or read anything similar.

East West Street is absolutely fantastic, I couldn’t put it down. Philippe’s writing is so engaging, and the book covers so many angles from his own family history to legal law, Eastern European history, WWII and individual biographies of those he researches in the book.

I was initially interested in the book as I love a mystery, and I was so impressed at the lengths Philippe went to research his family history, but also his determination to dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’. For every new unanswered question he stumbled across, his thorough research and acknowledgement of the hurdles he faced were incredibly satisfying to read through. As someone who is fascinated by their own family history, and spends hours researching the unknown, I found Philippe’s story exciting and gripping, and I was invested from the start. I also learned so much otherwise - I had no idea about the history or prominence of Lviv, or that Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity were concepts born ahead of the Nuremberg trials. I found the attention Philippe paid to every individual he discusses in the book very thoughtful, and really appreciated the lengths he went to tell their stories.

For the breadth of topics covered and the detail Philippe manages to go into, I thought the book was incredibly well written. Such an interesting story of not just his own history, but our shared history, and of Philippe’s journey to uncover the truth. I especially loved his willingness to share intimate and personal details of his family history, and to confront them head on, and to not exclude the more uncomfortable or unfavourable details.

An excellent book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a well researched, well written mystery.

single-handedly revived my teenage dreams about practicing international law. but beyond that, there are parts of this book that feel like a love letter to history writing itself, and then parts of it that makes you despise what history has to show us when we look hard enough at it.
