DID YOU KNOW? The facts on porn are indisputable, and they are heartbreaking. Pornography, which is created against a backdrop of coercion and exploitation, is invading our lives, including the lives of our young children.
Author Benjamin Nolot, known for his filmmaking and his battle against sex trafficking, spent more than 10 years researching and writing Raised on Porn . This book is not some shrill attack on free speech or free expression. It is based on interviews with porn producers, directors, and performers, as well as neuroscientists, mental health professionals, and individuals and families who have been affected by pornography.
Raised on Porn is a carefully reasoned and thoroughly documented look at how porn has infiltrated modern life, why it matters, and how we can respond.
This book is a must-read for every parent, youth leader, educator, or anyone who cares about human rights, especially the rights of our most vulnerable people.
I got this book thinking it was written to parents to help protect children. Though that is an aspect of the book (about two chapters dedicated to that) the majority of the book is directed at explaining why porn is harmful, the industry, and how to recover from an addiction. The book is extremely graphic at times, but not beyond what you would expect talking about this topic. I would recommend the book if you don’t really know much on the topic, or you want to over come an addiction, but wouldn’t really recommend to Christian moms just wanting to help their kids unless you already know a kid is heavily involved with porn use. The book can be very painful in parts to read and down right gruesome.
Physically uncomfortable to read and digest at times but truly an important topic. I read from the lens of hoping to find ways to safeguard my child from exposure. I wanted more info on how to have age appropriate conversations about the importance of avoiding porn without sounding puritanical. The book offers more support to those with addiction or involved with a partner who is addicted then techniques to safeguard your child, hence the 4 stars.
wow. just not many adequate words for this. a really sobering, gut-wrenching read. and at the same time incredibly insightful and counter cultural in healthy ways. i’d be hesitant to recommend to many people based on its graphic nature and potential triggers; however, also think it will bring healing and restoration to many.
