Rate this book
Jayal Hasen has never had a one night stand, or taken someone home with for sex - he's just not that kind of man.
Not with his past.
But when his best friend introduces him to internationally acclaimed model Lu HaoRan, the attraction is immediate. The chemistry between them is such that, contrary to his character and all the fears he still can't shake, the two end up in bed. And though it was supposed to be just a one-night-stand, Jayal finds himself entertaining unexpected thoughts of something else...
Lu HaoRan isn't looking for a relationship - he doesn't believe that's in the stars for him.
Not with his life.
But after spending the night in Jayal Hasen's bed, he can't think of anything else, the memory of what took place becoming the haven he turns to when under stress. After weeks of trying to fight his growing obsession with a man he hardly knows and has never seen again, he's ready to throw caution to the wind and do all he can to meet Jayal again.
Still, a fine line stands between them, one that's made of everything they hide from one another, secrets that threaten to break them apart, even before they come together.
With neither finding the courage to cross that line, they risk losing each other without ever meeting again.
Who will take the first step?

Ruth Miranda is a Portugal born and raised author who feels more comfortable around words than people, especially if those words happen to be in English, a language she once taught for a living - amongst other varied jobs. She started making up stories in her head as a child, to put herself to sleep, but the stories kept growing with her, so eventually, they needed to be put to paper. Yet another novel of Ruth Miranda’s that has me mesmerized and loving the characters.

Just as many of Ruth’s novels, The Fine Line Between Us doesn’t stray away from hard and emotional topics. I’ve always appreciated that about all of Ruth’s novels, though. The rawness of the characters themselves, the issues they deal with and how those traumatic events impact them in the daily lives, and how through everything, no one is perfect, and that not everything can be solved the way we want it to.

In The Fine Line Between Us, we follow two main characters, Jayal and HaoRan. Both MCs, harbor their own dark secret. A secret that threatens to swallow them up alive even after they either have survived the trauma, or are willing to deal with it.

I liked how with Jayal, that he is overly critical on how he loves. Especially with HaoRan. He’s doing everything in his power to not be the man that hurt him in the past, but finds it difficult to allow anyone to truly help him. Or to realize, that he’s not alone, and that it’s all right to have someone truly be there for you.

With HaoRan, I found myself crying for him often throughout the novel. The pain and turmoil he faced and faced alone, sounds like a lonely existence. That he doesn’t believe he can be loved. Through the physical and psychological pain he goes through, and what he’s endured for most of his life, I’m surprised at the mental strength he has.

And together, both Jayal and HaoRan compliment each other in numerous ways; and I’m not talking about the trauma and pain they’ve endured, but rather, the love they have for one another and their friends and family.

Highly recommend this novel to anyone, especially you’ve read other standalones and series of Ruth Miranda thus far. Will definitely be reading this again.

The Fine Line Between Us might have become my favorite Ruth Miranda book, standing at the top of my list with Danseur.

Where do I start? I have loved everything about this book. Jayal and HaoRan are such strong characters, both fleshed out perfectly. They are wounded and both trying to find a new meaning to their lives. That's where they stand the night they meet. Neither of them expects sparks to fly like they do, but they soon find themselves involved in something much more than a one-night fling.

The two MCs come together naturally as they find safety and reassurance in each other, despite how hard it is for them to share their secrets and let go of the past. As always, the author is a master at showing how the human heart works. Something that hit me with particular intensity were Jayal's thoughts and how he questions his own actions (I can't go into details because of spoilers) and the way he approaches his new relationship with HaoRan. And HaoRan was an adorable character, I wanted to hug him throughout the book.

In true Ruth Miranda style there's pain in this book, and the storyline is truly about so much more than romance. The ending is so fulfilling, and so worth the journey through the complexity of this relationship. I really loved how the epilogie tied the book nicely to Mr. Moonlight, previous book in the series.

This is a standalone, but I'd highly recommend getting all the Byanamese Romances to catch all the references and nuances this series features.
