About the author

Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was an Indian astrophysicist and emeritus professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). His research was on alternative cosmology. Narlikar was also an author who wrote textbooks on cosmology, popular science books, and science fiction novels and short stories.

बालवयात वाचलेलं माझं पहिलं खगोलशास्त्रीय पुस्तक. त्या वयात ते कितपत कळलं होतं हे आता आठवत नाही, पण आयुष्यभरासाठी एक मौलिक असा ठेवा मात्र मला सापडला. मला न कळणाऱ्या शास्त्रीय संज्ञा मी वडिलांना विचारायचे आणि ते हि तितक्याच उत्साहाने माझ्या कुतूहलाला प्रोत्साहन देऊन, शंकांचं निरसन करायचे. एका अर्थी, आम्हा दोघांच्या वैज्ञानिक वाचन प्रवासाची सुरुवात नारळीकरांच्या ह्या पुस्तकाने झाली. केप्लर, कोपर्निकस, हर्शेल, न्यूटन यांच्या आयुष्यातल्या काही वैज्ञानिक गमतीजमती वाचताना त्या लक्षात राहिल्याच आणि सोबत प्रेरणादायी देखील ठरल्या. 'आयुका' बद्दल तेव्हा थोडी ऐकून माहिती होती, आणि नारळीकरांनी आयुकाची खूप वेचक वेधक माहिती पुस्तकातून दिली. आर्यभट्टाचा पुतळा आणि न्यूटनला ज्या सफरचंदाच्या झाडाखाली बसून गुरुत्वाकर्षणाच्या सिद्धांताची प्रेरणा सुचली, त्या झाडाचा इतिहास वाचून आणि फोटो बघून तेव्हा गंमत वाटलेली.

मला 'ताऱ्यांच्या विश्वात' हा लेख वाचतांना खूप विस्मयकारक माहितीचा खजिना हाती लागला होता. ताऱ्यांमधलं अंतर, आकाशगंगा आणि नेब्युला म्हणजेच अभ्रिका यांचं एक नवीन जग माझ्यासमोर तेव्हा उलगडलं गेलं होतं. सगळ्या पालकांनी त्यांच्या मुलांना हे पुस्तक आवर्जून वाचायला द्यावं किंवा त्यांना वाचून दाखवावं. अगदी सहज सुंदर अनुभव होतो खगोलशास्त्राचा.

You have gotcha questions about science, astrology, astro-physics, are you interested & curious to know about our sky that we see every day & night & keep questioning about ourselves about different objects such as Sun, Moon, evolution of earth & other planets, black holes, mikyway, other stars & their planets, astronomy, eclipses etc etc etc... This one will prove to be a fantastic book & that too in ur own language explained in very simple & reader friendly language. Use of jargon is avoided & the complex theories/concepts are described in a layman's language

An encyclopedic introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics written for young and old alike. The book is written in a very simple language, covers almost every topic, from observations to theories involved in Astronomy, and it is quite enjoyable to read. This was one of the books that inspired me to take up Astronomy professionally. I highly recommend this book, or its English translation: A Cosmic Adventure.

One of the best science popularization book ever written in Marathi.
Needs to be updated though with changes and new discoveries in science. For example, Pluto is no more a planet.

I read this book in my childhood and I can honestly say that this book was/is the sole reason for my interest in astronomy. Jayant narlikar is an amazing writer and he has done an amazing job of writing this book in Marathi for amateurs and kids. I absolutely loved this book.
