Adeline Dutton Train Whitney was an American poet and prolific writer, publishing more than 20 books for girls. Her books expressed a traditional view of women's roles and were popular throughout her life.
This is the story of Estabel Charlock, an orphan girl who lives with her aunt Esther, a country milliner. Her other aunt Vera Clymer invites her to live with her in the city. There she encounters unkind girls like Corinna Chilstone, unexpected friends like Lilian Hawtree, and a cynical doctor, Ulick North. I really enjoyed this 1899 novel. I liked seeing Estabel grow up and meet new friends. If you like Victorian social commentary, long plots, and an abundance of well-written characters, you should read this book.
