Hanna's quest leads her to tangle with the Russian mafia and learn dark secrets about her father's past, prompting her to question where her loyalties lie, and just how far she will go to prove herself. Science fiction novels that explore genetic mutations and superhuman abilities feed the imagination by transporting readers to worlds filled with wonder and possibility. In these stories, DNA is altered through technological or natural means, unlocking extraordinary abilities in humans and other beings. Characters struggle to understand and control their newfound powers while navigating a society that views them with skepticism, fear or admiration. Such narratives confront big questions about what it means to be human and the ethical implications of surpassing natural limitations through genetic modification. They invite readers to contemplate their own beliefs about free will, human perfection and the destiny of our species as our understanding of genetics and bioengineering advances. At their heart, these science fiction tales tap into our universal yearning to push boundaries, unleash our potential, and achieve the impossible - even if it means sacrificing elements of our humanity along the way.

Powerless tells the story of Hanna Super, a 16-year-old girl who discovers she does not have the superpowers that the rest of her family possesses due to a genetic mutation. Hanna Super is the black sheep of her extraordinary family despite carrying the super gene like her powered siblings. Working tirelessly in her father Artem's lab, Hanna desperately seeks to unlock her abilities before his patience runs out.

When Hanna makes a mistake in the lab, her father harshly kicks her out with nowhere to go. Hanna clings to one hope for redemption - if she develops powers, she can return home. This desperate bid to prove herself launches Hanna's quest to uncover the secrets hiding within her DNA.

Her journey brings her into conflict with the Russian mob and forces her to confront dark truths about her father's murky past. These revelations shake Hanna's loyalty to her family and push her to question how far she will go to gain the powers she so desperately craves. She begins piecing together the full story of what's really happening with superpowered individuals while seeking answers about why her gifts never surfaced, what happened to her mother, and who she can truly trust.

Though born with the super gene like her powered siblings, Hanna struggles with feeling like an outsider without abilities. On the run from her family, she faces the harsh realities of a world dominated by superhumans. Her quest focuses on survival, self-discovery and activating her dormant powers.

Powerless combines elements of science fiction, adventure and mystery as it probes the complex relationship between DNA, evolution and humanity. Readers accompany Hanna on an emotional journey as she fights for purpose and place amid uncertainty, conflict and difficult truths - witnessing her resilience and growth as she emerges from her outsider status in search of self-acceptance regardless of whether her powers manifest. One central theme is finding your true identity and sense of belonging. Hanna feels left out as the only family member without powers. She thinks getting powers will make her fit in. But her journey teaches her what really matters is being true to herself, regardless of powers. It's qualities like strength of character, caring for others and inner strength that define you - not genetic mutations. Hanna learns having resilience, doing what's right and being a good person make you truly powerful.

Another big theme is power dynamics and how power can corrupt. The story looks at how having superpowers affects people's status in society and in Hanna's family. Hanna sees her dad's power goes to his head as he tries to control and dump those he thinks are inferior. But Hanna realizes true strength comes from using your power to help others, not dominate them. This lesson is important as she struggles with her own desire for power.

Family connections and secrets also shape the story. Hanna's troubled relationships with her siblings and dad stem from lies and a lack of communication. As she discovers her family's hidden past, she sees how secrets have damaged the trust and closeness that should unite them. In the end, Hanna finds the courage to be true to herself. She realizes the truth is what builds real connections with others, even family. Overall the book examines what really gives life meaning. Hanna learns having superpowers isn't what makes you special. It's qualities like kindness, courage and being true to yourself that empower you to make a real difference - in your own life and the lives of others. These inner strengths help you forge bonds and find where you truly belong.

Jacqueline Pretty's writing in "Powerless" is simply captivating. She has a way with words that draws you in from the very beginning and keeps you engrossed until the very end. Her descriptions are so vivid and detailed that you can almost feel the world she has created coming to life around you. The pacing of the story is spot-on, with just the right balance of action and reflection. It's a rollercoaster of emotions as you follow Hanna's journey, and you can't help but root for her every step of the way.

What I really appreciate about Pretty's writing is her ability to create characters that feel like real people. Hanna, in particular, is such a relatable protagonist. You can feel her insecurities, her fears, and her longing for acceptance deep in your bones. And the supporting characters are equally well-developed, each with their own unique personality and motivations. It's a testament to Pretty's skill as a writer that she can make you care so deeply about these fictional individuals.

In conclusion, "Powerless" by Jacqueline Pretty is a remarkable novel that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction, self-discovery, and the pursuit of power. Pretty's masterful writing, captivating storytelling, and well-developed characters make for an immersive reading experience that leaves a lasting impact. Whether you're a fan of science fiction, superhero narratives, or coming-of-age stories, this book has something to offer. Its exploration of themes such as power, acceptance, and identity will resonate with readers of all ages, inviting introspection and sparking discussions. I highly recommend "Powerless" to readers who crave a thought-provoking and thrilling journey. Prepare to be transported into a world where extraordinary abilities and the search for belonging collide. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you follow Hanna's quest for self-discovery, resilience, and the pursuit of her own power.

I enjoyed every minute of this one!!

Hanna’s life is supposed to be simple. Live peacefully with her family, work in her lab to unlock the supernatural powers hidden in her DNA to earn her rightful place among her siblings, and help her monstrous father maximize the usage of the super gene mutation.

But all of that changed in a blink due to a sudden research leak and her father decided not to wait on her anymore.
In a split second, all her work and carefully laid plans went up in smoke as she got kicked out of her home, hunted down by her bloodthirsty brothers and sisters with nothing but one shot at redemption. Get your powers and you can come back.

After being taken under the enemy’s wing, Hanna quickly finds herself being tangled with the Russian mafia, the enemies she’s been sworn to hate almost all her life.

But how far would you go to prove yourself? And to whom? To the person who took you in and raised you all these years but never cared for you? Or to the people who have kidnapped you, branded you, and forced you to join them unwillingly but treated you like family & risked their lives to save you?

This one heck of a page turner action lovers and I enjoyed every minute of it. I was so emotionally invested in the story that it had me desperately rooting for Hanna to succeed.

Powerless was my first book by this author- another addition to my new authors of 2023 list- and it won’t be my last. It’s a great YA sci-fi read with a touch of fantasy, magic, and a slow-burn romance.

If you loved Renegades, you’ll ADORE this one! You do not want to sleep on this one action lovers!
Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a copy to review.

Ooo I **truly** loved this book! I read it *so* fast - couldn't put it down and the twists were excellent but I totally didn't see them coming! For anyone who loves Ally Carter-style YA, you will love this book!

In Powerless's world, everyone knows there are superheroes. There are super-powered weapons, research projects into superheroes, and even anti-super protests. Hanna is part of a family of superheroes and while she is a gifted researcher (very skilled around DNA), she doesn't have powers. She's kicked out of her home because of this and gets entangled in the Brotherhood, which is basically a mob family. And both the Brotherhood wants her help...

The things I loved about this book:
First, Hanna - who doesn't love a truly intelligent and bold MC who is dealing with (to say the least) tricky family dynamics? I really liked Hanna's relationship with her sister, Maria, and how well-developed all the characters in her family were - although we find out very quick, they are a pretty sadistic bunch.
Liza - a member of the Brotherhood, is probably my favourite character. She is BOLD and every scene with her is an action-packed blast.

The mystery - There are so many questions: about supers, about people's motivations, and even about Hanna's family. I was intrigued - especially by the mystery around Hanna's mother!
The world - She's developed such a complex world with its own science, issues, and rules. I believe it's based partially on Estonia - which is incredibly fun as it's far from your typical fantasy/sci-fi world. I was so intrigued!
The action - it's so well written. Every scene ends on a cliff hanger. Your heart is racing. Exactly what I want in this kind of read!

Superhero story fans will enjoy this book, but I think it would be very appealing to YA fantasy/sci-fi readers as well (we get to learn about some of the science behind the powers). General action/adventure fans will love - and I HIGHLY recommend!!

Content notes: self harm, toxic family dynamics, light drug references, and violence (but nothing beyond what you'd expect in an action book - and never too gory!)

OMG, I loved this book. Hanna was an amazing character, perfectly portrated as an 16 year old girl, her struggles, her feelings, I could feel it all. The world build was so good and the mystery of it all was top notch. I hated her siblings (except Maria of course) and her father, how can you be like that to family? That poor girl suffered so much just because she didn't have powers, it wasn't fair. I was so happy when Maksim died, f*ck him, been hurting for years just because. It's true that probably had they not been kidnapped or cloned by Artem they would turn out diferent but I think Maksim would be the exception, that kind of evil js something you're born with. Artem disapearing irritated me so much, it was so unfair, he deserved to die, he used those kids and in the end just left them to fend for themselves, what a horrible human being. Maria was a freaking angel, at least someone in that damn family loved her as she was. Liza and the rest of the gang were awesome, I love them, they were her family, made up and all. I can't wait for more from this world and see were things are going with literally everyone. I'm not gonna lie and say that I wouldn't like for Hanna to have a romance in the next book (if there's gonna be one) but we'll see

A fun and interesting superhero story with worldbuilding that had a significant effect on the story. I haven’t read many superhero stories, but this is certainly one of my favourites. It had an interesting cast of characters with an unique plot. I’m certainly excited to find out what happens in the next installment!

Delicious, from the start! The imagery and action sequences are what made this charmer impossible for me to put down. Make the mad journey beside Hanna in this blood-pumping, emotionally charged and electrifying story that’ll leave you gasping and clawing at the pages for the answers!

Born into the Super family, famously known for the identified gene mutation and special powers, Hanna finds suspicion in her family and their past. Starting over as a Regular may be her only option. After a brutal rejection and abandonment that catapults her into the path of the feared group, The Brotherhood, Hanna must face the reality she may never know what or who she is. In this SUPER-fueled novel, her forced quest is now to discover the truth and fill in the gaping holes in the story of what is really happening in the world of Supers. Where are her powers? Why didn't they come? What really happened to her mother? Who can she really trust?

“Hanna Super
Age: 16
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Gene present: Y
Power: Unknown”

Friends among enemies or enemies among friends, she must decide what length her desperation for her powers and belonging will push her, as she awaits a dormant gift to pair perfectly with the Super genetic mutation present in her DNA.

SUPERbly written, Author Jacqueline Pretty shuttles you on magnanimous twists and turns in the epic book, POWERLESS.

Powerless is a captivating YA science fiction novel that has earned its accolades. It's no surprise that this book has won an award and been short-listed for another.

The story follows Hanna, a young woman who is desperate to prove herself in a world where superpowers are the norm. The personal stakes for Hanna are high, even life-threatening, and I found myself questioning which characters Hanna could trust. So, I struggled to put the book down. I loved witnessing Hanna's empowerment journey. The development of the protagonist felt genuine and relatable, even if confronting at times (note: trigger warnings). I found the relationship between Hanna and her sister was touching and well-written and added depth to Hanna's character.

I'm hoping there will be another book to follow this one because I'm not ready for the journey with Hanna to be over. I highly recommend Powerless to anyone looking for a fast-paced YA read with a unique and intriguing concept, with wonderful, vivid settings throughout (in Estonia, of all places!)

I found the superhero aspects of the story to be very interesting and I really enjoyed following Hanna on this twisty adventure. There was such a wide variety of characters, which also added to my interest the story. I’m definitely looking forward to finding out how the story continues.

Honestly I read this book a little while ago and can't remember everything, but I knew I absolutely loved it! And it was so unexpected too!

I was hooked from the first page and the author did not let me go! The writing was amazing and I could see everything so clearly in my head. The characters were so complex and amazing, all morally grey too.

In this world superheros are real and discovered by a strand of DNA, but they have to be registered and monitored. Hanna is a part of the Super family, the daughter of the guy who found the DNA strand. But out of her three monstrous siblings, she is the only one who never manifested a power. So of course her father tried many many things to get her to show powers. But none of them worked, so she spent her days in the lab trying to make herself useful.

Until there was a leak and everyone blames her. She is cast out into the street straight into enemy hands. The Brotherhood, the society her mother was a part of and her father was trying to destroy. Hanna decides she will earn her place back in the family by spying. But in the end she must decide how far she will go for power. Will she betray her monstrous family, or the new ruthless family she has found in the Brotherhood?

The premise of this book sounds so good and it was definitely executed that way as well! I honestly wasn't expecting much but I got drawn into Hanna's world of fear, torture, science, superheroes and mafia gangs.

It had an unraveling mystery, strong characters, amazing writing and was action-packed!
I highly recommend this book to all my sci-fi fantasy fans who love a good genetic superhero trope with adventure and action plus a tight sisterly bond, bold and brash characters and of course daddy issues.

Content notes: self harm, toxic family dynamics, light drug references, and mild violence

Science and superpowers mix together in this new YA fantasy of a girl raised within a lab alongside her super powered siblings just trying her best to gain favor with their scientist of a father even when her powers never manifest.

🧬superpowers and science
🧬super smart FMC
🧬messed up home life
🧬mafia family
🧬found family
🧬sister love
🧬self-discovery
🧬TW: self-harm
🧬world like our own, but not our world

Hannah is definitely leaning toward a morally grey nature, pursuing whatever route she can to achieving her own powers and finally fit in and feel useful for the family she was raised with. I kept waiting for the shoe to drop where it’s revealed that her brain has been her superpower all along because this girl is SMART. Like every challenge thrown at her, she’s been able to come up with a solution. She may not always choose the best option (I mean she’s human, mistakes are part of the package), but she’s able to come up with some form of solution even under pressure. Not to mention the schooling she had as a child with her medical experience and science experiments, all at the age of sixteen. It’s incredibly impressive.

While this book lacked a romance factor, I didn’t mind that too much. I enjoyed the heavier lean into found family and the aspect of discovering oneself outside the confines of the very structured lie of a world that Hannah has lived in up until the events of this story. Definitely intrigued to see where things will go from here with how the book wrapped up.

This book was given to me, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I liked this book, it drew me in from the start and I finished it in one sitting. We get to follow Hanna, a girl with a super human gene who never got her powers. Her father, famous for his super children, gives up on Hanna and kicks her out of the home. Left alone and homeless on the streets, Hanna finds herself in the hand of the most notorious mafia, the Brotherhood. Now she must decide which side she’s really on, and who she can trust in a world full of lies.

I wish I could recommend this book to everyone, but this book can be super triggering to people. There is a content warning in the beginning of the book that reads. “This book contains strong language and depictions of self-harm, violence, depression and unhealthy family dynamics. Please be mindful of these and other possible triggers.” Other than that, I would recommend this book.

What a great book! Where does Hanna need to go for power, since she's powerless? Her family runs her out but does she find a true family with the competitor? How much must she go through before she finds herself. One thing that is for sure, MFC Hanna is SUPER strong.

Very interesting story

What if superheroes weren't always the good guys? This book flips the normal narrative we have on superheroes. They are normally viewed as.. well, the heroes. But this idea changes that to portray them not exactly as bad guys to begin with but also not as the bright, shiny, good guys. I will be very interested to continue reading about Hanna, Maria and Artem's story.

As a fan of superheroes and superpowers, I was intrigued by Jacqueline Pretty's debut novel, Powerless. While the science wasn’t too hard to catch up and it had an interesting setup and interesting plot and main characters, I felt it tried to bite off more than it can chew and led to a read that was just okay.

Hanna's a 16 year old girl desperate to gain superpowers just like the rest of her Super family (literally, their surname is Super, but it does make sense). In her desperation, she's experimenting with superhuman DNA to see how she can activate her latent ones. However, she finds herself thrown out of her home, joins the mafia, and everything she thought about the world turned upside down. I enjoyed Hanna as she's forced to question everything she knows and her very goals. Especially when you consider the family dynamics to be very messed up from the Supers early on. Yes, she's scared and questioning everything, but she's been thrown from a sheltered life into a pit of danger, and she's underage to boot. She's willing to do anything to get powers for years, doing anything, including self harm. I really like how she's determined to fix everything and grows throughout the story. Her relationships with her sister, Maria, and Liza later on were my favorites, as she seeks to protect them both. Also, I love how Arten Super himself is pretty complex and interesting (in more ways than one). The Doctor was sadistic and I like how he struck fear in many of the characters. Though I felt most of the secondary characters were kinda mix and match and mostly forgettable sadly, and hampered my reading experience in some sections.

The setting and lore stand out as unique, taking place in eastern Europe (formerly known as the Soviet block), fighting between the Supers and the Brotherhood. I enjoyed what we saw of the city and hearing about the restrictions on supers. I also thought some of the powers were fascinating as well. The science was fairly solid and didn't feel too complicated for the average reader. Though the world building felt more told than shown; we didn't see too much impact on those super regulations and it felt like some aspects of the mafia not as impactful.

The primary plot had a good foundation, with the rivalry between the Super family and the Russian mafia known as the Brotherhood, and we get an idea how both work. Each side has their own shades of grey despite first appearances, which I really appreciate. The plot moves at a decent pace, but some sections did feel like they dragged for too long, and I struggled to stay engaged. I was also confused about some of the smaller aspects of the story, which might have been an issue and made some of the smaller twists fall flat. While the main plot has resolution, it felt like some side questions raised throughout the book were never truly answered, especially since this seems like a standalone, but I could be wrong and there are more books planned in this world. The prose, while easy to read, felt like it was missing a sense of place in a lot of scenes.

Despite the negatives, this was an interesting take on superheroes and I will keep an eye out for Pretty as she continues her author career.

*I received an ARC from Pandora Books and Netgalley. All opinions are my own.*

With a beginning, which reminds a bit of The Umbrella Academy, this fast-paced adventure packs tons of intrigue and unexpected twists.

Hanna is one of the five siblings known as the Supers. Each harbors a unique gene, which gives them special powers: strength, fire, etc. Unfortunately, Hanna is sixteen and long past the point, where her powers should have emerged. While she's highly trained in combat, medical emergencies, and holds a special talent for genetic research, she's looked down upon by her siblings and father. When she accidentally spills chemicals over one of her experiments, her father has had enough of her mishaps and kicks her out of their home. Without money, ID, or even her shoes, she has to somehow find a way to survive, and soon, this mutates to a mission to save the world from her own family.

While the first chapters of this read rang with a little familiarity, it soon takes an exciting twist and shoots off in unexpected ways. I was surprised at quick the tension shoots up, and Hanna is propelled from one horrible situation into the next. It takes awhile before she even gets to catch a bit of a breath. Constant action and difficult predicaments along with tons of danger kept those pages turning, making sure it's not one easily put down. There were some logic stumbles on the flow end, but nothing which made me want to put the read down. There is violence, and this tale does hold triggers surrounding torture, abuse, murder, and mentions of drug use.

Hanna is a character with some grit, quite a bit of hesitancy, and okay morals despite the people around her. The author builds her family situation and relationships up nicely before heading off into the main thrust of the story. From there, the other characters fit in as necessary with enough quirks and personality to make them interesting. I didn't completely connect with Hanna's later friends, but that was fine considering everything that was going on. And there's a lot going on.
It was an exciting ride the entire way through.

I received a DRC and enjoyed this adventure quite a bit.

When Hanna was eight years old the first of her siblings got powers. Now 8 years later all her siblings have superpowers, but not her. Her father Arten Super, who discovered the superhero gene, is disappointed in her as she works hard in the lab to discover a way to unlock her powers. A supposed security leak gets her forced out of her home. She could return only if she wasn't 'powerless' anymore. She gets entangled with the Russian mafia — the Brotherhood — and learns dangerous secrets. But can she use them, who can she trust and can she survive?

The premise is captivating. A darker The Incredibles with a dangerous crime family as shadowy adversaries, what's not to like? Supers plus conspiracy heaven but with emotional gravitas. The pacing is a steady canter with bouts of galloping when needed. The writing brings you right into the action which is engagingly detailed. That and the intrigue have you not being able to put this book down.

The narrative is inviting, with a relatable protagonist you instantly root for, whose inner turmoil and familial agitation you can 'taste' from the beginning. In this story, Hanna wrestles with her moral compass. The depiction of intense feelings, self-harm etc is done wonderfully without sensationalism, but with sensitivity. The 'dangerous' parts are not sugarcoated, you feel how high the stakes are. The development of the characters is done in tandem with the story, never staunching the flow to the unfurling of the well-thought-out storyline. The twists and turns of the plot, undeniably surprising. I caught myself going "Whaaat?!" quite a few times.

This is about being true to yourself and the people who deserve it. It compliments inner strength, showing us that we are stronger than we think. About wanting to belong, to be accepted.

At times heart-wrenching, this is an exhilarating ride where anyone could be the good guy or the bad, that roars in its breathtaking intensity towards an epic finale. I adored this book and even if it stands quite well alone, I really hope there is a sequel.

“This is a very different superhero book as Hanna is thrown out by her superhero family. She’s, not surprisingly, a bit depressed! It’s a bit plodding for an adventure book, but that’s ok. I enjoyed getting to know Hanna and seeing what she went through.” Boy, aged 15
“Dark, a bit gritty, lots of character development. The hero’s family is toxic, and that’s putting it mildly. They make Harry Potter’s Aunt and Uncle look like Parents of the Year! The superhero world is interesting. I just hope there’s a book two.” Boy, aged 15

To Sum It Up:
‘A character focused ‘superhero’ novel with a gritty feel to it. A BRONZE MEDAL WINNER and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Hanna lives in fear of not being good enough for her father or her family. All her siblings have super powers while she has none. She is also far past the age where she should have started showing them. So she spends all her time researching in her father's lab for a way to make herself better and more acceptable to her family. As the author warns us in this book are depictions of self harm. Hanna does cut herself as a way to deal with the stress and fear she is under. Well she makes a mistake and her father kicks her out of the house with only what she carries on her back and sicks her demented family members on her.

The excitement is real as she flees from her family only to wind up in the embrace of a mafia family. Will she choose them or will she do anything to get back to the family that cruelly rejected her. This book is fast paced and well written. The world is detailed, terrifying at times and quite a mirror for those of us who have terrible family members and a history of self harm. You get so wrapped up with Hanna's survival that it is hard to put this book down. I couldn't until I finished it. You spend the book desperately wanting to protect this remarkably smart teen from the evils of her world and wanting to punish her family for their depravity. This is a fantastically written book and a good read for young adults. I am thankful for Netgalley and Pandora books for giving me an ARC of this book to enjoy in exchange for an honest review.

SUPERBOOK! I loved it so much! Superpowers have always been interesting to me and there was no way I wouldn't enjoy this book, but I ended up loving it way more than I thought I would. The dynamic between the siblings and their father sometimes reminded me of the Umbrella Academy and while I don't usually compare things to eachother, I hope that this comparison will spike interest of some of the people I know might also find the story captivating.
It's so fast paced and intense the whole duration of the book, I couldn't put it down, I read it in half a day.
That twist in the end was so good! I was grinning the whole time and couldn't believe how quickly it ended. I need next book to be born soon so that I can devour it as well.
I love the cover art, it's gorgeous and after finishing the book, it's twice as much interesting with all the details and hints.
I'm part Russian and loved all the Russkie words and names throughout the story. I also appreciated that one death scene of that character, very satisfying.
I'm powerless when it comes to books with superpowers, I wish we had seen more people with powers, hopefully next book will be more powerful.
I'm so grateful to the author for providing the E-ARC, this review is my honest opinion.
I will get my hands on physical copy because I truly loved "Powerless" and it needs to be in my life.

This was my favorite read this month which I am actually surprised about because I don't usually like superhero scifi books. But oh, this is soooo much more than that! It's a fantasy too, and it explores a lot of concepts like family, identity, and overcoming stigma. I had a realization as I was reading that one of my main personal grips with a lot of superhero novels is that its all about the action and doesn't leave any room for super deep relationships or any such emotional room. Powerless had it all. The weight Hanna bears and how she goes about her life after being basically rejected by her father isn't some off-handed kick into action but it actually highlights her character development and how she comes to terms with who she is. I also love any kind of literature or media that comments on what power means and how it can lead so many astray. Done through a fantasy medium, I think it's a cool way to explore real concepts like corruption and power-hungriness which, if anyone denies exists in our world, is naive. Exploring all of these themes through Hanna's journey never felt preachy or overdone but instead just the right amount of reflection and action to keep the plot moving. I really, really, really, really loved reading this (emphasis on the reallys) and this is exactly the kind of book I'd attribute to a lucky find.

This was certainly a different take on superheroes and another that reminds us that even when they wear costumes, they're still people underneath and that is what makes a hero whether one has powers or not.

While I very much loved the premise, I found myself wincing at the storytelling. One of the biggest pains was the intellect of the MC. Most of the time, she was next-level brilliant... until it was necessary to get her into trouble. At that point she was thick as a brick and it made me stop rooting for her.

Full marks for the set-up: being a member of a family where everyone has powers... except our MC. And despite how loveless all but one of her siblings and her father are shown to be, our MC still manages to be shocked when they throw her out. It just took too long for her to buy a clue.

I was a ping-pong ball, going from 3 to 4 stars and back again. But it was the Mafioso entanglement that smacked me back to a 3. Again, incredible methodology that was also in a capsule and only allowed to shine when it was convenient. It was the inconsistency that cinched it for me.

This was a GoodReads giveaway win of a Kindle ebook.

A slow start for me. I am not always a fan of YA books. I do keep an open mind and have to give an author a chance to show me that I am wrong. I felt our heroine was too naive. She just came across to me as too childish. I know that is the point of a YA book, to watch how one experiences the trials and tribulations in the growth quest, but it just added to my hesitation to engross myself into this book.

I mostly liked the conclusion. I would have appreciated some subtle insights of what our heroine's unique talents might be, but that is mostly the puzzle solver in me.

A science issue with me. Clones do not share retina patterns and especially not fingerprints. Those traits are not genetic, but rather a product of the embryo growth media.

The premise behind Powerless had me intrigued. A family full of children with superpowers. All except one, Hanna. I felt bad for Hanna. Her siblings and her father were so cruel to her. Maria was the lone sibling who tried her best to protect Hanna.

Hanna was kicked out of the family because her powers never materialized. I am used to reading books with violence but the violence in Powerless bordered on sadistic. After the book took a dark turn, the plot started to drag. Hanna hooked up with the Brotherhood but fiercely wanted to get back to the family that was cruel to her for her entire life.

This was just ok for me and I feel like there could possibly be another book. If there is a sequel, I will pass. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.

I honestly wasn't sure whether or not I was going to like this book. The premise was interesting, but there's been so many Young Adult Superhero (read: Mary Sue) books after the success of 'The Hunger Games', I sincerely hoped that this would stand on its own.

I'm glad to say that it does.

Set less in a world of the X-Men and more of Watchmen or The Boys, we initially follow a family with the literal surname of Super. The patriarch, a (not mad, honest) scientist, is utilising his superpowered children to act as heroes and save the world, while also investigating the genetics of those powers.

He's assisted by his youngest daughter Hanna, our protagonist and narrator, who is the only member of the family to be 'normal'. Making up for this, though, she's a scientific prodigy, looking for the solution to the superhero gene key so that she may become like her siblings.

That's the beginning. We quickly move into a very different story, as Hanna discovers things aren't quite as rosy as she believed. In fact, the alleged 'normal rebels' creating havoc around their city may be hiding more truths than she imagined.

While we have a little nod to the heroes/villains greyness of the X-Men, this story has a unique voice that I found very pleasing. The setting is quasi-Russian, which makes it extremely interesting - I've been fascinating with their fiction style since first encountering the book 'Nightwatch'. It's a fresh perspective, and while Hanna may be seem annoying or naive at first, the reader soon realises that she's been virtually brainwashed, her family almost a superhero cult.

This would be a great read for teenagers, I think, but as a mature (ahem) adult, I lost a good few hours glued to it from the halfway point, eager to see how things would turn out - I genuinely couldn't guess!

If you want a bit of originality and good-natured cynicism in your superhero novels, this definitely deserves checking out. I look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

I was kindly sent an advance copy of this book but the above opinions are my own.
