Betrothed
In BETROTHED (Book #6 in the Vampire Journals), Caitlin and Caleb find themselves, once again, back in time this time, in the London of 1599.
London in 1599 is a wild place, filled with while on the one hand it is an incredibly enlightened, sophisticated time, breeding playwrights like Shakespeare, on the other, it is also barbaric and cruel, with daily public executions, torture, and heads of prisoners impaled on spikes. It is also a time of superstition and grave public danger, with a lack of sanitation, and the Bubonic Plague spreading in the streets, carried by rats.
In this environment Caitlin and Caleb land, on the search for her father, for the third key, for the mythical shield that can save humankind. Their mission takes them through a whirlwind of London’s most amazing medieval architecture, through the British countryside's most breathtaking castles. It takes them back into the heart of London, where they just might meet Shakespeare himself, and see one of his plays live. It brings them to a little girl, Scarlet, who just might become their daughter. And all the while, Caitlin's love for Caleb deepens, as finally they are together and as Caleb might just finally find the perfect time, and place, to propose to her.
Sam and Polly have traveled back, too, and as they find themselves stuck together on their own journey, their relationship deepens, as they each, despite themselves, can't help feeling more deeply for each other.
But all is not well. Kyle has come back, too, as has his evil sidekick, Sergei, and they are both intent on destroying everything good in Caitlin's life. It will be a race to the finish, as Caitlin is forced to make some of the hardest decisions of her life if she is to save everyone who is dear to her, save her relationship with Caleb and try to make it out alive.

A spoiler list of random happenings:
- Caitlin and crew go to 1500's London, where Caitlin is shocked to learn that everyone in town has a British accent. This begs the question: did the people in all the other historical locations have generic American accents?
- I haven't mentioned this before, but in each installment, some part of Kyle's body is chopped off or maimed, leaving him increasingly more grotesque. This does not make sense, because he is a fast-healing vampire
- Kyle brings the bubonic plague with him back in time, even though the last time we saw him, he didn't have any with him. This makes me wonder if Kyle isn't directly following Caitlin back in time, but rather that the different appearances of Kyle throughout the series are chronologically out of order for his storyline. Or Morgan Rice just thought about it a whole lot less than I did
- Polly and Sam, despite liking each other a decently normal amount and being somewhat decent around each other from their initial insta-love in the previous book, seem to forget all that and instead actively dislike each other. This is all of course the supposed build up of their enemies to lovers love story, even though Sam is a sexist pig and Polly is an icon
- Speaking of Polly, she gets kidnapped by Sergei (the professional singer guy that Caitlin accidentally murdered and turned into a vampire in the first book) who apparently has been living in a castle in medieval England for hundreds of years and has a harem of slave women. He makes Polly one of said slave women. All timeline inconsistencies should be blamed on time travel hijinks I guess
- Caitlin and Caleb get engaged and she's super shocked, even though he's attempted to propose several times and she always gets super angry and jealous of any other girl within a lightyear of Caleb and storms off. She does this again at their engagement party because a woman has the audacity to know Caleb. Caleb, at this point, doesn't know about Blake
- Caitlin and Caleb also decide to adopt a random girl they found on the street. Caitlin claims that Scarlet (the little girl) is essentially the reincarnation of her unborn child
- Caleb and Scarlet are on their deathbeds for various reasons but for some reason, even though everything indicates that NOTHING can save Scarlet, Caitlin seems to think that the thing that will save Caleb will save Scarlet too even though that doesn't make any sense whatsoever
- Instead of following her destiny, which will lead to the salvation of literally the entire world, Caitlin decides to attempt to save Caleb, which will ultimately result in both their deaths along with the entire world
- The reason why Caitlin is the chosen one is vague at best and reminiscent of the Hunger Games at worst. Her mysterious dad and his weird Tolkien elf vampire cult literally haven't given a single reason why they can't just tell her exactly what to do or just do it themselves
- William Shakespeare shows up. He's ~one of the boys~ but still kind of reminded me of Jesse Eisenberg in how annoying and semantic he was. Caitlin thinks he's the coolest person ever and almost gives away that she's a time travelling vampire

- Caitlin almost starves her human adopted child and her second wolf pup to death because she doesn't understand that living beings need to eat. This is a recurring problem
- Morgan Rice seems to be unaware of the historical fact that men played women in all plays for hundreds of years.

-Violet, an introvert angsty vampire (the same girl that dared to have any knowledge of Caleb's existence at the engagement celebration) plays a song by Bach on the piano. Bach would not be born for another 100 years. Maybe this is because of time travel?
- Both Caitlin and Caleb hallucinate Caleb's dead son (the one that Caitlin inadvertently killed) even though Caleb is the only one who's sick. I would say ghosts but Jade wouldn't be born for hundreds of years.

Overall the story is fine, but it lacks real depth. Its very repetitive. So far most books have had at least one discovery in her quest to find her father and the sword/shield that will help them.. she is expecting to find something every time she gets to a destination.. so why is she "surprised by what she finds", "shocked by what she finds", "cant believe what she see's"?
That aside im also beginning to get rather irritated with Caitlin .. she claims she loves Caleb, yet repeatedly she flies off the handle at the appearance of ex lover, something which he has no control over. Despite his reassurances that he loves her she consistently believes the worst in him. There is no growth to her character.. surely any normal person would rationalize and accept he is telling the truth, especially when he has given her no evidence that he wishes to be with his ex.
Dont even get me started on their inability to finish off Kyle.....
That said i will continue to finish the series because i hate not knowing how the series ends, im just hoping it does actually end with Found. I've pretty much read the books back to back, so maybe if you dont you will find them more enjoyable.

Same old, same old
If you've read book 3, 4 or 5 then you've read this, it's the same book, you maybe asking why under these circumstances I bothered to buy this book well I was an idiot I was so impressed with books 1 and 2 and I purchased the rest through to 8 and saved them up to read together which apart from the fact that it was too late to ask for a refund was also the worst idea in the history of bad ideas since they're basically all the same book. Caitlynn races through time Kyle goes after her they fight, do they kill each other no they do it all again, Caitlynn races through time Kyle comes after her they fight it's like Groundhog Day.

That's it. I give up. I can no longer take it. As much as I'd like to know how the story ends, I can't take the writing style any longer. I barely skimmed the last third of this book, and even that was too much. I won't read any more books by this writer.

I like the story, but can't stand the fact that there are so many editing mistakes throughout this entire series. Morgan Rice needs to fire her editor and find someone who can do a better job. The mistakes often distract me from the story.

Yeah Thanks to the wonderful Morgan Rice this was free ebook for her fans that are on her newsletter started reading it as soon as I got the email.
Caitlin and Caleb and Sam and Polly are taken back to London 1599. Caitlin and Caleb and the too cute Ruth are together at the Westmister Abby. It took a minute for Caitlin to remember got me scared for a minute that she would not remember Caleb after all they have been thru but after a couple of minutes her memory started coming back like a computer uploading data of course her trusty wolf Ruth is there to welcome Caitlin. Caitlin and Caleb are on a mission to find the 3rd key in quest to find her father and get the shield to save the human race. Caitlin and Caleb are joint by those in her past her brother Sam and the funny and happy Polly and those from her last travel also join them in the quest to help Caitlin get the key. This is alway not easy for Caitlin as Kyle and Sergei are always causing trouble this time they are doing it in their own ways. Betrothed did have a wonderful unexpected turn with a smart cute little girl named Scarlet I believe it was a perfect timing to bring this little girl into the storyline. To make up to Caitlin for losing her child when she had to time travel to save Caleb. However when things start to make sense to Caitlin and she is finally getting the family she wants. Kyle trouble maker he is starts to bare its ugly head effecting Scarlet and her fiance (yes I said it!!) Caleb now does Caitlin continue her mission to get the key to save the human race or does she finally puts her family first and save Caleb and Scarlet? Does Sam and Polly get together? Those are questions that are answered. If you have been a fan of the Vampire journals you will want to get this book. Morgan Rice takes you back Shakesperian time were there are twist and turns and makes you needing to remember your history lesson because at my age I could not remember and was reminded of time were life was a little bit more easier and simple. I was able to read this story in one day only because once I got started I couldn't put it down and crying and laughing with Caitlin. I gave Betrothed 5 stars cause it deserved it.

I've read ALL of the Vampire Journals by Morgan Rice and I've reviewed just about all of them too. (See the Reviews here: Book 1 - Turned, Book 2 - Loved, Book 3 - Betrayed, Book 4 - Destined, Book 5 - Desired)
This is Book # 6 in this series and I was excited for a couple reasons to get into this book. #1 - The Title. Betrothed means obviously someone is getting married and of course those somebodies should be Caitlin and Caleb. #2 - Caitlin and Caleb. I've enjoyed, for the most part, watching this couple and these characters develop. The title, as mentioned before, gives me the thought that this is the book where these two finally get married and finally get it right.
I'm sad to say that this isn't the case and I'm MORE than frustrated by this series. Up to this point I've given 3 and 4 stars to these books and while this one is much like the previous books that is EXACTLY why I'm giving it 2 stars.
It's like.. a rinse and repeat series at this point. The only difference is location, clues, and items found/collected along the way. While there is a bit of a side story and of course history of the location provided through out the story other than that you pretty much know whats going to happen. Time travel, search for clues, find clues, search, find and time travel again!
This worked, and was satisfying, for 2 or 3 books but enough is enough. Stop dragging this out! Let Caitlin and Sam find their father. Let Caitlin save the world. Let Caleb and Caitlin get married. Let Sam fall in love and be happy.
If you aren't frustrated by the way this series has played out then go ahead and check this book out. It's not a horrible read. There are a couple of interesting things that happen and of course you get to check out Caleb again.

Volume 6 is a more enjoyable read then Volumes 4 and 5. Caitlin isn't nearly as dysfunctional and inmature as in the previous books. She still has her moments but this book doesn't dwell on it for 200 pages as the previous books have. Caitlin and Caleb are now back in London in 1599 still searching for the keys Caitlin's father left her. They have two keys already. Most of the characters from the previous books are also in London. A new character Scarlett is added. She is a human who Caitlin and Caleb save from being beaten by a grownup. They basically adopt her. I like how Rice weaves history into her story. The Bubonic plague makes an appearence through Kyle. Scarlett contracts the plague and Caleb is poisened and on death bed. Can they be saved? Can Caitlin find another key moving her closer to her father?
Kind of a fun easy read where you get some history thrown in. Looking forward to the last few books.

Firstly, I have not read the previous books. I found this in my library and felt I had to read it. None of the others in the series were there.
Morgan needs to sack her editor, or more likely, if she doesn't have one, she needs one like NOW. She repeats herself a lot. Sometimes in the same sentence, and mostly in her description. This is distracting from the actual story. Also several times in the book she confuses characters. At one point there was a scene where Caitlin was alone and then suddenly Caitlin was called Caleb. Um, wait what?
I'm giving this book 3 stars because the plot was enjoyable. However that might change if I read the other books, since she might Be repetitive with plots as well. It was also a fast read. It only took me about four or five hours here and there.
Kudos to Morgan for getting her books out there, but I feel they needed a lot more work.

I re-read all five books so I could be sure I would not be lost in this one since it had been a while since I read the last one. Some of the writing is very good but could have been better without dragging for out so long. For example, when I want to read Shakespeare I will go directly to the source not read a partial play within a book. History is great in a novel unless it takes over the original story. That said, I do believe Miss Rice would love to time travel herself and would like to share the excitement with her readers. The editing(especially in what should have been the most engrossing parts) was so bad it completely pulled you away from the story. Next time, please, more editing and less time just filling up pages as if to satisfy a contract.

She needs an editor or someone who actually knows English history and geography. Britain didn't exist in 1599, the kingdom of England and Wales did but Scotland was a separate country therefore no British guards at the Tower of London.
Leeds Castle is in Kent, therefore you don't go north from Windsor Castle to get to it. If, however, she meant the city of Leeds, it doesn't and hasn't ever had a castle. Other than that, the book's the same light easy to read quality as the previous ones.

Kill...me...now! These are the absolute WORST reads I have ever come across...damn me for not giving up on a book/series until I am finished, once I start I have to push through until I am finished...and these books are so bad I literally quit reading period...they really are just that poorly written, my 5 year old tells better stories than this crap!

Ok. I give up. A part if me wants to know how this series ends, but the other part of me can't continue the pain if reading such a poorly edited story. I'm not a picky reader, but even I, can't stand to read any more of this. Does she even have an editor? She constantly messes up on names, words, and the timeline. I just can't stand it anymore!

Ok, didn't complete this one. I just had to walk away. The writing is terrible, storyline is not worth my time and honestly the character of Kyle harbors such hatred towards women that his constant desire to torture and kill them honestly makes me wonder if the author doesn't possess his own hatred of women. Became so disturbing to me I returned it.

I hated reading this book. I really wanted to enjoy it. Have it so many tries. So far all six books could have been condensed into 2 to three. So much that has already been said and it is repeated each book. Stay tuned to see if I finished the other books because this one was so bad.

How this author ever became a best seller is beyond me.

4 Estrellas de 5 Estrellas.
Morgan Rice se ha vuelto de mis autoras favoritas para salir de bloqueos lectores, si bien hasta ahora solo he leído una de sus sagas enteras y estoy con esta ahora. Siento que es muy versátil. Si buscas un poco su bibliografía verás que hay historias medievales, futuristas, de vampiros, gladiadores entre otras.
Sé que mi calificación puede ser muy alta para la mayoría, pero su narrativa fácil y rápida hacen que una tarde de mucho estrés se vuelva amena con su lectura.
Si bien, sus libros tienden a ser un poco repetitivos en algunas entregas, aceptaré que esta saga lleva así desde el libro 3, 4, 5 y este, pero aún así, cada uno te transporta a una época y lugar distintos y eso es lo que te mantiene inmerso en la lectura.
El manejo de sus personajes y la complejidad no siempre es la que uno espera, pero con cada libro va dedicando poco a poco el desarrollo a algún personaje. En esta ocasión le tocó el turno a Sam, el hermano de Caitlin.
Si bien como dice la sinopsis vamos al Londres de 1599 y de nuevo los antagonistas Kyle y Sergei siguen de cerca los pasos de Caitlin, Polly, Sam y Caleb para evitar conseguir la 3ra llave y el escudo. Sin mencionar el conocer al misterioso padre de Caitlin y Sam.
De nuevo nuestros protagonistas se encuentran con viejos nuevos amigos y conocidos. Y una pequeña niña llamada Scarlet se nos une. Pero cosas pasarán que cuando por fin Caitlin y Caleb creen estar cerca de terminar su misión y poder ser felices, llega la sombra que atrae problemas y es ahí donde Caitlin deberá tomar una decisión, una decisión que podría cambiar el curso de la historia, terminar la misión en fracaso y poner en riesgos a todos, tanto Vampiros como Humanos.
Por otro lado vemos lo que podría ser el comienzo de un nuevo romance y se nos revela que Sam tiene una misión especial en esta cruzada para encontrar el escudo y así es como Polly se le une, junto con los demás miembros de la cofradía para entrenarse.
Y como es costumbre con Morgan Rice, el final del libro te deja en lo más emocionante de la historia, en cliffhanger. Si bien no negare que el libro anterior me pareció un poco flojo y con discusión absurdas, este me entretuvo más y aunque no me salvó del agujerito que sentía por mi lectura anterior, si me entretuvo, me dejó con ganas de saber más y no me permitió entrar en un bloqueo lector.
Lo disfruté y lo recomiendo, sobre todo para pasar una tarde amena libre de estrés y con una lectura segura que sabes que no te causará bloqueo. Es fácil y sencilla.

I started this series ages ago I couldn’t even make it all the way through this book. I’m not one quit on a story/book/series but this was truly appalling. I idiotically bought all the books that were available because I fell in love with the first 2 and then I quickly realized that was the worst decision I’ve probably ever made. This book just like 3, 4, & 5 are basically repeating the same storyline and the level of unnecessary angst from the MC is nauseating. The writing is terrible and the editing is tragic this felt like a rough draft of a rough draft.

Story is great! but I hate the numerous grammatical errors. Twice the name of the characters were wrong and one was even a name never before used in this entire series even though it should have been a main character. Sometimes it gets confusing when the wrong pronouns are used. It can make you have to reread the section to make sure you are following along well enough. I have read the entire series thus far and will continue to read them because the storyline is very good, however, I have elementary school students that can find the errors in some of these sentences.

Caitlin, Caleb, Sam and Polly end up in Shakespeare’s England. Caleb finally proposed to Caitlin but their joy in short lived. Kyle sets loose the Black Plague in London and set about to poison Caitlin. Poor Caitlin just can’t catch a break. Caleb’s maker visits and Caitlin is jealous but controls herself a bit better. Once more she’s expected to go in search of an elusive key to save them all. Sam too is learning control and saves Polly from Sergei. Tough choices for Caitlin but her father still not found.

Buena continuación de esta fabulosa saga de fantasía de vampiros. Una vez más puntos giros inesperados para los protagonistas que le da la autora para poder iniciar con el siguiente libro. Aunque pienso podría variarían poco la manera en que tienen que finalizar las novelas desde el libro 2. Pero bueno le dejo que siga así por que nos entrega buenas historias en cada libro. Le doy 4/5 estrellas o un 9.3/10

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.
We have arrived in London at just before the big fire and black plague. Yes, Kyle is not far behind, causing mischief and mayhem.
Another scavenger hunt,and another jealous outburst.
William Shakespeare makes an appearance, and I now have greater appreciation of Romeo and Juliet.

This book has all kinds of neat things going on. Medieval era, Shakespeare, an adopted child, travel, London, British countryside, Caitlin finds her Dad, an engagement. The list goes on. Unfortunately, Kyle is still trying to destroy them and releases a plague. Caitlin then needs to make a decision and hope it’s the right thing to save her loved ones.

I am definitely loving this series
I have to take my time with every book or my husband gets mad if I go through them to fast
So many twists and turns in this book also
