Think about the people who influenced your life most. Why did they do it? What did they do? How did they go about it? Answer these questions and you will be hooked on mentoring for the rest of your life. InAs Iron Sharpens Iron, respected authors Howard and Bill Hendricks show that the most dramatic spiritual and personal growth often happens through the influence of a mentor. Rooted in biblical principles, this book is both a profound and practical guide to mentoring relationships for men. You'll learn how to identify the kind of mentor you need, maximize your mentoring relationship, model your relationship after biblical examples, grow through the shared wisdom of another believer, and influence others as you replicate the mentoring process. Whether you are looking for a mentor or wish to mentor someone else, this book provides specific steps to begin the relationship and make the most of it.
This is a great resource for leaders who's calling is to mentor others. It is for male leaders who are pouring into other men's characters. Good resourse to learn from. I would recommend women who read this book to critically approach it from women's perspective. Adapt the methods, specifics to women's needs and realities to better serve these.
Good, solid, biblical advice and guidance for men. All of us have someone we can influence in a positive fashion. This book encourages men in discipleship of others. Some of it is a little obvious or overly analytical in terms of how to build a relationship with others, but still valuable. I also appreciate that it was written in two parts, considering both parties viewpoints. Fathers, this would be an excellent read to help you be more intentional about how you raise your sons. I will use much of the advice in that area. Overall, a very valuable reference material I will look to often as I pursue mentoring opportunities.
I seem to never get enough Howard Hendricks. In whatever he writes, I feel as if I am meeting the man and am hearing the words on the page in his own tongue. His personality shines through and you get a real sense of the man. I say this because this book is about mentoring and mentoring has to do with relationships. This was such an inspirational book and one that calls for implementation (Hendricks himself even worries about an approach that goes from "that was great" to a "moved on" phase. The book is two for the price of one. One section is about those wishing to find a mentor and the importance of one. The other is about those wishing to mentor and the importance of the other. If you have a calling for either being mentored or being a mentor - this book will be the kick off book you need and I would go so far as to say the only one you may need. It offers advice, examples, questions, reasons, responses, encouragement, suggestions, etc. and etc. Even if you think you may have a slight want to either be mentored or to begin mentoring (heck, if you feel you don't want to be either!), this book will make you want to be an influence in another person's life - just as Titus 2 calls us all to be. Final Grade - A
A very practical book on mentoring. Written from a Christian perspective, but containing principles that can apply to any type of mentoring (vocational, sports, hobbies, etc.) Dr. Hendricks knows what he is talking about as he mentored hundreds of students, businessmen and laymen during the course of his tenure at Dallas Theological seminary. I had the pleasure to hear Dr. Hendricks speak on a number of occasions while he was still alive and he never, never disappointed. Neither does this book. Read it!
Very good book on mentoring or discipleship. I especially like the awareness presented on the absence of dads in the homes. Working in the bus ministry for our church, I am increasingly aware that there are very few dads in homes where there are kids. Most of the mentoring is done with either mothers or grandmothers. Where is the male influence in the homes? This is a sad reflection on our country and the lack of leadership, and I might say the cause of a lack of leadership.
Hendricks is classic! Although it is written specifically about men's mentoring, it was a valuable resource as I prepared to present to both men and women. Two thumbs up!
