This was my book when I was five years old. My kids have me read it to them every fall, and sometimes more than once - they are now ages 17 and 9, and still find it as charming as they ever did. I did always wonder if it's more of a New England fall than an Arkansas autumn, though.
As an adult, a handful of years back, I realized the illustrations are rendered with an alcohol-based illustration marker. The soft quality of the linework makes for a hazy, autumnal effect.
Will read again, next fall.
2024 re-read: The next entry in our comfort reading with the 12YO at bedtime.
As a little kid, I asked my mom to read this book to me so often, she got sick of it, hid it from me, and told me it was lost. Then, when she thought she could stomach it again, the book was miraculously "found."
A lovely poetic text. The illustrations are good, but less likely to appeal to modern children... an updated version with acrylics would be popular, I bet. LFL find.
