South Rock High #4

Advanced Chemistry

Rate this book
Today’s experiment: Combine one socially awkward science teacher with two beefy, former students. Mix well.

I love watching chemicals bond, but I avoid the practice myself.

When I’m not teaching, I’m hanging out with my cat and putting together puzzles. I shy away from romantic entanglements because I know firsthand the collateral damage they cause.

Until I bump into Anton and Sebastian: best friends, business partners. and former wrestling superstars at South Rock High who could barely pass my class. Catching up turns into drinking, which turns into dancing, which turns into them practicing wrestling moves on me, sans clothing.

It's clear that the men have a history—and some unresolved feelings between them—but being the piece of meat in their jock sandwich unleashes a wild, confident side in me I can’t ignore.

The other thing I can’t ignore: we’re falling for each other.

With three hearts on the line, I can’t risk destroying their close friendship and burgeoning business, not to mention reliving my own past pain. But is the chemical attraction between us too strong to ignore?

Advanced Chemistry is a teacher/former students, nerd/jock, friends-to-lovers MMM romance filled with humor, heart, and hot guys. Chase, Anton, and Sebastian will put the A-plus in HEA, and like all good students, there’s no cheating. It’s the fourth book in the South Rock High series, which revolves around a found family of nerdy gay high school teachers, but can be read as a standalone.

I liked these men individually, the author did a great job with their characterization, but there was something missing from them as a throuple.

The intimacy was smokin hot (upside down w/glasses still on, somehow), but the emotional element was lacking.

Funny and sweet, not overly dramatic. Recommended for readers who enjoy light gay romance and poly relationships. Ends with an HEA.

this pissed me off so bad i changed my rule of only rating if i finish the book.
now it’s “i can rate if i read at least 50%.”

well, i read until 64% and i can slap that 1 star PROUDLY.

I’m sad to say: this wasn’t good.

Why finish and rate it then? Because I needed an audiobook, and it’s Iggy Toma narrating. And I thought something easy on the ears while preparing gallons of food for my Easter family get-together would be nice.

Well. It wasn’t. I mean - it did the trick, but through most of the book I kept thinking that it’s such a shame it wasn’t done in a better way.

It’s MMM, which IS tricky. But the premise of two best friends, one of them the oblivious jock, the other one the responsible, smart one who’s been in love with Anton (the jock) for years - it’s a good setup. Add their former (nerdy) chemistry teacher Chase to the mix, and it could have been SO good.

If not for Chase himself.

I mean - he’s cute. Nice. But I didn’t feel any chemistry between him and his former students (funny, seeing as he teaches chemistry 😅). In fact, Anton and Sebastian behave a lot more maturely than Chase himself, and he’s happy to go with the flow.

There’s supposed to be an age gap, right? And you think that a teacher used to managing college students would have a bossy side, right? And being the nerd he is, he would struggle to articulate his feelings?

Well, none of that happened. On top of that, he’s very ready to discuss the intimate details of their relationship with his group of friends (the ones this series is about).

Uh. No. What a tattletale.

So to make it short, Chase ruined it for me, even if I’d be willing to suspend my disbelief during some very unrealistic side plots (like the Texan business owner who holds dear “family values”, and who decides that having 2 business partners who are single is bad, but knowing they’re in a “stable” throuple is exactly the kind of “dependable” he’s looking for 🙄).

Annnywayyyy…

I finished it because of Iggy, and because I’ve been too busy to look for another audiobook.

2 stars, despite the decent narrator.

Audio: 5 stars, I do really enjoy Iggy Toma. He always kills it with a social awkward nerd haha

Book: 2.5 stars

Started off strong, but it just got boring after awhile. Idk it just felt like something missing in this MMM romance.

🎵Narrated by Iggy Toma🎵 💗 Iggy Toma has the most soothing voice and I always feel like I’m being wrapped up in a warm hug when I listen to him.

I loved this book so much! It was laugh out loud funny and I had such a good time listening to it! The only other book I loved in this series was Drama! so to have snippets of Everett being his overly dramatic self and his boyfriend needling him to no end throughout was lovely too. Love how yard sale price negotiations get them hot for each other 🤣 The other couples were also present for some scenes for those who liked them.

MMM is really, really hard to do right and I think despite some misgivings I had in the beginning, this author made this relationship feel incredibly even. At the start, I really wasn’t sure how it would ever feel that way because Anton and Sebastian were best friends and Seb had been in love with Anton for most of his life and very few poly books with that dynamic have worked for me but the author made me a believer and I ended up loving them together. Chase was their chemistry teacher at South Rock High and this takes place a few years after they graduated. Seb & Anton had always found Chase hot so when they ran into him at a street festival, the three of them hung out and got along so well that they ended up having a one night stand that knocked all their socks off. During this 3some, Seb finally gets to be with Anton but he doesn’t like having to share him and he becomes really jealous after the fact which I wasn’t vibing with but the author turned this around for me and made it so I fully believed that Anton and Sebastian would never make it without Chase. As Anton put it, Chase was the salt that elevated them but without him, it was bland, lackluster. I especially loved the communication they had and all the rules and guidelines they had in place by the end. It was one of the few MMM books that all the feelings felt even, real and they were so adorable with their pet names for each other. 💗

I also liked how the spice was turned up in this book compared to the rest of the series. That’s not to say it overtook the romance but these three were hot. 🥵 I loved how nerdy chemistry teacher Chase was a dirty talking beast in bed especially when paired with two jock wrestlers. There was no one bottom, they all switched and it was just so hot 🥵🥵🥵

I really enjoyed this book and had a great time listening to it. Oh and I especially loved Einstein. 🐈💗

The audiobook was very well done. Iggy Toma knocked it out of the park.

Chase is probably a bit on the spectrum. Super smart and straightforward. Once he realizes his previous students are hitting on him he goes for it which I can really respect.

Chase does a great job at bringing the two guys together. They function as a unit which I liked. He was the thing that made them work 💙

There were some very funny lines. 😂 Truman’s books can be hit or miss so between the excellent narration and the humor it helped the book be better liked.

This is the fourth and last book of the "South Rock High" series. It's an MMM story with a Chemistry teacher and two former students. I must say that poly stories are not among my favourites, but this one was very well developed and I enjoyed it very much.
Chase likes his life as it is, he's a chemistry teacher and has a great group of friends. He despises messes, and that is why he stays away from love and relationships. Sebastian and Anton have been friends their whole lives, Sebastian has been in love with Anton for a long time but the latter runs away from feelings and relationships, so Sebastian has never confessed how he feels. Then they come across Chase and the chemistry, the sexy type, explodes among them and none of them can't stop it.
I had previously only read one poly story and it didn't convince me, but this one? I loved how the author gave the three people in the relationship the same importance, how they all participated, talked and spent time together. They formed a beautiful unit that was what all three of them exactly needed. I didn't feel any of them were left out and their relationship felt very real.
Sebastian's jealousy and doubts were realistic as he wasn't sure if Anton would feel the attraction towards him or if it was only because Chase was with them. Then Anton being scared of love and fighting what he felt for the other two men showed he wasn't a player and that he was scared of not being enough for anyone else. Chase, being Chase, was the one that first accepted his love for Sebastian and Anton and jumped head first into it in his practical way of doing things.
It was a lovely story, well written and told in such a believable way because their relationship was complex and there were many emotions going on at the same time, but all of them felt equal, which in my opinion is sometimes hard to get on MMM stories.
The evolution of their connection was natural and I loved how they made it work. And yes, the steamy moments were very hot and they perfectly represented their love and their dynamic as a throuple. This is a great novel that I enjoyed immensely and I can't wait to read whatever the author brings next.

This book is a muffin.

As in the top is just so delicious and the best thing ever but then you keep eating and you end up with a boring bland stump. I am quoting the book here, it was a really good quote, but so apt in explaining this book.

I absolutely ATE the first few hours of this audiobook. So much heat, so much humour (forgive me I am Australian), so much longing. Gah, it was perfection.

Sadly, that did not continue. Because the thing that I am always most afraid of with MMM occured.

THERE WAS A FUCKING THIRD WHEEL. NOPE. NOPE. NOOOOOO!!!!

The book doesn't think there is a third wheel, the author doesn't think there is a third wheel, even the CHARACTERS dont think there is a third wheel. BUT HE IS THERE!!!!! Being sorta included and sadly sidelined and my heart HATED it because he was the best of the three.

Also, certain MC's happen to regularly manage TWO cocks in their mouths at once. I just couldn't with the amount of disbelief my lockjawed ass had to suspend with this.

This ended up being better than I expected! ✌🏻 I always go into an MMM story with a bit of apprehension because you never quite know how it's going to be handled, but this one was done pretty well. I can't say I was a huge fan of the jealousy and the lack of communication at times, but all in all, it was a fun listen. The way the relationship developed between the three men was different than I've read before so that was refreshing. This was a nice final installment in what I found to be an overall enjoyable series! 💙

I’m sorry for the pun but…where’s the chemistry?? I just couldn’t feel a connection big enough during their first time all together for them to act the way they did after this one time.

It was not a bad read but it wasn’t great either. A lot of things were missing for me or didn’t make sense.

- After their first threesome the 2 best friends who live together don’t talk about what just happened? We jump to their POV chapter 2 days later without knowing how things were just after Chase left their place. I hate when writers do that. How can you skip a scene like this? How did they act when they had to put their clothes back on? Did they just run to their room and ignore the subject the next day? It’s not realistic to jump over that and not describe it.

- There was a weird continuity error from the previous book where Chase meets them and knows what they do (since he tells his friends that he’ll call them to talk about the school’s vending machines) and here he’s like “so how’s college? What’s up?”

- Anton was kind of an ass, dismissing both guys’ declaration of love I wanted to smack him. His best friend tells him he loves him and he has a very disappointing reaction. And his answer to Chase’s confession is even worse. I wanted to tell them to leave him alone and be together

- The 2 best friends not doing anything more than kissing because “the salt/Chase was missing” felt ridiculous. And then their rule at the end about not having sex if it’s not the 3 of them (“all of us or not all”) was just weird IMO. Why couldn’t have some 1 on 1 sex scenes when the 3rd guy is tired/not in the mood/at work/away? It’s the first time I read a poly story with this take and I didn’t like it. Why would it feel like cheating if they’re in a loving relationship and trust each other?

- I love poly romance and comparing with those I’ve read this year, the sex scenes here were really average

- Calling Sebastian and Chase “my guys” all the time was a bit cringey in my opinion

- I admit I didn’t care enough about the characters to be interested in their job and let’s be honest selling vending machines is not the most exciting job to put in a book :/ This and Chase’s obsession with chemistry made for a flat book

- Chase seemed to be neurodivergent when it fitted the story. One minute he couldn’t read people (and based on the previous books where he was really bad at reading social cues) and the next he was fine…

- Chase tells Seb he loves him, he says it back then Chase is like “ok it can’t work i guess this is goodbye” just because he learns that the 3rd guy doesn’t do relationship. That didn’t make any sense!? Seb goes after him right away but it’s just a stupid way to react

- I didn’t get the point of the dad’s wedding scene?

- We never really learn how old Chase is but the guy on the cover looks too young in my opinion to fit him

I did like the pancake scene, it was funny!

Overall I did struggle with it and it took me longer than my usual books. I even ended up skim reading some boring scenes and even the last sex one. I’ve loved one book by this author but the rest has been average so I don’t think it’s for me.

3.5 - the narration was spot on. Chase is adorable, of course. I wish we had seen just a bit of the falling in love part, but the spice was great and overall, I enjoyed this book.

4.25 stars, this was super fun and surprised me. Was it realistic for an MMM? Probably not. Did I giggle and kick my feet? Yes, yes I did!

Out of all the MMM books I've read, this one was better than most. You get all three POV's, and all of them make sense!!

You have a reclusive chem teacher who's a secret freak and two business/HS/gym buddies, one of which is secretly in love with the other, and both of them are Golden retrievers that fall for the chemistry teacher.

Loved the tropes, the progression and the characters. Solid work, I'm definitely looking for more AJ Truman novels in the future!

3.5 stars -'Twas pretty good, but I think I sometimes struggle with poly books bc you don't get as much of each POV. Also, there was a lot (maybe too much?) business talk, since Anton and Sebastion had a business together. That being said, this had some good elements and I liked the dynamic overall, so I don't regret finishing it. Not my favorite of the series, but fun.

I really enjoy this series, especially the banter between the MCs and the teachers group chat, but this story was not my favourite.
Chase is adorable and I liked him from the beginning: he's smart, blunt, honest, he approaches everything from a scientific pov. He meets two former students by chance and has a really hot encounter with them.
Anton and Sebastian are two friends who started a buiness after high school, they also live together and are very close; Sebastian has been in love with Anton forever, but he's too oblivious to notice.
I honestly didn't like the miscommunication between Anton and Sebastian: they are so much in sync in their work that is difficult to believe they aren't able to talk about their emotions. Anton stomps over Sebastian's feelings too many times, especially with Chase in the mix.
There are too many things unsaid between them, communication is the key in poliamory relationship, they cannot just say that "salt is missng" to sart a serious triad wih Chase.
I also didn't appreciate how Anton reacted to the other men's love declarations. I honestly struggled to see the cennection between the three of them.

I was provided an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Advanced Chemistry is the 4th and last book in the South Rock High series by AJ Truman. It is an MMM standalone but will shine brighter if read after the first 3.

Chase is the chemistry teacher at SRH and is very smart and cerebral. Anton and Sebastian are jocks, best friends and business partners. They are also ex students of Chase and once had a crush on their dear Mr. M. One night they meet at a festival (cameo by my favourite grumpy barkeep Mitch!) and end the evenin at Anton and Sebastian's apartment. Chase will then show both men his wild side (who knew he could be such a bold lover!)

AJ Truman always delivers on the humour, and although no one can be funnier than Raleigh, the dialogue between Chase and his colleagues was super entertaining.

I had a little bit of trouble embracing the love connection. Perhaps, for me, it was lacking just a tiny bit in the "romance" and felt a little rushed. BUT I ADORED Sebastian. For me, he was the star and anchor for the other 2 men. Every Sebastian chapter ripped my heart. I could feel his love and his pain. I also loved Chase and his objective thoughts about the whole situation. I only wished the story would have focused more on the relationship between the 3 men and less on the business relationship between Anton and Sebastian.

Thank being said, I always love AJ's books because they sort of become the soundtrack for my own generation. AJ always includes many relatable references to movies, songs, TV shows that are part of my growing up and my current life, all his books become super comforting and I find myself returning to them often for the laughs and the swoon. The friendships he writes about always feel real and this book is no exception.

Advanced Chemistry was a very quick, funny read and low angst. I'm now super curious to see what the next series will be about because I will miss Amos, Everett, Julian and Chase dearly.

In a way this felt like an answer to a lot of my problems with M/M/M books. The development of the thruple felt organic and was not without jealousies and hurt feelings. The (over abundant) sex was hot and didn’t feel a choreography exercise. The relationship wasn’t just logistics and positive affirmations.

Still, the sex was over abundant and I ended up with a lot of questions about this vending machine business. I definitely feel like that could have been a little better thought through.

Honestly I really expected to love this one, but i had a feeling from Sebastian's first pov chapter that it may not work for me. MMM is always tricky to balance in a way and this one just didn't do it for me.

Sebastien has been in love with Anton for years Chase is looking to embrace his wild side and Anton is kind of a fuck around type in general.

So the chaos was already there in the disappointing feels on Chase and Anton's end, then the overwhelming heartache and jealousy with Sebastian. I just felt so bad for him and after that second sex scene of the three, him waking up to then find Anton and Chase sleeping separately from him.

I cannot handle the heartache here and I just don't see how work relationship wise, other then the lust between the three. The alternating povs are not endearing me to Chase or Anton, even with the reasonings behind their holding back. Both seem to be oblivious to Sebastian, which is weird since he seems to wear his heart on his sleeve.

This one simply didn't give me the romance vibes I like and I'm not invested to see where their story goes.

This book had me cackling. Chase is hilarious. Aside from the actual laughing out loud, this was also adorable, sweet, and steamy. I already knew I loved Chase. He's so straight forward, data driven, and tbh he doesn't really give af. And I'm obsessed. I loved getting to know Sebastian and Anton as well. I love how all three balance each other out. They each have things in common with and very different from each other and we really got to see each of them bond with each other person. I thought their conflicts felt real and genuine, as did their love. I do wish we could've seen a little more of them falling in love, as time seemed to skip that a bit, but honestly, I was having so much fun I didn't mind. I also loved seeing the old crew. 3/5 spice levels.

Notes: MMM, teacher/entrepreneurs, teacher/old students, age gap, abandonment issues

This is the last book in the South Rock High series and Chase the logical, analytical, lonely Chemistry teacher finally meets his match...it just happens to be with two of his former students who are athletic and own their own business. And his reaction to them is anything but typical for him.

Anton is more of a charming salesman and is very motivated to succeed, but he feels like he is not as smart as the other two and therefore not as worthy. Sebastian is the perfect mix of hot, built jock and naturally intelligent. And Seb has been in love with his best friend Anton for years.

But one wild night with Chase and their explosive chemistry changes everything and opens them up to something unexpected. Chase essentially bridges the gap that has been in place between Seb and Anton's feelings, but also perfectly balances this trio out.

This is a fairly low angst, opposites-attract, former students(21 yo) and nerdy teacher. I liked them together and how they all brought something to the triad and how they shared various things. I liked that, especially in the beginning there was confusion and some jealousy, and that made it more realistic. But sometimes it got a bit bogged down in their business instead of getting deeper into the feelings, so it felt like some things progressed quickly. But I liked getting more with Chase's teacher friends and I enjoyed this series.

Chase is the Chemistry teacher at South Rock High. We have read about his friends Amos, Everett and Julian each get their happy ever afters. It is now time for Chase to shine.

Anton and Sebastian are best friends, roommates and business partners since high school. Chase was their teacher. Sebastian has been secretly in love with Anton for years, but knowing the feelings are not reciprocated, he buries the feelings deep and locks them away.

At Springfest Anton and Seb bump into their old teacher Chase and have a drink and a chat, all three men are gay. They get caught in a rain storm, and head back to Anton and Seb’s apartment to dry off. While watching the tv and their clothes drying, Chase takes matters into his own hands and all three have a fabulous afternoon!

They hook up again and they all know this is not a one time thing. They start to build a foundation for love. All three men have insecurities and issues that they work through together. They communicate and express their feelings well.

This is the final book in A. J. Truman’s South Rock Series and i have so enjoyed it. It has been so much fun to read all four friends get their heas. The character formation has been so great to read. You must read this series.

“Mr. M., we love you”. Anton and I yelled.

This is the fourth and final book in the South Rock High series. This is an MMM story that features Chase, Anton and Sebastian. MMM stories are always a hard one for me because I need them to be done right to enjoy them. I need all three MCs to be together and love each other the same. AJ Truman did a fantastic job with this!!

Chase was my least favourite character of the four main friend group until this book. I loved being able to see inside his head and understand him a little more. I loved how Chase was really the missing piece and this relationship only really worked with him in it.

Anton and Sebastian were such fun characters. I loved seeing their friendship blossom into more with the help of Chase. I also really loved seeing Chase and Sebastian click and how it grew organically.

This is a very low-angst book but some troubles happen between the three of them of course. I can’t even imagine trying to make a throuple work!! Loved their HEA!! I absolutely recommend this book and series. It can be read as a standalone but I think you’d get more out of it if you’ve read the rest of the series as well. Can’t wait to read more from this author in the future!

Loved this one. The first line of the blurb encapsulates this book perfectly
Today’s experiment: Combine one socially awkward science teacher with two beefy, former students. Mix well.

Each character had an individual voice, and the relationship managed to feel balanced and well fleshed out in less than three hundred pages. All MCs have their own POV, they have incredibly sweet interactions, there's no third act breakup, communication and all in all I'm looking forward to reread this one.

NSFW infos:
- one smaller older teacher (30s)
- one tall gym bro with Middle Eastern Descent "intense eyes, and spiky black hair"
- one gym bro "tank of a man, short but compact and filled with big muscles. His olive complexion and dirty blond hair gave him a surfer boy look"
- skiing
- wrestling
- spitroasting
- sucking two cocks at once
- upside down 69 including rimming
